Harun Farocki sums up the sense of the installation The Silver and The Cross with the
following sentence “The Spaniards brought the cross and they took away the
silver”. This work is a video-essay in which the artist uses a painting by Gaspar Miguel
des Berrio (1706-1762), from which he develops a discourse on the European
colonization process and the power obtained by controlling their production methods.
This piece is an exhaustive analysis by which the towns, workers and the silver mines of
Potosí, Perú, are being represented during the period of the Spanish colonization. The
different parts of the painting are being compared to the images that were filmed on the
same location in 2010.

En la video instalación La Cruz y la Plata, Harun Farocki condensa el sentido de la
pieza con la frase “Los españoles trajeron la cruz y se llevaron la plata”. El artista realiza
un video-ensayo utilizando una pintura de Gaspar Miguel des Berrio (1706-1762), a
partir de la cual desarrolla un discurso sobre el proceso de colonización europea y el
poder ejercido a través del control de los medios de producción. Un análisis exhaustivo
donde se ven representados los poblados, los trabajadores y las minas de plata de
Potosí, Perú, durante la colonización española. Las diferentes partes de la pintura se
van comparando con imágenes del mismo lugar filmadas en 2010.
