Executive Order on Immigration to Take Effect Despite
Efforts to Block It

U.S. citizens and legal residents who fulfill
certain other requirements. Exact dates of
implementation have not been confirmed for
the other parts of Mr. Obama’s executive
order, but they should go into effect in the
near future.
A number of provisions of President
Obama’s executive actions on immigration
are due to go into effect in the near future.
On February 18, 2015, the Deferred Action
for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program will
be expanded, removing the maximum age
of applicants. Applicants of any age who
entered the U.S. before they turned 16,
have lived here continuously since January
1, 2010, and meet several other
requirements will be eligible to apply.
Around May 20, 2015, President Obama’s
Deferred Action for Parental Accountability
(DAPA) program is due to go into effect.
This will give temporary protection from
deportation and work permits to parents of
Conservative politicians, mostly
Republicans, are attempting to block these
changes through various means. 26 states
have joined a lawsuit against the federal
government claiming that Mr. Obama went
beyond his constitutional authority in taking
these actions, and that they should
therefore be blocked.
A federal judge heard arguments in the
case on January 15, marking the beginning
of a potentially lengthy court battle. The
states are hoping that implementation of the
law will be blocked in the meantime, but the
judge has made no decision so far.
Meanwhile, conservative politicians in
Congress are attempting to block these
changes by passing laws related to
Deferred Action and the Department of
Homeland Security more generally.
However, these actions have been opposed

by most Democratic politicians and the
White House.
At this point, all efforts to block Mr. Obama’s
executive order have failed, and the White
House is preparing for their implementation
in the near future. The changes could
potentially allow some four to five million
undocumented immigrants come out of the
shadows, be able to work legally and live
without fear of deportation.
