QUITO, (AFP) –
The President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, said on Saturday that the judgment from an Ecuadorian judge
against the U.S. oil company Chevron, which was ordered to pay 9.5 billion dollars for environmental
damage, must be respected.
“This is the decision of a judge from a sovereign nation, and it is a judgment which must be respected,”
the leader said in his weekly activities report, and added that his government has not been involved in the
trial initiated by rainforest communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
“Good for our countrymen in the Amazon, but we’ve had absolutely nothing to do with this trial, which is
among private parties. Chevron’s strategy is to accuse the government of having exercised political
influence. All of that is false,” Correa said.
He maintained that on the contrary, “in the past there was political influence, but in favor of Chevron (…).
How many things weren’t done, by sell-out governments, to try to keep this trial from happening.”
The president emphasized that “we have maintained absolute impartiality and distance from the case,”
which he labeled as “historic” and in which the Amazon communities have defeated a multi-national oil
company in the largest lawsuit for environmental damage in the history of the country.
On Thursday, Chevron filed an appeal against the decision, which was also appealed by the plaintiffs,
who believe the 9.5 billion dollar award is insufficient.
Judge Nicolas Zambrano, of the Amazon province of Sucumbios (northeast), issued the judgment last
Monday for damage attributed to Texaco, also a U.S. company - acquired by Chevron in 2007 – during its
operation in Ecuador between 1964 and 1990.
The plaintiffs – some 30,000 – accuse Texaco of dumping toxins which damaged the water, the ground
and the health of indigenous peoples, some of whom died of cancer.

QUITO, (AFP) El presidente de Ecuador, Rafael Correa, expresó el sábado que tiene que ser respetada una sentencia dictada por
un juez ecuatoriano contra la petrolera estadounidense Chevron, la cual fue condenada a pagar 9.500 millones de
dólares por daños ambientales.
"Ha sido la decisión de un juez de un país soberano, y es una sentencia que tiene que respetarse", dijo el
mandatario en su informe semanal de labores, y agregó que su gobierno no se ha involucrado en el juicio
planteado por comunidades de la selva de la Amazonia ecuatoriana.
"Bien por los compañeros de la Amazonia, pero nosotros no hemos tenido absolutamente nada que hacer en ese
juicio, que es entre privados. La estrategia de Chevron es acusar al gobierno que ha habido influencia política.
Todo eso es falso", manifestó Correa.

Sostuvo que más bien "antes sí había influencia política, pero a favor de Chevron (...). Cuántas cosas no se
hicieron para tratar de impedir este juicio por parte de gobiernos entreguistas".
El presidente recalcó que "nosotros hemos mantenido absoluta imparcialidad y lejanía del caso", al que tildó de
"histórico" y en el que comunidades amazónicas han vencido a una transnacional petrolera en el proceso más
grande de la historia del país sobre reparaciones por daño ambiental.
El jueves, Chevron presentó un recurso contra el fallo, el cual también fue apelado por los demandantes que
consideran insuficiente el monto de 9.500 millones de dólares.
El juez Nicolás Zambrano, de la provincia amazónica de Sucumbíos (noreste), dictó la sentencia el pasado lunes
por daños atribuidos a la también estadounidense Texaco -adquirida por Chevron en 2001- durante su operación
en Ecuador entre 1964 y 1990.
Los demandantes -unos 30.000- acusan a Texaco de verter tóxicos que dañaron el agua, el suelo y la salud de
indígenas que incluso murieron de cáncer.
