SINOPSIS
“La flor de la vida” cuenta la historia de una atleta, un
escolar, una pareja en crisis y otra de recién casados que
tienen algo en común: todos rondan los 80 años. Y todos
se atrevieron —a una edad que suele ser percibida más
como el final que como el comienzo— a empezar de
nuevo. Con intimidad, crudeza y humor, la película retrata
una etapa de la vida en la que la esperanza y los sueños se
enfrentan cara a cara con la soledad, la enfermedad y la
muerte.
“La flor de la vida” tells the stories of an athlete, a
school dropout, a couple in crisis and another one just
getting married. All have something in common: they are
over 80 years old, and they are beginning all over at a
time in life when everything seems to have been done.
With honesty and humor, the film portrays a stage in life
where hope meets loneliness and even death, and
shows that before the end, there’s always
time for new beginnings.

que su segunda esposa empezara a sospecharlo sólo después de una
década juntos: a sus 80 años, Juan José es analfabeto. Y ahora enfrenta un
nuevo desafío: ir cada tarde a la escuela y aprender
el abecedario por primera vez.
All his life, Juan José mastered the art of deception. That is why it took
decades for his family to find out why he never helped his children with
their homework, why he always forgot his glasses when he most needed
them. Turns out, Juan José is illiterate. An 80-year-old illiterate. And now,
he is struggling with a new challenge: learning the alphabet.

Gabriella
El día que la conocimos, Gabriella nos habló de amor. O, mejor dicho, de
desamor. Que no dura para siempre. Que mientras hubo niños en la
casa fue más fácil sostener una pareja que ya no se sostenía... Por eso,
a los 82 años, su esposo de toda la vida, Aldo, la escuchó decir dos
palabras que nunca esperó sentir: “Quiero separarme”. Ahora, ambos
enfrentan el desafío de rearmar sus vidas sin el otro.
Aldo never thought that, after 60 years of marriage, he would hear his
wife, Gabriella, utter those words: “I want a divorce.” As Gabriella begins
at 82 to live according to her needs and expectations, Aldo has to learn,
for the first time, how to cope with life on his own.

Sara
El día que Sara enterró a su esposo, hace más de 20 años, enterró con
él esa vida, su primera vida, la que invirtió en levantar una familia, vestir
uno por uno a sus cinco hijos y llevarlos a la escuela. Pero ahora Sara
tiene un nuevo objetivo: a los 85 quiere ser campeona nacional
de atletismo.
At 85, Sara can look back at a life of sacrifice for her family, her five
children and many grandchildren. But there comes a time in life for other
sacrifices. After becoming a widow, Sara chose to dedicate her time to a
new endeavor: running. And winning the national athletics championship
in her specialty, one hundred meters, becomes her new obsession.

Ruben
“El primero fue un matrimonio para tener hijos y formar una familia. Este es el
matrimonio para disfrutar”. Así resume Ruben la historia de amor que a los 94 años
de edad lo hizo dar el “sí” por segunda vez en su vida. Conoció a Elda, de 87 años,
en la clase de hidrogimnasia. La atracción fue instantánea. Pero desde entonces,
tuvieron que superar los prejuicios propios y ajenos para decidir que valía la pena
darle al amor una nueva oportunidad.

“The first marriage was to raise a family. This one is the marriage to enjoy.”
That is how Ruben sums up the love story that, at 94, moved him to
say “I do” for the second time in his life. He met 87-year-old Elda at his
water gym class. The attraction was instant. And since then, they’ve
had to overcome prejudice to decide that it was worth giving love
a second chance.

En 2008, Abend y Loeff estrenaron “Hit”,
un largometraje documental que cuenta las
historias íntimas y personales que se
esconden detrás de algunas de las más
inolvidables canciones uruguayas.
Fue la película nacional más vista en el año de
su estreno en Uruguay, con más de 40.000
espectadores —un logro poco común para un
documental— y rompió record de tiempo en
cartel.
Al año siguiente se estrenó en Argentina,
donde había participado en el Festival
Internacional de Cine Independiente de
Buenos Aires (BAFICI).
“Hit” fue premiada por mejor montaje,
música original y revelación por la Asociación
de Críticos de Cine de Uruguay.

“Hit”, a feature-length documentary on the
stories behind some of Uruguay’s most
popular songs.
During more than three months in theaters,
the film topped the national box office that
year with more than 40,000 spectators —a
rare achievement for a documentary—.
The film later premiered in Buenos Aires,
where it had been part of the official
selection of the B.A. International
Independent Film Festival (BAFICI).
"Hit" was awarded for best film editing,
original score and revelation by the Film
Critics Association of Uruguay.
El segundo largometraje documental de Abend y Loeff, “La flor de la vida”, recibió
el premio del Fondo para el Fomento y Desarrollo de la Producción Audiovisual
(Fona, Uruguay), el premio MVD Filma del Instituto del Cine y Audiovisual
de Uruguay y el premio al desarrollo de Al Jazeera. Participó en Doc
Montevideo y DocsDF.
Abend and Loeff's feature-length documentary, “La flor de la vida”, received a
Film Production and Development Fund (FONA Award, Uruguay), an MVD Filma
Award from the Uruguayan National Film Institute and an Al Jazeera
development award. It was also part of the Doc Montevideo and DocsDF
pitching sessions.
