Our apprehension of the past relies heavily on cognition, as the general acceptance of historical consciousness as a prerequisite for the apprehension of the past in modern society indicates. Yet, this presumption might be shifting. Just as historical tourism and heritage education increasingly emphasize the “experience” of the past, philosophers of history have started to contemplate the various ways in which the past is “present” beyond cognition. This paper will discuss these recent trends and present some preliminary results of an analysis of the ways Instagram users try to capture the ‘mood’ of the past through filtered photographs. 1
