CLASSROOM TIPS for Volunteering

Remember to fill out a Volunteer Application (located in office)
Each time you come to Beach to volunteer, please sign in at the computer in
the office
Pick up and wear your Volunteer Badge (one will be made for every parent
volunteer!) Thanks Mona!
Please turn cell phone ringer off
Remember to borrow a key from the teacher if you need to use the bathroom
(please don’t use student bathrooms)
If you need to bring a younger sibling, make sure your duties are at the
laminator or copy machine (and not in the classroom, playground, field trips or
cafeteria)
Please sign out at the computer in the office
Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions
What can you do if you feel you are not needed?
• If the class is gathered on the carpet, check to make sure everyone is
focused without talking. If not, just quietly sit near them in a chair or
on the floor.
• Sharpen pencils, cut shapes, etc…
• Find Mona in the volunteer office in Room 109. She always has a need.
How can I help a struggling writer?
• Be sure they are holding their pencil correctly.
• Help them stretch out the sounds in a word.
• Walk to the word wall (or other print in the room) with them.
• Find an example of print in the room to show spacing, letter formation,
etc.
How can I help an advanced writer?
• Hold their writing 12 or more inches away and ask if it is their best
work.
• Ask them for more details or color in their illustration.
• Ask them to think about voice in their writing. Are their emotions
evident in their writing?
• Create a title for their piece.
• If it is a final copy, create a cover with title, author and illustrator.
What do I do during Center Time?
• Whether literacy or Math, rotate from table to table helping any children
that have questions or need more support in completing an activity.
SHOW, don’t tell, them how to complete a task.
• If a child asks a question that they should or probably know the answer
to, ask them if they can figure out the answer or find a friend that
knows. This helps them to be more independent and seek answers
before first coming to an adult.
What do I do if three children come to me with a question at the same
time?
• Ask them to return to their seats and raise their hand to ask a
question. Staying seated helps with management and safety in the
classroom.
What do I do if a student asks if they can go to the bathroom, sharpen a
pencil or get a drink of water?
• Please check with the teacher on the classroom’s policies regarding the
above and follow those rules.
What if I notice a student is off task or “goofing” around?
• We would appreciate your support in helping to redirect the student.
Redirecting can be Verbal:
o The language we use is, “The expectation right now is…” You may
give them a gentle reminder of what they are supposed to be
doing.
• Or Non-Verbal:
o Pointing to the teacher if that is where they should be looking,
modeling keeping hands to self, gently putting their pencil away,
smiling and pointing to their seat if that is where they are
suppose to be, making the quiet sign.
o Proximity: Sometimes just moving near a student who is off task
can help them refocus.
• If the child continues to be off task and/or disruptive to the learning
process, please bring it to the teacher’s attention.

Cada vez que trabaje como voluntario, debe registrarse en la
computadora de la oficina.
Recoja su insignia de voluntario (se hará una para cada voluntario).

Recuerde apagar el móvil.
Si debe usar los servicios, no use los de los niños. Pídale las llaves a la
maestra para los servicios de adultos.
Si necesita traer a un hermano menor, puede ayudar con copias o
plastificación (y no en el aula, el patio de recreos, las excursiones o la
cafetería).
Recuerde firmar la salida en la computadora de la oficina.
Preguntas mas frecuentes
¿Qué puedo hacer si siento que no me necesitan?

Si la clase está en la alfombra, fíjese que todos prestan atención sin
hablar. Si no, siéntese cerca, en silencio, en una silla o en el piso.
Sáquele punta a los lápices, corte formas, etc.
Busque a Mona en la oficina de voluntarios, 109 que siempre tiene
algún trabajo.
¿Cómo puedo ayudar a un niño con dificultad para escribir?

Fíjese que tiene el lápiz en la mano bien.
Ayúdele a estirar los sonidos de la palabra.
Llévelo a la pared con palabras (u otro lugar con palabras).
Encuentre un ejemplo de escritura en el aula para mostrarle espacios,
forma de la letra, etc.
¿Cómo puedo ayudar a un escritor más avanzado?

Tenga su escritura a 12 pulgadas de distancia y pregúntele si es su
mejor trabajo.
Pídale más detalles o más color en el dibujo.
Pídale que piense en la voz en la escritura. ¿Son evidentes las
emociones en lo escrito?
Escriba un título para su trabajo.

Si es su copia final, háganle una tapa con título, autor e ilustrador.
¿Qué puedo hacer durante el tiempo en centros?
•

Sea durante el tiempo de lecto-escritura o matemáticas, pase de
mesa en mesa ayudando a los niños que tienen preguntas o
necesitan ayuda para terminar la actividad. Muéstreles cómo hacerlo,
no les diga.
Si un niño le hace una pregunta que ya debería saber, pregúntele si
pueden pensar más o hablar con un compañero que sepa. Así
aprenden a ser más independientes y a buscar las respuestas antes de
preguntarle a un adulto.
¿Qué hago si tres niños me hacen preguntas al mismo tiempo?
•
Pídales que vuelvan a sus sillas y que levanten la mano para hacer
una pregunta. Es importante que los niños permanezcan sentados
para controlar la disciplina mejor en el aula.
¿Qué hago si un estudiante pide ir al baño, sacarle punta a un
lápiz o beber agua?
•
Hable con el maestro sobre sus reglas con estas actividades.
¿Qué hago si veo a un estudiante que se ha distraído?
Le agradeceríamos si pudiera corregir al estudiante con una de las
siguientes estrategias:
Verbalmente:
• Decimos: "Se espera que ahora estés…" y le puede recordar
suavemente lo que debe estar haciendo.
O no-verbal:
• Se puede señalar al maestro/a si es dónde deberían estar mirando,
mostrándole al estudiante dónde poner las manos, cómo dejar el
lápiz, con una sonrisa señalarle su silla si es donde debe estar y
haciendo con el dedo la señal de silencio.
• Cercanía: A veces simplemente al acercarse a un estudiante
distraído le ayudamos a re-enfocarse.
Si el niño continúa distraído sin ocuparse de su tarea, por favor, avísele al
maestro/a.
