‘Start With I’
Can you believe that it is already March? While we just went through the snowiest February
on record in our state, we see many bright days ahead in the month of March. This month at
school we will host some great experiences for our kids. Our wrestling team will compete
through the month and represent us at the district meet. Our drama program will entertain
us with a program at the end of the month. The last week of the month Prairie will again
host our annual Optimist Speech Contest. This is truly one of the best events we host in our
year. Please encourage your child to be part of this as it teaches speech writing, public
speaking, and allows us to hear our kids’ voices. Needless to say, it is going to be a great
month!
This month at school we will explicitly talk with our kids around the Prairie value of
Accountability. This is a value that I see grows in conjunction with independence. As a
former elementary teacher, I often remind our kids that even in 5th grade, students are
walked from the classroom to the library, cafeteria, or to the gym. At Prairie, a kids’
independence is increased in them having a locker and the freedom to get themselves from
one class to the next. By the time they get to Overland, kids will have a schedule that offers
an off period for them to use for their own choosing. And when they get to college, they are
on their own. As we understand this progression, it is important that we teach our kids that
with independence comes accountability.
Testing is a part of the educational world we live in. Whether it is a 6th grader taking the
state assessment, an 11th grader preparing for the ACT, a college student preparing for the
MCAT, or a prospective teacher taking a licensure exam, we know that tests give our world a
level of accountability. Having a school community that has studied Carol Dweck’s work
Mindset, we understand that tests are nothing to but an opportunity to see how we’ve
grown and give us the opportunity to identify areas that can continue to work on. The
growth mindset allows us to understand this. Dweck states, “In one world – the world of
fixed traits – success is about proving you’re smart or talented. Validating yourself. In the
other – the world of changing qualities – it’s about stretching yourself to learn something
new. Developing yourself.”
And that is the key to the idea of Accountability, starting with you. In our kids’ world today,
they experience many of the same challenges we faced when we were in middle school.
Self-identity, social relationships, changing bodies, and increased academic expectations are
all part of the adolescent’s life. There are also new ‘generational’ challenges like social
media and preparing for a global economy. In all of this, it is paramount for our kids to
understand that accountability starts with them. It is often easier to identify all the other
wrongs that happen in class, on social media, and in the neighborhood.
Yet, if we can help them come to the understanding that they are only in control of
themselves, their growth in independence will flourish. When they make it to class on time,
when they resolve peer conflict, when they earn a 3.5 grade point average, when they help a
friend in a time of need, or help a sibling with work around the home, they will learn a
valuable lesson that we all need to be reminded of.
Our life and our future is what we make of it.

‘Empezar Con Uno Mismo’
¿Puedes creer que ya es marzo? Mientras acabamos de pasar por el mes de febrero más nevoso en el
registro en nuestro estado, vemos muchos días brillantes por delante en el mes de marzo. Este mes
recibiremos algunas grandes experiencias para nuestros niños en la escuela . Nuestro equipo de
lucha (wrestling) competirá durante el mes y nos representarán en el distrito. Nuestro programa de
Drama nos entretendrá con una funsion al final del mes. La semana pasada del mes la Pradera
recibirá otra vez nuestra Competición del Discurso del Optimista anual. Esto es realmente uno de los
mejores acontecimientos que recibimos en nuestro año. Por favor anime a su hijo a ser la parte de
esto ya que enseña la escritura del discurso, el hablar público, y permite que nosotros oigamos las
voces de nuestros niños. ¡Huelga decir que, va a ser un gran mes!
Este mes en la escuela se hablo con nuestros estudiantes en torno al valor de Prarie de rendición de
cuentas. Este es un valor que creo que crece junto con la independencia. Como ex maestra de
primaria, a menudo me recuerda a los niños que, incluso en 5o grado, los estudiantes se camina
desde el aula de la biblioteca, cafetería, o al gimnasio. En Prairie, un estudiante aumenta la
independencia en un armario y la libertad a obtener de una clase a la siguiente. Al momento que
llegan a Overland, los niños tendrán un programa que ofrece un período para que lo utilicen para su
elección. Y cuando lleguen a la universidad, se valeran por si mismos. Tal como entendemos esta
progresión, es importante que enseñemos a nuestros hijos que con la independencia viene la
rendición de cuentas.
Los examenes son parte de la educación en el mundo en que vivimos. Ya sea um estudiante de 6to
grado tomando la evaluación de estatal, un estudiante del 11vo grado preparandoce para el ACT, o un
estudiante de colegio para preparar el MCAT, o un maestro tomando un examen de licenciatura,
sabemos que las pruebas dan a nuestro mundo un nivel de responsabilidad. Tener una comunidad
escolar que ha estudiado el trabajo de Carol Dweck “Mindset,” por lo que comprendemos que las
pruebas no son sino la oportunidad de ver cómo hemos crecido y nos da la oportunidad de identificar
las áreas que pueden seguir trabajando. El crecimiento “mindset” nos permite comprender esto.
Dweck, dice lo siguiente: el mundo de rasgos fijos - El éxito es por probar tu inteligencia o talento.
Validarce usted mismo. En el otro, el cambiante mundo de cualidades - se trata de estirar para
aprender algo nuevo. Elaborarse a uno mismo."
Y esa es la clave de la idea de la rendición de cuentas, empezando por usted. En el mundo de nuestros
niños, en la actualidad, experimentan muchos de los mismos desafíos que enfrentamos cuando
estábamos en la escuela secundaria. La propia identidad, las relaciones sociales, cambios de cuerpo, y
la mayor expectativas académicas son parte de la vida de los adolescentes. También hay nuevos retos
"generacional" como medios de comunicación social y la preparación de una economía global. En
todo esto, es de suma importancia para nuestros hijos a comprender que la responsabilidad empieza
con ellos. A menudo, es más fácil identificar a todas las otras injusticias que ocurren en clase, en los
medios sociales, y en el vecindario.
Sin embargo, si podemos ayudar a llegar a un entendimiento de que sólo están en control de sí
mismos, su crecimiento en la independencia prosperara. Cuando llegan a la clase a tiempo, cuando
resuelven conflictos entre si mismos, cuando ganan un promedio general de 3.5, cuando ayudan a un
amigo en un momento de necesidad, o ayudan a un hermano con el trabajo en el hogar, van a
aprender una valiosa lección que todos necesitamos ser tarea.
Nuestra vida y nuestro futuro, es lo que hagamos con ella.
