24th Sunday of Ordinary Time
Welcome my brothers and sisters in Christ to today's celebration of the Holy Mass on this beautiful Twenty-fourth Sunday in
Ordinary Time. Today's readings from the Holy Scriptures teach us that Jesus came into the world to save sinners. His
message from the Heavenly Father was one of pure love and mercy.
Today's reading from the Gospel of Luke (Lk. 15:1-32) also speaks of the mercy of God. In this case, three parables are given
to declare to magnitude of the mercy of God. These are the parables of the "Lost Sheep," (Lk. 15:3-7) of the "Lost Coin,"
(Lk. 15:8-10) and of the "Prodigal Son." (Lk. 15:11-32)
What brought about these parables is that the type of people who were coming to listen to Jesus, the tax collectors and
sinners, drew criticism on the part of the Pharisees and the scribes. (Lk. 15:1) they were grumbling because Jesus welcomed
sinners and ate with them. Poor Jesus, it did not matter what He did, there was always someone complaining about Him.
The Gospel Reading finished with the words, "this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been
found." (Lk. 15:32) Truly, I tell you, this younger brother was eternally lost until he came to his senses. Before that
happened, he had to lose everything he had. That is good! Because had he remained rich to the day that he would have died,
he would have gone straight to hell. By the grace of God, He was saved because of his poverty and his suffering. Through
poverty and suffering, he experienced a change of heart and obtained the mercy of God.
Like all of the aforementioned, God's people in the days of Moses, St. Paul, the shepherd who lost one of his one hundred
sheep, the lady who lost her coin and the father who lost his son, we all have a complete dependence on the mercy of God.
Some of us may need more grace and mercy from God than others because we truly are greater sinners. But no matter how
great a sinner one is, there is always time to turn back because Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
As we continue with the celebration of the Holy Mass, let us pray for those who have fallen away from the grace of God so
that Divine mercy may reach out to them before it is too late. May their ears be opened so they will hear that Jesus is
welcoming them back home.

Bienvenidos mis hermanos y hermanas en Cristo a la celebración de hoy de la Santa Misa en este hermoso Vigésimo Cuarto
Domingo del tiempo ordinario. Las lecturas de hoy a partir de las Sagradas Escrituras nos enseñan que Jesús vino al mundo
para salvar a los pecadores. Su mensaje del Padre Celestial fue uno de puro amor y misericordia.
La lectura de hoy del Evangelio de Lucas (Lc. 15: 1-32) también habla de la misericordia de Dios. En este caso, se dan tres
parábolas para declarar la magnitud de la misericordia de Dios. Estas son las parábolas de la "oveja perdida" (Lc. 15: 3-7) de
la "moneda perdida" (Lc. 15: 8-10) y del "Hijo Pródigo". (Lc. 15: 11-32)
Lo que produjo estas parábolas es que el tipo de personas que venían a escuchar a Jesús, los publicanos y pecadores, eran
objeto de críticas por parte de los fariseos y los escribas. (. Lc 15: 1) que se quejaban porque Jesús dio la bienvenida a los
pecadores y comía con ellos. Pobre Jesús, no importaba lo que hiciera, siempre había alguien quejándose de él.
El Evangelio terminó con las palabras, "este hermano tuyo estaba muerto y ha vuelto a la vida, estaba perdido y ha sido
hallado." (Lc. 15:32) En verdad, os digo, que este hermano más joven se había perdido para siempre, hasta que llegó a sus
sentidos. Antes de que sucediera, tenía que perder todo lo que tenía. ¡Eso es bueno! Porque si hubiera permanecido rico para
el día en que se hubiera muerto, habría ido directamente al infierno. Por la gracia de Dios, Él se salvó debido a su pobreza y
su sufrimiento. Por medio de la pobreza y el sufrimiento, el experimentó un cambio de corazón y obtuvo la misericordia de
Dios.
Al igual que todos los anteriormente mencionados, el pueblo de Dios en los días de Moisés, St. Pablo, el pastor que perdió
una de sus cien ovejas, la señora que perdió su moneda y el padre que perdió a su hijo, todos tenemos una completa
dependencia en la misericordia de Dios. Algunos de nosotros podemos necesitar la gracia y la misericordia de Dios más que
otros porque realmente somos más pecadores. Pero no importa cuán grande es un pecador, siempre hay tiempo para volver
atrás, porque Jesús vino al mundo para salvar a los pecadores.
A medida que continuamos con la celebración de la Santa Misa, oremos por aquellos que se han alejado de la gracia de Dios
para que la misericordia divina pueda llegar a ellos antes de que sea demasiado tarde. Que se abran los oídos para oigan que
Jesús les está dando la bienvenida de vuelta a casa.

2016 Bishop’s Annual Appeal
Be Rich in Good Works
Many parishioners have received, or will soon receive, a letter from
Bishop Serratelli requesting support for the 2016 Bishop’s Annual
Appeal. This year, the theme of the Appeal is Be Rich in Good
Works.
The Bishop’s Annual Appeal supports four very worthy causes: our
Catholic Charities agencies; Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’
retirement residence; our inner-city elementary schools and
seminarian education. Last year’s Appeal raised a record amount
which meant that even more could be done for the people in our
Diocese. You can help make this year’s Appeal an even greater
success by making a generous pledge today. Whatever you can do to
help will be a great blessing!

