December 16, 2012 third Sunday of advent Dear Parishioners, On December 1, parishioners from the Cathedral of Christ the King, St. Peter Chanel, and St. Thomas Aquinas came together for a united cause at the St. Jude Marathon in Memphis, TN. This was my fifth year running in support of Team Andrew for 16-year-old brain cancer survivor Andrew Vassil, and it was another amazing experience. 2699 Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305 404-233-2145 www.cathedralofchristtheking.org This year, Team Andrew raised $86,702 – almost $40,000 more than our goal of $50,000! I personally raised over $22,000, which is astounding considering my original goal was set at $5,000. Team Andrew placed third in overall fundraising for the event, which I am very proud of. It is humbling to think that because all of these people gathered together to walk for a few hours, $5.7 million was raised for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. My sincere thanks to all of those who support Team Andrew. Looking to the future, if we are able to add 10 more people to our team next year, and each person raises $750, that would be an additional $7,500 for St. Jude. Please consider joining us in 2013. Third Week of Advent † We ask that you pause a moment to offer a prayer for the sick of our community, especially: Peter D’Alema, Alison Carson, Fran Davis, Ellen Donnelly, Tiffany Dyson, Hannelore Edwards, Tommy Filer, Lea Flaim, Charlotte Hafley, Barbara Johansen, Rebecca Montfort, Marie Pearce, Dorothy Shusta, Donald Vellek, Melody Wickliffe, Mark Wlazlo, Gail Yadlosky. The Advent wreath, one of our most important Advent traditions, is a circle, made of evergreen branches which has no beginning or end. The circular shape of the Advent Wreath is used to symbolize God the Father and eternal life. The wreath holds four candles which are lit over the four weeks of Advent. On the Third Sunday of Advent the lighting of the third candle of Advent - a rose-colored one - for “Gaudete Sunday” symbolizes Joy, reminding us of the Joy the world experienced at the coming birth of Jesus. Feed a Family Do you have a newborn? Contact the Feed a Family ministry at [email protected] to have a meal delivered and/or provide the baby’s birth announcement for the next bulletin. The Cathedral Choir of Christ the King will celebrate the return of its annual presentation, A Candlelight Service of Readings and Carols, on Sunday evening, December 16 at 7:30 pm. This wonderful Cathedral tradition combines the prophetic expectation of Advent with the joyful fulfillment of Christ’s birth. The superb visual and acoustic environment of the Cathedral will be enhanced by sparkling illuminations of the church’s stained glass windows, candlelight and renditions of many beloved Christmas carols. This year’s presentation will feature special choral music by Sergei Rachmaninov, Robert Chilcott and Benjamin Britten among others. The service will also offer a “sneak-preview” of all the favorite Christmas carols of the season .…from Silent Night to O Come All Ye Faithful. Pilgrimage to Lourdes & Paris JUST SCAN IT! CKS Honors Our Veterans Students at Christ the King School celebrated Veterans’ Day in November with music, American flags, and much more. Students were asked to create a replica of one of the seals from each branch of the armed forces, with winners selected at each grade level. All wore red, white and blue and gathered around the flagpole at the end of the day to sing patriotic songs, listen to descriptions of military uniforms displayed on life-size paper dolls, and retire the colors. Before the start of school that morning, members of the National Junior Honor Society were up early to collect donations for small commemorative poppies, representing fallen servicemen. Made by our returning soldiers recuperating in VA hospitals, the symbolic poppy came from the title of the poignant poem “In Flanders Field” by Canadian LT Col John McCrae. CKS collected $515 for the Dunwoody VFW Post 10822. Specifically, the students’ donation will benefit veteran Marine CPL Todd Love, a triple amputee survivor of the Gulf War. Robert Barron Begins January 13, 2013 10:15 - 11:45 am Hyland Center Assembly Room In these six stories of conversion from the Gospels, Father Barron shares how six ordinary people, just like you, were met by Jesus where they were and called to a better life through Him. Registration fee is $20.00, workbook included; after Jan 6, $25.00. No refunds. Limited partial scholarships available. Coffee served at 10:00 am. For more info call 404-2673671 or email [email protected]. For details and to register online: www.cathedralofchristtheking.org/Conversion FOCUS ON THE CATECHISM: Faith In One God DOES IT MATTER? What does belief in the One God matter to your life? Once you understand the implications of faith in One God you can answer this question. Here is what the Catechism says about it: 222 Believing in God, the only One, and loving him with all our being has enormous consequences for our whole life. 223 It means coming to know God's greatness and majesty: "Behold, God is great, and we know him not." Therefore, we must "serve God first". 