Luci quiere mudarse
by Rose Aguilera
Build Background
Read the title to the children and talk with them about what the three animal friends
are doing in the cover illustration. Help them identify them as an iguana, rabbit, and
rattlesnake. Ask children what it would be like to move to a new place. Ask questions such
as: ¿Qué harían para mudarse a un nuevo lugar? ¿Quién podría ayudarlos?
Introduce the Text
Guide children through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar
language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some
suggestions:
Page 2: Explain that in this story three animal friends, Luci the iguana, Rosa the
rabbit, and Rubén the rattlesnake live in the desert.
mucho sol y mucha arena.
Page 3: Remind children to use the illustrations to help them read.

Choices for Support
Concepts of Print
Practice early reading behaviors such as recognizing and using beginning consonant
sounds and the letters that represent them to read words.
Phonemic Awareness and Word Work
Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:
• Listening Game Materials: pairs of words. Have children listen for words that rhyme.
Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme, and keep their hands in their laps
if the words do not rhyme. Say pairs of words, for example, sentarse and cambiarse;
estaba and contaba; seca and calor; metía and quería.
• Matching Letters Materials: upper and lower case magnetic or cardboard letters or
letter cards. Have children choose letters and match them with their upper or lower
case form.

Writing About Reading
Critical Thinking
Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 14.5 and guide them in answering
the questions.
Responding
Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities.
Target Comprehension Skill
Conclusions
Tell children that as they read they can use details to figure
out more about the text. Model how to think about conclusions.
Think Aloud
Practice the Skill
Have children tell details that show the reasons Luci needs to pack new things for a
cold place.
Writing Prompt
Read aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the
writing prompt on page 6.
Think about moving to a cold place. Draw a picture of something you would pack that is
not in the story.
What would you pack? Why will you need it?
