On Thursday of Catholic Schools Week, we celebrated the theme of “Serving Hands”. For this reason,
the OLL’s Student Council sponsored a candy sale on behalf of the Catholic schools in the New Jersey/New
York area who are still recovering from Hurricane Sandy. This is our school’s second contribution to this cause
through the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and Catholic Charities. In the first half of the
current school year, our students extended their “serving hands” to the community on several occasions.
Besides participating in our traditional food and toy drives during Thanksgiving and Christmas, respectively,
our students contributed to the Pro-Life Office in Hialeah, sang for the elderly at the St. Catherine Nursing
Home, and visited “His House”, a faith-based organization dedicated “to restoring the joy in the lives of
children from newborn to 18 years of age, and those who have transitioned out of the foster care system.” In
addition, every first Friday, our students have the opportunity to “dress down” and contribute one dollar to
“Amor en Accion”, a missionary Catholic lay community of the Archdiocese of Miami, on behalf of our sister
school in northern Haiti. At OLL, service is a condition for membership in the National Junior Honor Society
and Student Council. Under the direction of the Department of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of
Miami, OLL has been implementing a Service Learning Program from PK through 8th grade.