224 It means living in thanksgiving: if God is the only One, everything we are and have comes from him: "What have you that you did not receive?" "What shall I render to the LORD for all his bounty to me?" 225 It means knowing the unity and true dignity of all men: everyone is made in the image and likeness of God. 226 It means making good use of created things: faith in God, the only One, leads us to use everything that is not God only insofar as it brings us closer to him, and to detach ourselves from it insofar as it turns us away from him: My Lord and my God, take from me everything that distances me from you. My Lord and my God, give me everything that brings me closer to you. My Lord and my God, detach me from myself to give my all to you. 227 It means trusting God in every circumstance, even in adversity. A prayer of St. Teresa of Jesus wonderfully expresses this trust: Let nothing trouble you / Let nothing frighten you / Everything passes / God never changes Patience obtains all / Whoever has God / Wants for nothing God alone is enough. 6 THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT Pastoral Care Ministry Dottie O’Connor • 404-233-2145 x440 • [email protected] Are You in Crisis? CTK’s Stained Glass Windows To commemorate our 75th anniversary, the Cathedral of Christ the King has published The Jewels of the Cathedral, a full-color brochure depicting the 21 intricately detailed windows in the Cathedral. Created by Chesley Turner, an art history major and CTK parishioner, the brochure provides exceptional descriptions of our stained glass windows. As Turner writes, “the artisans of Willet Glass Studios in Philadelphia created a custom visual record combining church doctrine, history, tradition, and legend in the truly stunning medium of painted leaded glass.” While the book is fascinating to read on its own, we welcome you to use it on a self-guided walking tour of the Cathedral. Your time & talent Our parishioners are often asking us to verify that they are an “active practicing Catholic.” The question of parishioner status is important because this question comes up in many circumstances such as: Bernadette Flowers • 404-267@cathedralctk 3690 • Fruitcake and Fudge Sales The Knights of Columbus will be selling fruitcake, fudge and coffee to support the Monastery in Conyers after the Saturday Vigils on December 15 and after all Sunday Masses on Sunday, December 16 except the 1:30 pm Mass. Tables will be located in front of the Cathedral (weather permitting) and in the hallway in front of Kenny Hall. Checks or cash are preferred since we are limited in the number of credit card readers available. Festival of Trees St. Vincent de Paul Society is participating in Embassy Suites Atlanta Galleria Festival of Trees now through January 5. The event, in its third year, will display 30 local nonprofit organizations decorated themed Christmas Trees in the lobby of the hotel. This year, the Cathedral of Christ the King Conference has decorated the tree. SVdP volunteers spent many hours to make edible Christmas tree decorations. All gingerbread cookies are made from scratch and hand decorated. Join us and vote St. Vincent de Paul's Christmas Tree as your favorite this year! Certification as godparents/sponsors for Baptisms and Confirmation Active parishioner tuition rates in Catholic grade schools and high schools Preparation of couples for marriage Preparation of parents for their children’s Baptisms Scheduling of the facilities for liturgical services such as Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. Enrolling children in the Religious Education Programs and Sacramental Programs for First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation. The Archdiocese of Atlanta defines “active Parishioners” as those registered and worshipping members (i.e., who attend Mass weekly) who contribute of their time, talent and financial resources to support the Parish. In practice, Parishioner verification is done by looking equally at three criteria: Registration, Regular Mass Attendance, and Financial and Time Support. Registration One must be officially registered as a parishioner of the Cathedral, as recorded in our parish database, for at least 6 months. Registration forms are available at the front desk or online. Regular Mass Attendance Catholics are obliged to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Participation in the communal celebration of the Sunday Eucharist is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and to his Church. The faithful give witness by this to their communion in faith and charity. Regular receipt in the Sunday collection basket (at least once per month) of a contribution envelope (or, if participating in E-giving, our electronic giving option, and submitting a parishioner donation slip in the collection basket) provides an objective measure of regularity of attendance at Christ the King. Financial Support and Time Support Level of financial support will vary from family to family depending on the family’s income. When you participate in your parish, you are helping to build the Kingdom of God here on earth. You help build the Kingdom by joining a parish organization, volunteering in one of almost 100 ministries operated by the parish, enrolling in an educational program and giving financially to meet the needs of the parish. If you have any questions regarding the parishioner verification process, please contact Molly Kerr at [email protected]. 8 Fr. Frank McNamee encourages you to be an active member of our parish. Your parish – and your own faith life – is enriched and strengthened by the participation of our members!
