The mobile phone has become an essential communications tool for certain segments, allowing you to identify and reach a target public in a direct, effective and efficient manner. I have chosen this book because its topic is relevant and I would like to know the opportunities that the development of mobile phone communications would involve. The extreme rivalry that exists in most business sectors, the diversity of media sources, the atomising of supports normally used in publicity campaigns and the high investments in publicity have led to a high degree of scepticism on the part of the individual and a defensive attitude towards publicity spots. Given the importance that the use of mobile phones as a communication and distribution channel for consumers could reach, a new line of investigation is becoming important. Its purpose is to determine the key factors arising from the research and the identification of new possibilities that are opening up not only for communication but also for the distribution and sale of goods and services. In addition, various studies affirm that mobile publicity is well positioned in the operator’s value-add chain. In the last few years, the operators have invested heavily in their mobile Internet sites and in the establishment of close relationships with their customers. The mobile phone sector has spoken about publicity of a personal nature, of mobile telephone placement and of the capacity to offer advertisements depending on user location. Among the development problems, it should be highlighted the lack of research to demonstrate the efficiency and the lack of common standards in the way operators, mobile manufacturers and publicity agencies focus the service. All these data make us think that we are up against a business problem of enormous potential for research with practical implications of great interest in the academic, social and organizational spheres. With all these questions in mind I opened the book that, according to the back cover, is designed to teach professionals and researchers how to make the most of the mobile marketing potential by identifying its methods and techniques. The book is divided into 14 chapters and 4 annexes. [240] september · december 2009 · esic market book review – mobile marketing: achieving competitive advantage through wireless technology 09 845 It is a book based on professional experiences, illustrated with presentday cases and data to give practical ideas when defining and applying a mobile marketing strategy. Another virtue of this book is that it makes sense of a set of techniques that can be conceptually confusing, by means of international examples that are carefully chosen and demonstrate solutions that are being currently used by companies. The book begins talking about the wireless revolution, explaining the Japanese model and a mobile phone’s functions. In chapter 2 we are introduced and presented with all the agents that have provoked changes to the market: operators, users, platforms, access providers, contents providers, companies and media, marketing and consultancy agencies. Marketing for the wireless world begins with the advantages that this medium has over traditional means along with the opportunities that it represents. I want to highlight the reflections made on good practices with regard to SMS’s and databases. Within marketing practice we are shown how to improve brand knowledge (chapter 4), advertising models based on locality and the opportunities that could arise from the new wireless communication market (chapters 5 & 6). Commerce through mobile or m-commerce is defined in the following chapter. As regards results measurements, the same measures as in traditional marketing are proposed (chapter 9). Without a doubt, the advantage is that they are well-known and universally accepted; the disadvantage is that they possibly don’t get to measure the effects and peculiarities of mobile marketing. The final chapter offers case studies set out schematically, which makes reading easier but does not allow an in-depth study of them. With the reading of this book we are introduced to a whole new range of tools and practices in Marketing with the mobile phone acting as the central hub. It raises questions that academic research must solve. I believe it is a book that we could recommend to our university students as it offers, in an attractive manner, something very close to their daily lives and could give them business ideas for their near future. september · december 2009 · esic market [241] 09 847 Crítica de Libros Mobile Marketing: Achieving Competitive Advantage through Wireless Technology Alex Michael, Managing Director at Sprite Interactive Ben Salter, Mobile Content Manager at Sprite Interactive ISBN: 978-0-7506-6747-0 Editor: Elsevier Butterworth-Heinemann Copyright: 2006 234 págs.
