SEBASTIÁN Making Chilean Films Global CHILE AT SAN For the fourth time, CinemaChile is back at San Sebastian with a substantial delegation and seven films participating in diverse competitions. We are delighted to be back, because we perceive this instance as one of the most important festivals for our industry, and we are convinced that our filmmaking has consolidated itself as one of the most interesting ones on an international level due to its diversity and professional quality. Several things have happened since the last time we gathered, and our films have travelled to France, Korea, Switzerland, Mexico, Germany, and many other places of the world, where they have found recognition and admiration. In one year, our filmmakers have received awards as distinguished as an Academy Award, for the short film Bear Story, by Gabriel Osorio. On this opportunity, the Chilean film industry arrives with Jesus, by Fernando Guzzoni, which is part of the official selection. There’s also Rara, by Pepa San Martín; Much Ado About Nothing, by Alejandro Fernández Almendras; and The Blind Christ, by Christopher Murray, which shall all participate in the Horizontes Latinos section. Likewise, the film The Winds Know That I’m Coming Back Home, by José Luis Torres Leiva, and the short film The Stranger, by Pablo Álvarez, shall participate in the Zabaltegui-Tabakalera section. Finally, Neruda, by Pablo Larraín, will be available for viewing in the Pearls section. Not to mention the delegation that will be attending the Co-production Forum and Films in Progress, both strategic opportunities for our industry’s growth. We are thrilled to be once more at San Sebastian, a festival where we feel right at home. Festival. OFFICIAL SELECTION Fernando Guzzoni Je sú s Jesus FICTION | 87’ Chile, France, Germany, Greece & Colombia Script Fernando Guzzoni Cinematographer Bárbara Álvarez Production Design Rodrigo Bazaes Cast Nicolás Durán, Alejandro Goic Jesus (18) is in search of his identity. He dances with a Korean dance group, doesn’t attend school, and doesn’t have a job. Since her mother died, he lives with his father, Hector (53) in a department where TV and silences make up for their inability to communicate with each other. One night, Jesus opens up to his father and confesses him an irreversible event in which he was involved. This fact forces them to join together for the first time. Hector tries to protect and help his son out, but keeping the secret starts to trouble him. One day, he decides to go to pick him up, but not precisely to take him back home. All he has on mind is the cute girl he was making out with in the back seat of a moving car. But the driver, he recalls, happens to be the son of one of Chile’s most powerful politicians. Alejandro’s meditation on Chilean justice began with his previous film, the Sundance-winning “To Kill a Man”. With a focus on how the poor’s access to justice is frustratingly unfair, the film reflects upon how the inoperative Chilean judicial system could force a man to take justice into his own hands, and the bitter internal moral conflict that follows. With “Much Ado About Nothing,” Alejandro opens this portrayal of injustice from a different perspective: that held within a wealthy environment. Far from believing him, neighbors treat him as the crazy person in town. One afternoon, he realizes that a friend has suffered an accident in a distant place. Michael decides to leave everything behind so he can embark on a journey barefoot, and heal his friend with a miracle. On the road, he starts drawing attention on himself from people who’ve been exploited by the mining industry, live a drug-abused lifestyle, and see him as a new Christ who is able to ease the harsh reality of the Chilean desert. “The Blind Christ’ reflects on how faith emerges as a form of survival in Pampa del Tamarugal, the most potent relgious pole in the country as well as the victim of a dramatic social reality due to the abuse of the mining companies.
