Dear Soon to Be Second Graders,
We are so excited to meet you in August! Second grade is such a wonderful year and we
look forward to learning so much about each other, our faith, and our world together. In second
grade, many things are different. We will be upstairs on the second floor of our school, you will sit
in desks instead of tables, and you will make two Sacraments, Reconciliation and Holy
Communion. Some things will be familiar to you, like reading, Writers Workshop, and what it
means to be a Saint and Scholar at OLC.
Over the summer, you can do so much to get ready. It is so important to KEEP READING
after school ends in June. The library is our favorite summer spot. It’s cool (and air-conditioned),
the librarians are excited to see readers getting ready for second grade, and there are plenty of
books to dive into! ​
Students entering second grade should be able to read out loud to an
adult or independently for fifteen minutes​
every day​
.​
Please practice this independent reading
so great first grade habits are maintained.
Two more great habits to keep up over the summer are practicing your math facts and
writing. ​
Students entering second grade should practice addition and subtraction of
numbers 1 to 20. ​
Students are also encouraged to keep a journal to write and draw about their
summer days away from school. ​
Keep a writing journal so you practice what it’s like to write
for 10 minutes a day.​
Write real stories, fiction stories, directions, recipes, or even crazy
dreams! Your second grade teachers would LOVE to see them if you’d like to bring them in when
school starts in the fall.
When you shop for school supplies, please remember you do NOT need to put your name
on anything except your folders and notebooks. We will share all other items in our classroom
community. All second graders are encouraged to bring in an extra pair of gym clothes (or other
top and bottom) in a ziploc bag to keep in case of an accident.

A los próximos estudiantes del Segundo grado,
Estamos muy emocionados de conocerte en Agosto. El segundo grado es muy increíble y
anticipamos aprender mas de ti , nuestra fe, y nuestro mundo. En segundo grado, muchas cosas
son diferentes. Estamos en el segundo piso de la escuela, vas a sentarte en un escritorios en vez
de mesas, y vas a recibir dos sacramentos: Reconciliación y Primera Comunión. Algunas cosas
van a estar familiares para ti como lectura, talleres de escribir, y lo que significa ser un santo y
estudiante en OLC.
Durante el verano, puedes hacer mucho para estar listo. Es importante de SEGUIR
LEYENDO después que la escuela termina en Junio. La biblioteca es nuestro lugar favorito n el
verano porque no hay ruido y tienes muchos libros para leer. ​
Estudiantes entrando al
segundo grado deben practicar adición y sustracción de los números 1 a 20. ​
También, los
estudiantes pueden tener un diario para escribir y dibujar sobre los días del verano aparte de la
escuela. Esto es buena practica para poder escribir por 10 minutos al dia. Escribe cuentos, ficción,
direcciones, recetas o sobre sus sueños. Tus maestros de segundo QUIEREN verlo si te gustaría
compartirlos cuando el año escolar inicia.
Cuando hagan compras para el nuevo ano escolar, por favor recuerden que NO necesitan
poner su nombre en nada menos los cuadernos y carpetas. Compartimos las otras cosas en la
comunidad de la clase.
