Kurzbeschreibung
Eric Bishop (Steve Evets) ist am Rande des Nervenzusammenbruchs im Job als
Briefträger, als Vater oder mit Frauen. Seine erste Frau Lilly (Stephanie Bishop)
hat er verlassen, seine zweite Frau hat ihn verlassen. Seine Stiefsöhne Ryan (Gerard
Kearns) und Jess (Stephan Gumbs) sind zwei Halbkriminelle.
Als Eric überlegt, wann der letzte glückliche Moment seines Lebens war, muss er
an ein Spiel seines großen Helden Eric Cantona denken. Voller Selbstmitleid, mit
einem Joint zwischen den Lippen, denkt er daran zurück. Und dann sitzt da plötzlich
Eric Cantona in Erics Zimmer!
Rezension
Ken Loach hat wieder einmal eine Working-Class-Komödie geschaffen, wo Steve
Evets einen stereotypen Vertreter der englischen Arbeiterklasse spielt.
Aber mit -Looking for Eric- hat Ken Loach nicht nur einen hervorragenden
Film über soziale Beziehungen innerhalb einer Familie gedreht, sondern auch einem
der besten Premier-League Spieler aller Zeiten und außergewöhnlichem Sportler und
Menschen, Eric Cantona, ein filmisches Denkmal gesetzt.
In "Looking for Eric" geht es erstaunlich wenig um Fußball. Der Sport dient
vor allem als Metapher für die Wichtigkeit von Freundschaft und Solidarität und dass
man auch nach einer Niederlage immer wieder aufstehen und sein Bestes geben muss.
Dieses Fußballmärchen mit einem der Großen der Größten trifft die Herzen der
Zuschauer. Und das nicht, weil Heldentaten vollbracht werden, sondern weil ein Held
auf dem Spielfeld sich als Mensch und Freund gegenüber einem Verlierer präsentiert.

writer Paul Laverty and directed by
English director Ken Loach. The film's
cast includes former professional
footballer Eric Cantona and former
bassist with The Fall, Steve Evets.
The lead actors are therefore Steve Evets
and Eric Cantona, with Stephanie
Bishop, Gerard Kearns and John Henshaw; it was shot entirely in Manchester.
Director Ken Loach said of the film: "We wanted to deflate the idea of celebrities as
more than human. And we wanted to make a film that was enjoying the idea of what
you and I would call solidarity, but what others would call support for your friends
really, and the old idea that we are stronger as a team than we are as individuals."
Synopsis:
Eric Bishop, a middle-aged postman working for the Manchester sorting office, is
going through a dreadful crisis. His wife has gone, his stepsons are out of control and
the house is completely chaotic. Poor Eric Bishop is in a right state. He is twice
divorced, and stuck with looking after the stepchildren from his second failed
marriage. He has, indeed, just become a grandfather and it is only when he agrees to
mind the baby every afternoon before handing it over to his first wife Lily, played by
Stephanie Bishop, that he realises he is still in love with her.
Life is crazy enough, but how can he face up to Lily, the woman of his dreams that he
once loved and walked out on many years ago? Despite the comical efforts and
misplaced goodwill of his friends, Eric continues to sink. In desperate times it takes a
special friend to help a lost postman find his way, so Eric turns to his hero: footballing
genius, philosopher and poster boy, Eric Cantona. Indeed, at his weakest moments,
when he considers suicide, his hallucinations bring forth visits from the French
footballer, ready to advise our postman.
Reception:
The critics usually say that it’s not a comedy exactly, but it is one of Ken Loach's
lightest and happiest films. Written by Loach's long-time collaborator Paul Laverty,
this is a wacky and self-conscious buddy movie about a depressed middle-aged
postman and Manchester United fan called Eric Bishop who suffers a breakdown
brought on by family troubles.
“Looking for Eric” is a film that touches on one of the great tragedies of life: that it
can never attain the perfection, and importance, of sport. If only our chaotic and
unsatisfactory lives could achieve its clarity; if only our sporting heroes could help us
as much as Eric Cantona helped Eric Bishop in that movie!

Resumen :
La vida de Eric Bishop, cartero en Manchester, es bastante complicada porque tiene
que cuidar de sus dos hijastros, que están a su cargo desde que la madre de los
adolescentes y segunda mujer de Eric lo dejó hace años, y, además, su hija le pide que
durante unas horas se ocupe de su bebé para que ella pueda terminar sus estudios. Eric
está encantado de ocuparse de su nieta, pero lo que le preocupa es que deberá llevarla
cada día a la casa de su primera mujer, que siempre ha sido el amor de su vida y a la
que prácticamente no ha visto desde que nació su hija: el día del bautizo las abandonó
y, aunque siempre ha sido un padre afectuoso para su hija, le debe una explicación a su
ex mujer, a la que sigue amando profundamente. A pesar de la amistad y el buen
humor de sus compañeros carteros, que hacen todo lo posible para devolverle la
sonrisa, Eric no sabe cómo afrontar la situación… Una noche, Eric se dirige a su ídolo,
que parece observarlo con mirada maliciosa desde el póster de la pared de su
habitación y se pregunta qué haría en su lugar el mejor jugador del Manchester
United. Y Eric está seguro de que Eric Cantona, el “Rey”, le va a ayudar a actuar con
decisión.
