What is a Karios retreat you might ask? It is a 4 day retreat
within the walls of a prison for up to 36 inmates. There are
usually about 40 men from different faiths that are part of the
team. They give talks and are there to listen to the
inmates stories. History has shown that when an inmate has
attended a Kairos retreat the percentage of re-entry is very
low because these weekends change their lives. That is truly
the spirit working!
Se preguntará ¿qué es un retiro Kairos? Es un retiro de 4
días dentro de las paredes de una prisión para hasta 36 confinados. El equipo usualmente está compuesto de aproximadamente 40 hombres de diferentes religiones. Ofrecen charlas y están allí para oír los relatos de los presos. La historia
ha demostrado que un preso después de haber asistido a un
retiro Kairos el porcentaje de su re-entrada es muy bajo ya
que estos fines de semanas cambian sus vidas. ¡Eso es realmente el espíritu trabajando!

The Ascension of the Lord
As the liturgical year—and this Jubilee Year of Mercy—
unfold, we reflect on what Jesus’ ascension meant for the first
disciples and means now for us. Stay in Jerusalem, Jesus had
instructed, awaiting “the promise of the Father. In a few days
you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the
ends of the earth” (Acts 1:4–5, 8). Despite Jesus’ absence, they
wait “with great joy . . . continually in the temple praising
God” (Luke 24:52–53). But as we join them, waiting and worshiping, the enduring challenge—theirs and ours—is delivered
by “two men in white” (Acts 1:10). In every age, disciples
must stop looking at the sky, head down the mountain, and go
back into the world, “commissioned,” says Pope Francis, “to
announce the mercy of God, the beating heart of the Gospel,”
inviting everyone to find “in our parishes, communities, associations and movements . . . wherever there are Christians . . . an
oasis of mercy” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12).

La Ascensión del Señor
Al ir transcurriendo este Año Litúrgico —y este Año Jubilar
de la Misericordia—, reflexionamos en lo que significó para los
primeros discípulos y lo que ahora significa para nosotros. Quédense en Jerusalén, lo ordenó Jesús, a que “esperaran la promesa del Padre . . . , ustedes serán bautizados con el Espíritu
Santo dentro de pocos días . . . , cuando el Espíritu Santo venga
sobre ustedes; serán mis testigos en Jerusalén, en toda Judea y
Samaria, y hasta los confines de la tierra” (Hechos 1:4–5,8).

Continually Praising God
In both the first reading and the Gospel we are told about
Christ’s glorious ascension into heaven. Paul’s letter to
the Ephesians reminds us that Christ has been seated at
God’s right hand in heaven, above every choir of angels.
There might be a temptation to stay at an awed distance
from Jesus Christ. However, the tone of today’s reading is
far from that temptation. The tone is exultant and the
message is urgent. We are to be his witnesses, and the
Gospel describes the first witnesses this way: “With great
joy . . . they were continually in the temple praising
God” (Luke 24:53)
How can we continually praise God? The answer can be
found in the second reading, in which Paul prays that God
will give us a “Spirit of wisdom and revelation” in order to
know Christ clearly (Ephesians 1:17). We cannot stand at
a distance. We are to be enlightened and empowered.

CONTINUAMENTE ALABANDO A DIOS
Tanto la primera lectura como el Evangelio nos
cuentan la gloriosa Ascensión de Cristo al cielo. La carta de san Pablo a los efesios nos recuerda que Cristo
está sentado a la derecha de Dios en el cielo, por encima
de todos los coros de ángeles. Puede que tengamos la
tentación de mantenernos a reverencial distancia de Jesucristo. Sin embargo, el tono de las lecturas de hoy dista mucho de esa tentación. El tono es exuberante y el
mensaje es urgente. Hemos de ser sus testigos, y el Evangelio describe a los primeros testigos de esta manera:
“Muy alegres. . . permanecían constantemente en el templo alabando a Dios” (Lucas 24:53).
¿Cómo podemos alabar a Dios continuamente? La
respuesta se encuentra en la segunda lectura, en la cual
Pablo pide a Dios que nos conceda un “espíritu de sabiduría y de reflexión” para conocer a Cristo claramente
(Efesios 1:17). No podemos mantenernos a distancia.
Vamos a ser iluminados y fortalecidos.
