Rule
Talking with your child while doing an activity adds to the learning. Math can be challenging
for families, so make it a game and help everyone relax. Your child can learn a pre-algebra
concept while talking, playing and guessing.
What your child will do
Guess the other players rule.
What you need
•12-15 familiar objects
What you do
1. Examine the items carefully.
2. One person chooses 3 items from the group according to a common attribute (one thing
about them that is the same). Do not tell the other players why you have chosen your 3
items!
3. The other players take turns choosing another item that fits into your group and must tell
why it fits.
4. Keep going around until everyone has had three chances to “guess the rule”.
5. The first player announces when someone has figured it out by saying, “You guessed my
rule!”
6. If no one gets it, the first player tells everyone the rule and the next person gets to create
a rule.
7. Play again!
Questions to ask
What colors do you see on your items? What is the same about them? What is different? Are
there any items in the group that are unique for some reason? Are there any items that have
two or three things alike?
For parents
Keep the communication and conversation going while working on math activities. Later, your
child will be able to transfer this sorting and classifying skill to higher level math problems. If
you have fun with your child with math early in life the same positive experience will happen
when you work together on Algebra and Geometry.

5. El primer jugador anuncia cuando alguien la haya adivinado diciendo, “¡Tú adivinaste mi regla!”.
6. Si nadie la adivina, el primer jugador les dice a todos la regla y el próximo jugador tiene la
oportunidad de crear una regla.
7. ¡Empiecen de nuevo!
Preguntas
¿Qué colores ves en tus objetos? ¿Qué es lo mismo entre ellos? ¿Qué es lo diferente? ¿Hay algunos
objetos en el grupo que son únicos por alguna razón? ¿Hay algunos objetos que tienen dos o tres cosas
que son iguales?
Para los padres
Mantengan la comunicación y la conversación mientras que trabajan en actividades matemáticas. Si
ustedes se divierten con su niño con actividades matemáticas en su edad temprana la misma
experiencia positiva sucederá cuándo trabajen juntos en álgebra y geometría. Su niño transferirá estas
destrezas de agrupar y clasificar a problemas matemáticos de más alto nivel.