Exaltation of the Holy Cross
Exaltación de la Santa Cruz
According to Church documents, the Feast of the "Triumph
of the Cross" has been celebrated since the early days of the
Catholic Church. In regards to the Holy Cross itself, when
the Body of Jesus was removed from it, to prevent His
followers from finding it, the Cross was thrown in a ditch
or well, and then covered with stones and earth.
In 312 A.D., while Constantine the Great, who had not yet
converted to Christianity, was in combat with Maxentius
for the throne of the Roman Empire, he prayed to the Lord
God of the Christians to help him in his battle. In answer to
his prayer, a sign appeared in the sky. A luminous cross
was seen with the words "IN THIS SIGN YOU WILL
CONQUER" inscribed on it.
Following this, Constantine won the battle over Maxentius.
Indebted to God for his victory at the Milvian Bridge on
October 28, 312, Constantine commanded that the Sign of
Christianity be placed on the Roman standards and on the
shields of all the soldiers.
Then, on September 14, 326, St. Helena found in Jerusalem
the True Cross on which Jesus was crucified. To
commemorate the finding of the Holy Cross, Constantine
dedicated two Churches upon Calvary, "Anastasis" and
"Colgotha," both within the precincts of the Church of the
Holy Sepulchre. Beginning in those days, the Feast of the
"Exaltation of the Holy Cross" was commemorated
annually on May 3rd.
In 614, Chosroes II, the King of Persia, invaded Syria and
Palestine, at which time he carried away many of the great
treasures of Jerusalem, including the relic of the True
Cross. In 629, Emperor Heraclius of Constantinople
marched into Persia and recapture the True Cross, seeing to
it that Heraclius piously bring it back to Jerusalem while
being clothed in sackcloth of penance and barefoot. On
September 14th, the Sacred Cross was restored to its place
in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.
To commemorate this victory, in the 7th century, the
Church of Rome adopted the "Feast of the Exaltation of the
Holy Cross" on September 14th.
One may wonder, why do we give so much honor to the
Holy Cross. Over and above being the symbol of
Christianity, the Holy Cross brings to light many
fundamental truths that are being taught by the Holy
Catholic Church.
The Holy Cross is the symbol of salvation. Through Jesus
Christ and the Sacrament of Baptism, those who believe in
Him and obey His teachings, they will enjoy eternal life in
the Kingdom of God.
De acuerdo con documentos de la Iglesia, la fiesta de la
"Exaltación de la Cruz" se ha celebrado desde los primeros
días de la Iglesia Católica. En lo que respecta a la propia
Santa Cruz, cuando el cuerpo de Jesús fue retirado de ella,
para evitar que sus seguidores la encontraran, la Cruz fue

Constantino dedicó dos Iglesias en el Calvario, "Anastasis"
y "Golgotha", ambas dentro del recinto de la Iglesia del
Santo Sepulcro. A partir de esos días, la fiesta de la
"Exaltación de la Santa Cruz" se conmemora anualmente el
3 de mayo.
En el 614, Cosroes II, el rey de Persia, invadió Siria y
Palestina, momento en el que se llevó muchos de los
grandes tesoros de Jerusalén, incluyendo la reliquia de la
Verdadera Cruz. En el 629, el emperador de Constantinopla
Heraclio entró en Persia y recapturó la Verdadera Cruz,
procurando piadosamente traerla de vuelta a Jerusalén
vestido de sacos como penitencia y descalzo. El 14 de
septiembre, la Cruz Sagrada fue restaurada a su lugar en la
Iglesia del Santo Sepulcro en Jerusalén.
Para conmemorar esta victoria, en el siglo 7, la Iglesia de
Roma adoptó la "Fiesta de la Exaltación de la Santa Cruz"
al 14 de Septiembre.
Uno puede preguntarse, ¿por qué damos tanto honor a la
Santa Cruz.? Más allá de ser el símbolo de la cristiandad, la
Santa Cruz saca a la luz muchas verdades fundamentales
que están siendo enseñadas por la Iglesia Católica.
La Santa Cruz es el símbolo de la salvación. A través de
Jesucristo y el sacramento del bautismo, los que creen en Él
y obedecen sus enseñanzas, podrán disfrutar de la vida
eterna en el Reino de Dios.

A Parish Blessing
Una Bendición De La Parroquia
Our parish has received many blessings over the
years. One challenge that had existed was that our
church was never handicap accessible for our
elderly and disabled brothers and sisters,
sometimes not allowing them to share in the
celebration of mass with us. Over the years,
parishioners have requested and worked to raise
funds to have a ramp built.
Through the generosity of anonymous donors and
our fellow parishioners, it is with great joy to
share in the blessing we have received. The ramp
has been completed and ready to be put to
use! The last pew, closest to the ramp entrance,
has been removed so that our brothers and sisters
who are wheelchair bound will have easy access
and available space so they will be able to
participate in the celebration of mass.
We will celebrate the blessing of the ramp on
Wednesday, September 14th, the Feast of the
Exaltation of the Holy Cross, with a bilingual
mass of thanksgiving at 7:00 pm.
Nuestra parroquia ha recibido muchas
bendiciones en los últimos años. Un obstáculo
que existía era que nuestra iglesia no era
accesible para nuestros hermanos y hermanas
mayores y discapacitados, a veces no
permitiéndoles así compartir en la celebración de
la Misa con nosotros. Con los años, los feligreses
han solicitado y han trabajado para recaudar
fondos para construir una rampa.
A través de la generosidad de los donantes
anónimos y nuestros feligreses, con gran alegría
quiero compartir de las bendiciones que hemos
recibido. ¡La rampa se ha terminado y está lista
para ser puesta en uso! Se eliminará la último
banca para que nuestros hermanos y hermanas
que están en silla de ruedas tengan fácil acceso y
espacio disponible en la parte posterior de la
iglesia para participar en la celebración de la
misa.
Vamos a celebrar la bendición de la rampa el
miércoles, 14 de septiembre, la fiesta de la
Exaltación de la Santa Cruz, con una misa
bilingüe de Acción de Gracias a las 7:00 pm.
