During this month and all year round CNG encourages you to think about how your energy consumption helps to shape our energy future. Energy Awareness Month presents a great opportunity to learn about energy and how to use it more efficiently by weatherizing your home, purchasing energy efficient appliances and investing in renewable energy solutions. Tips for Halloween Safety The American Gas Association recommends a number of ways you improve your home energy usage and help better manager your energy costs. • U se caulk or weather-stripping to seal leaks around doors, windows and other openings, such as pipes and ducts. • D uring the winter, set thermostats between 65 and 70 degrees and to 58 degrees when away from the house for more than a few hours. • Install a programmable thermostat to adjust the temperature automatically, to reduce energy use during the hours when you’re not usually home without sacrificing comfort. • C hange or clean furnace filters once a month during the heating season. You can use your monthly natural gas bill as a reminder. On Oct. 31, many families and their children will dress up in costumes, go trick-or-treating or attend parties to celebrate Halloween. Here are a few tips from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ensure a fun and safe night. Make sure they walk in groups or with a trusted adult. • F asten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see trick-or-treaters. • H old a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see, and to allow others to see you. Always walk, and don’t run from house to house. • E xamine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before they’re eaten. Scalding water in the home can cause third-degree burns in as little as one second. Infants, the elderly and physically challenged individuals are especially at risk. Your water heater should be set no higher than 120° Fahrenheit. If your water heater is set higher, turn it down by following the manufacturer’s directions.
