Born in Mexico and raised among giant
grandmothers, mossy house walls, and
rampaging feral gardens, Yuyi Morales
fostered a strong bond with the magical
stories that ran in her family. Since having
immigrated to the USA in 1994, she has drawn
from her family’s legacy and her heritage to
create some of the most celebrated Latino
works for children’s books.

Yuyi is the 2004 winner of the Pura Belpre
Medal for Illustration for her book Just a
Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book as
well as the 2008 winner for Los Gatos Black
on Halloween (written by Marissa Montes), and
the 2009 winner for Just in Case: A Trickster
Tale and Spanish Alphabet Book, given to
a Latino illustrator whose work best portrays,
affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural
experience in an outstanding work of literature
for children and youth.

Nacida en México, Yuyi Morales se crio entre
abuelas gigantes, casas de paredes musgosas,
y arrasadores jardines salvajes. Ahí adquirió
un fuerte vínculo con los cuentos mágicos que
recorrían en su familia. Una vez que inmigró a
Los Estados Unidos en el año 1994, Yuyi retomo
ese legado familiar y la herencia de su cultura
para crear algunos los libros infantiles más
celebrados entre los latinos.
Yuyi es la ganadora de la medalla de Pura
Belpre del año 2004 por las ilustraciones de
su libro Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and
Counting Book al igual, la ganadora del año
2008 por Los Gatos Balck on Halloween (escrito
por Marissa Montes) y la ganadora del 2009
por Just in Case: A Trickster Tale and Spanish
Alphabet Book. La medalla Pura Belpre es
otorgada anualmente a un ilustrador latino
cuya obra mejor retrata, afirma y celebra la
experiencia hispana en una obra sobresaliente
de la literatura para jóvenes y niños.
