From the Pastor Dear Brothers and Sisters, I am writing this letter before I leave for Ohio. Today is November 1st and I am going to be with my mom starting tomorrow November 2nd. By the time you read this letter I will probably know whether my mom is alive or dead. Her condition is very grave and so I don’t think that she will be around too much longer. Father Juan Pablo is a God-send for agreeing to stay at the parish while I am in Ohio. Who knows I might still be in Ohio whenever you receive this bulletin letter. However, if her condition improves I might come back to Oklahoma and then go back to Ohio if needed. So much is up in the air right now and I don’t feel good about being gone from the parish so much. I am missing the funeral of Pete Brann, a long time parish member and wonderful person. I am certainly praying for him. His funeral is scheduled for November 4th but that will be a couple of weeks before today’s date of November 16th. It will not be “news” by then. But I am writing this on Saturday, November 1st before I leave for Ohio. I have to anticipate these bulletin letters because they have to be in to Gayle about a week before they are published. The Bulletin company that we use is located in St. Louis and through electronic mail the bulletin is processed and sent back to us the Wednesday before the Sunday that you receive it. At any rate, when I see you I will let you know how things went in Ohio with my mother. This looks like it will be a little quieter here in the parish than what the last few weeks have been. We have an Hispanic leaders’ meeting scheduled for Saturday, November 22nd at 5:00 p.m. and then at 6:00 p.m. that same day we will have TURKEY BINGO in the gym. TURKEY BINGO is a yearly fund-raising event for the school. It is a lot of fun. There is raffles, food, bingo, and great prizes. November 16, 2014 If you have never experienced it please come and share in the excitement. Hopefully it will be a successful event and bring in some much needed money for our school. Next Sunday is the Feast of Christ the King and the final Sunday of the Church’s liturgical year. The next Sunday will begin the season of Advent. Advent is usually a very busy time in the parish with the Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe running from December 3rd through the 12th and then the Posadas Novena running from December 16th through the 24th. Each evening during the Novena prayers are offered to God and preparation is made to celebrate the great feasts of Our Lady on the 12th of December and the great feast of Our Lord celebrated at Christmas. These novenas make Advent a time of preparation in which we accompany Our holy mother and our Lord in the time of His first coming to us in the simplicity of Bethlehem. In the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe the Virgin is pregnant as evidenced by the black cord that she wears high upon her waist. She is expecting her Son and anticipating His reign among us. And so as we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King next Sunday let us reflect upon that reign. It is a Kingdom of holiness and a Kingdom of Justice. It is a Kingdom of Love and we are citizens of that Kingdom made such through holy baptism. In a world here there is so much wealth, so many resources to feed everyone, it is unfathomable that there are so many hungry children. Pope Francis Catholic Charities Food Drive October 19th - November 9th Catholic Charities is collecting meals and food items for 1,000 families to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner at home. They have asked us at Sts. Peter & Paul to collect 300 cans of applesauce. Please bring your donations to the parish office, school office or leave them in the vestibule, not in the red box by the south door. “For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore, I command you, you shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and the to the poor in your land. (Deut. 15:11) Prayer Intentions of Pope Francis November Universal: That all who suffer loneliness may experience the closeness of God and the support of others. God’s blessings upon each of you during this new week. Evangelization: That young seminarians and religious may have wise and well-formed mentors. Few men have been so beloved during their lifetimes yet posthumously so fiercely maligned. Yet no Pope other than St. John Paul II reigned longer in the 20th century and no Pope in centuries had to deal with the challenges he did. In the West, the importance of the visit of the priest is stressed, while in the East, the sick person is brought to the church for a full Liturgy of the Word. Some, such as the Armenians, even call it the “Ritual of the Lamp,” since the oil is poured out of the lamp by which the Word is read. This may be why Eastern Christians sometimes anoint the sick with this oil, since the trip to the church might kill them. Our tradition in the West also unfolded in monasteries, where it was possible for infirm monks to be attended with a full and beautifully consoling liturgy. In 950 the monks of St. Alban’s Abbey in Mainz produced a ceremonial book that was instantly a pastoral hit everywhere. there were two lengthy rituals for the sick, one an extended vigil, and the other a liturgy of anointing that included Communion under both species. While this formula was a house formula for monks, it is easy to see how monks who had the care of parishes desired to serve their parishioners in a similar way. The first form included the chanting of penitential psalms, and the second form required confession beforehand. Both forms included a laying on of hands, which everyone understood as being as essential part of penance. Rev.
