Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA)
WHEN: This Spring
WHO: Students in grades 3-8, 10 and 11
WHY: To measure how well students are meeting
college and career readiness goals
SUBJECTS: English language arts and math only
REPLACES: Measurements of Student Progress (MSP)
(Grades 5 and 8 still take the science MSP)
SMARTER BALANCED is an engaging, online test.
Forget your No. 2 pencil. There are no bubbles to fill in. Students take the tests on a computer.
INTERACTIVE
Students may be asked to drag
and drop answers, complete a
chart, or highlight evidence.
SUPPORTIVE
RESPONSIVE
The test offers built-in calculators
and dictionaries and can
accommodate special needs.
Questions respond to the
student’s ability, getting more or
less challenging based on answers.
SMARTER BALANCED tests measure real learning.
The SBA measures progress toward college and career readiness. The test shows how well
students understand concepts, not how well they memorize material.
RIGOR
The Common Core State Standards expect more of
students, so the tests are more rigorous.
EVIDENCE
Guessing doesn’t cut it. Students are asked to cite
evidence for their responses, such as highlighting
phrases that support an answer.
UNDERSTANDING
WRITING
Memorizing formulas isn’t enough. Students must
apply math concepts to real-life problems using
multiple steps.
Students are asked to express their knowledge, ideas,
and even their mathematical thinking in writing at all
grade levels.
SMARTER BALANCED is not new for Highline students.
Our students field tested Smarter Balanced last year. We didn’t receive test scores, but our students have a
year of practice behind them.

MATERIAS: Solamente arte de lenguaje inglés y matemáticas
REEMPLAZA: Medida del progreso del estudiante (MSP)
(Grados 5° y 8° seguirán tomando el MSP de ciencias)
SMARTER BALANCED es una examen interactivo en línea.
Olvida tu lápiz . No hay burbujas que rellenar. Los estudiantes tomarán el examen en la computadora .

RESPONDEN BIEN
La evaluación ofrece calculadoras y diccionarios incorporados y pueden acomodar necesidades especiales.
Dependiendo de las habilidades del
estudiante las preguntas son o más
difícil o más fáciles de acuerdo con las
respuestas.

Los estudiantes pueden arrastrar y colocar las respuestas, completar un grafico,
o marcar con un rotulador la prueba
Las evaluaciones SMARTER BALANCED miden el aprendizaje real.
El SBA mide el progreso para estar preparado para el colegio y profesiones. Mide que tan bien los estudiantes entienden
la materia en vez de lo bien que la han memorizado.
RIGOR
Los estándares estatales exigen mas de los estudiantes, por lo tanto los examines son mas rigurosos.
ENTENDIMIENTO
Memorizando formulas no es suficiente. Los estudiantes deberán aplicar conceptos matemáticos a
problemas reales utilizando varios pasos.
EVIDENCIA
Adivinar no cuenta. Se les pide a los estudiantes que
demuestren sus respuestas tal como rotulando frases
apoyando su respuesta.
ESCRITURA
Se les pide a los estudiantes que expresen su conocimiento, pensamiento matemático por escrito a todos
los grados.
El SMARTER BALANCED no es algo nuevo para los estudiantes de Highline.
Nuestros estudiantes tomaron el examen de Smarter Balanced el año pasado. Aunque no recibimos los resultados del los exámenes, nuestros estudiantes tuvieron un año para practicar.
