The Assumption of the Blessed virgin mary
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Today, August 15, we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the
course of her earthly life, was assumed (taken up) body and soul into heavenly
glory. She was exalted by the Lord as Queen of Heaven and Earth, and in this
Assumption, Mary was the first to experience the bodily Resurrection that is
promised to all who believe in Christ.
A little more history: We have no real knowledge of the day, year, and
manner of Our Lady's death. The dates which have been assigned to her death
vary between three and fifteen years after Jesus’ Ascension. By tradition, Mary
lived at Ephesus after the death of Jesus, and her tomb was presumably found
in Jerusalem. It is believed that Mary died in the presence of the Apostles, but
that after her burial, her tomb, when opened, was found empty.

WHAT’S INSIDE:
For hundreds of years, Catholics observed the feast of the Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary -- but it was not until 1950 that the Church proclaimed
this teaching a dogma of the Church -- one of the essential beliefs of the
Catholic faith.
Words from a familiar hymn, Immaculate Mary, remind us of Mary’s
presence in heaven:
Immaculate Mary, thy praises we sing,
Who reignest in splendor with Jesus, Our King.

would to parishioners and visitors alike, offering Christ the King as home.
Welcoming and ensuring the people seeking God feel comfortable in

Stewardship of Treasure
How shall I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” Psalm 116
“After Jesus, it is the Blessed Virgin Mary who, by her example, most perfectly
teaches the meaning of discipleship and stewardship….She was called and gifted by
God; she responded generously, creatively and prudently; she understood her
divinely assigned role as ‘handmaid’ in terms of service and fidelity.” (U.S. Bishops’
letter, Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response)

Catholic schools

services such as Baptisms,
Weddings and Funerals.

CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING
RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY
Pope Benedict on Conscience
“The Catechism of the Catholic
Church tells us, ‘Conscience is a
judgment of reason whereby the
human person recognizes the
moral quality of a concrete act that
he is going to perform, is in the
process of performing or has
already completed. In all he says
and does, man is obliged to follow
faithfully what he knows to be just
and right’ (n. 1778). From this
definition it emerges that the moral
conscience, to be able to judge
human conduct rightly, above all
must be based on the solid
foundation of truth, that is, it must
be enlightened to know the true
value of actions and the solid
criteria for evaluation. Therefore, it
must be able to distinguish good
from evil, even where the social
environment, pluralistic culture
and superimposed interests do not
help it do so” (Address to the
Pontifical Academy for Life,
February 24, 2007).
