Background The mission of STO is to conduct and promote co-operative research and information exchange. STO consists of a three level organization: the Science and Technology Board (STB), the Panels and the Technical Teams. The NATO Modelling and Simulation Group (MSG) is one of the seven Panels/Group under the STB. The mission of the NATO Modelling and Simulation (M&S) Group (NMSG) is to promote co-operation among Alliance bodies, NATO member nations and partner nations to maximise the effective utilisation of M&S. . Theme The use of Modelling and Simulation (M&S) is increasing throughout NATO and the allied nations. As the need to integrate M&S into the NATO and the nations environment increases, the demand for new techniques increases. Current trends in digital game-based learning show an increase in the development and use of serious games. Serious games present learning objectives in a game-like environment and tightly connect learning and training to computer game playing. Computer games interactively involve the player in the game world and keep the player's motivation to continue playing at a high level throughout the game. This is very desirable for education and makes serious games attractive for learning. The potential of computer games to motivate players to continue playing as well as to reach younger learners makes them especially attractive for education and training. The motivation that is generated by computer games is ascribed to an appropriate balance between stimulation and resolution that challenges players without overtaxing them. The purpose of this lecture series is to introduce the audience to computer games, how games are designed and the benefits that an organisation can achieve by using serious games. De cette nécessité croissante d'intégrer la M&S dans l'OTAN et au sein des nations, découle une augmentation de la demande en nouvelles techniques. Les tendances actuelles en matière d'apprentissage numérique par les jeux vidéo montrent une augmentation du développement et de l'utilisation des « jeux sérieux ». Les « jeux sérieux » présentent des capacités d'apprentissage dans un environnement de jeu et lient étroitement apprentissage et formation au jeu sur ordinateur. Les jeux sur ordinateur font participer le joueur de manière interactive au monde du jeu. Ils maintiennent la motivation du joueur à un haut niveau tout au long du jeu pour qu'il continue à jouer. Cette technique est très souhaitable en matière d'éducation et rend les « jeux sérieux » attractifs pour l'apprentissage. La capacité des jeux sur ordinateur à inciter les joueurs à continuer de jouer, ainsi qu'à toucher les jeunes apprenants, les rend particulièrement attrayants pour l'éducation et la formation. La motivation générée par les jeux sur ordinateur est associée à un juste équilibre entre la stimulation et la recherche de la solution qui pose un défi aux joueurs sans les surmener.
