Build interest by asking a question such as the following: ¿Han planeado alguna vez una sorpresa para alguien? Read the title and author and talk about the cover illustration. Tell students that the story is realistic fiction told by a boy, Pedro, who is helping to work on a sixteenthbirthday present for his sister, Ana. Introduce the Text Guide students through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that the illustration shows Pedro, Ana, and their parents at dinnertime. Suggested language: Pedro dice que Papi y Mami parecían estar distraídos. ¿Qué significa estar distraído? Pages 4–5: Pedro describes working with his Uncle Tito on his sister’s gift. Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, help students understand these points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text • Pedro works hard to restore a car for his sister’s birthday present. • It is possible to love someone in your family but still feel jealous about the attention they get. • The author includes many descriptions to help readers visualize the story. • Pedro begins to resent the hard work and feels jealous about the attention Ana’s party is getting. • Difficult tasks take many steps to accomplish. • The language sounds realistic, the way a family would speak to each other. • Pedro realizes that his family has not ignored him and remembers why he wanted to surprise Ana. • Helping others can make you feel good. • The author uses sequence words to help explain how Pedro and Uncle Tito fixed the car. © 2006. Choices for Further Support • Fluency Invite students to choose a passage from the text to act out while demonstrating phrasing fluent reading. Remind students to pause after punctuation by taking short breaths after commas and stopping after periods and questions marks. • Comprehension Based on your observations of the students’ reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind students to go back to the text to support their ideas. • Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Point out that adding a suffix such as -ción or -oso can change a verb to a noun. Examples in the story include celebración (p. 4), distribución (p. 6), calurosos and pegajosos (p. 7).
