Dear reader,
Welcome to the new edition of Infosylva. Over 450 delegates from 120
countries and approximately 160 Representatives of United Nations
Agencies and Programmes as well as observes from intergovernmental
organizations and international non-governmental organizations attended
the 21st Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry (COFO) and the 3rd
World Forest Week (WFW), which concluded on Friday last week. This
year's COFO meeting focused on translating into action the results of
Rio+20, and saw the presentation the first-ever Wangari Maathai Award,
which was given to a forestry activist from Nepal in recognition of his
efforts to promote community forest management.
You will also find an article about an ethanol-based cooking fuel project in
Mozambique that is creating jobs, supporting local farmers, reducing
charcoal use and deforestation.

Bienvenidos a la nueva edición de Infosylva. Más de 450 delegados de 120
países, y alrededor de 160 representantes de organismos y programas de
las Naciones Unidas, así como observadores de organizaciones
intergubernamentales y organizaciones no gubernamentales
internacionales asistieron a la 21ª reunión del Comité Forestal (COFO) y la
3 ª Semana Forestal Mundial (WFW), que concluyeron el viernes pasado.
La reunión de este año se centró en traducir los resultados de Río +20 en
medidas de acción concretas. Además, tuvo lugar la presentación del
nuevo Premio Wangari Maathai, que ha sido entregado a un activista
forestal de Nepal en reconocimiento a sus esfuerzos para promover la
gestión forestal comunitaria.
También en esta edición de Infosylva, usted encontrará un artículo sobre
un proyecto de combustible a base de etanol para cocinar en Mozambique
que está creando oportunidades de empleo, apoyando a los agricultores
locales, reduciendo el uso de carbón vegetal y la deforestación.

Bienvenu(e) à une nouvelle édition de Infosylva. Plus de 450 délégués
venant de 120 pays et approximativement 160 représentants de plusieurs
institutions et programmes des Nations Unies, ainsi que des observateurs
de nombre d’organisations intergouvernementales et organisations
internationales non gouvernementales ont participé à la 21ème Session
du Comité des Forêts de la FAO (COFO) et à la 3ème Semaine des Forêts,
qui se sont achevées la semaine dernière. L’objectif principal de cette
session du COFO a été la conversion en actions concrètes des résultats de
RIO+20. En plus, le prix Wangari Maathai à été décerné pour la première
fois, et c’est un activiste népalais qui l’a reçu, pour ses efforts dans la
promotion d’une gestion communautaire des forêts.
Vous trouverez encore un article sur un projet pour un combustible à base
d’éthanol pour la cuisson, projet qui a contribué a créer du travail tout en
soutenant en même temps les agriculteurs locaux et en diminuant
l’utilisation du charbon de bois et donc la déforestation.

2012 State of the World's Forests
This tenth edition of State of the World’s Forests explores the role of forests in human history, finding
strong links between forest use and economic and social development and between unabated forest
destruction and economic decline. It suggests that forest production has an important role to play in a
sustainable future in which consumption and production are connected in a closed cycle. It points out
the importance of striking a balance between forest conservation and use, and proposes four strategies
for ensuring that forests make their vital contribution to a greener, more sustainable world.

The forest sector in the Russian Federation needs to be modernized using innovations and breakthrough
technologies to maximize its potential as a global mitigator of climate change and an important source of
timber, according to a new study presented today by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the

La décima edición de El estado de los bosques del mundo explora el papel de los bosques en la historia

Situation des forêts du monde
Cette dixième édition de Situation des forêts du monde aborde la question du rôle des forêts dans
l’histoire de l’humanité et met en évidence les liens étroits qui existent entre l’exploitation de la forêt et
le développement économique et social, et entre une destruction continuelle des forêts et le déclin
économique. La production forestière a un rôle important à jouer dans l’instauration d’un avenir durable
dans lequel consommation et production seraient étroitement liées au sein d’un même cycle. Il importe
aussi de trouver un équilibre entre la conservation et l’exploitation des forêts. Quatre stratégies sont
proposées pour que la forêt puisse apporter une contribution – vitale – à un monde plus durable et plus
respectueux de l’environnement.

Organised crime moving into logging: UN, Interpol

traded globally, the UN and Interpol warned on Thursday. The report, authored by the UN Environment

Amazon deforestation jumps in August

Satellite imagery released by the Brazil's National Space Research Institute (INPE) reveals a sharp jump
in deforestation during the month of August. The new data, released with little fanfare and without the
usual press release on INPE's homepage, was first highlighted by O Eco, a Brazilian environmental news
site. Some 522 sq km of Amazon rainforest was cleared in the month of August, an increase of 220
percent over August a year ago, according to INPE's near-real time deforestation detection system
DETER. Clearing was concentrated in Pará (44 percent) and Mato Grosso (40 percent), two states where
the bulk of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has occurred over the past thirty years.
Airborne analysis of burning Amazon forests could close climate model gaps

A group of scientists from Brazil and the United Kingdom are taking an unusual tropical field trip: 21
days flying in and out of heavy smoke plumes from wildfires in the Amazon and measuring everything

Desertification last year, Korea is hoping to make Korea Forest Service a future global hub for green
growth. For KFS Minister Lee Don-koo, a key milestone in the drive for green growth was the
establishment of the Asian Forestry Cooperation Organization early this month. The organization is the
result of an agreement on forestry cooperation made during the summit between ASEAN and Korea in
Bali last November. AFoCo is the first international organization to deal with cooperation in forestry and
the product of Minister Lee's philosophy, officials said.

Scientists are at loggerheads over whether there is an ecological advantage to thinning forests and using
prescribed fire to reduce fuel for subsequent fires - or whether those methods actually diminish

Arctic warming could spur regrowth of ancient fossil forest

A fossilized forest that flourished more than 2.5 million years ago could return to life thanks to a
warming planet, scientists say. The paleo-scene won't sprout up overnight, of course, said Alexandre
Guertin-Pasquier of the University of Montreal, who will present his research at the Canadian
Paleontology Conference in Toronto this week. Rather, he said, climate forecasts suggest that, by 2100,
the now-uninhabited Bylot Island where the fossilized forest was discovered will support temperatures

Infosylva a été d'abord lancée en 2005. Elle est envoyée deux fois par mois à environ 27 000 parties prenantes dans le secteur
forestier dans le monde entier. Elle existe en anglais, espagnol et français. Chacune inclut, à la section ‘Revue de presse’, un
résumé succinct de l'article.
Bien que la FAO gère la liste, les désignations employées et la présentation de matériel dans le site web Infosylva n'implique en
