The Manatee
Los manatíes son mamíferos acuáticos. ¡No
son peces!
Amamantan a su cría, tienen pelos, sangre
caliente y respiran aire con sus pulmones.
Comen plantas acuáticas y marinas.
Viven en las costas, bahías, ciénagas y ríos.
Manatees are aquatic mammals. They are not fish!
They nurse their young, have hair, warm blood, and
breath air with their lungs.
They eat aquatic and marine plants.
They live in coastal areas, bays, marshes and rivers.
Los adultos pueden llegar a medir unos 11
pies y pesar cerca de 1,500 libras, ¡el peso
de cuatro vacas juntas!
Su reproducción es muy lenta. Las hembras
paren un solo bebé cada 3 o 4 años.
¡Los manatíes son tus amigos! Podan las
hierbas marinas y fertilizan el fondo del mar.
Limpian las ciénagas y ríos cubiertos de
plantas flotantes, ayudando al control de
estas plagas.
The adults could measure about 11 feet in length
and weigh up to 1500 pounds, the weight of four
cows together!
Their reproduction is very slow. Females give birth to
only one calf every 3 or 4 years.
Manatees are your friend! They trim the sea grass and
fertilize the bottom of the sea.
They clean the marshes and rivers covered with floating
plants, helping in the control of these plagues.
¿Qué le ha pasado a los manatíes?
A la llegada de Cristóbal Colón eran muy
abundantes.
Ahora quedan muy pocos. Están en
peligro de extinción.
Los matan para comer y vender su carne y
sus huesos.
What has happened to the manatees?
When Christopher Columbus arrived, they were
plentiful.
There are now very few of them left. They are in
danger of extinction.
They kill them to eat and sell their meat and bones.
Quedan atrapados en las redes de
pesca y mueren ahogados.
Los botes a velocidad y sus hélices los
hieren y matan.
También mueren por la contaminación de
los ríos y el mar.
Abandonan sus lugares favoritos ya que los
humanos destruyen las playas, manglares y
las desembocaduras de los ríos.
They get trapped in fishing nets and drown.
Speed boats and their propellers injure and kill them.
They also die because of the pollution of rivers
and seas.
They abandon their favorite places because
humans destroy the beaches, mangroves and
river mouths.
La ley prohíbe su captura y que los molesten.
¿Qué podemos hacer para protegerlos de
la extinción?
Debemos respetarlos y observarlos a
distancia, pero no debemos tocarlos,
darles agua o alimentarlos.
También podemos navegar despacio en áreas
donde sabemos que viven los manatíes.
The law prohibits their capture and harassing them.
What can we do to protect them from extinction?
We should respect them and observed them from
a distance, but we should not touch them, offer
them water or feed them.
We can also reduce boat speed in areas we know
manatees live.
