Neurology: NeuroImaging, Neurosciences & Brain Diseases
The Madrid-MIT M+Visión Consortium is a partnership of leaders in science, medicine, engineering, business, and the
public sector dedicated to strengthening Madrid’s position as a global center of biomedical research by accelerating innovation in
biomedical imaging, promoting translational research, and encouraging entrepreneurship. It was founded by Comunidad de Madrid,
through Fundación madri+d para el Conocimiento, in 2010, in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Abstract
This session on Neuroimaging & Neuroscience is based on lectures followed by panel discussion and question-answer sessions.
Leaders in imaging research present current work in their field by presentation of the dramatic success of imaging in the clinic and
discuss open challenges and opportunities faced by physicians, scientists, and engineers. Three main topics will be covered in this
session: Neuro-degeneration & Alzheimer’s Disease from Basic Science side, Neurological and Psychiatric disorders from the
clinical side and, finally technical and radiological challenges in neuroimaging. Talks start from basic science followed by the
clinical point of view and finishing with technical aspects of neuroimaging. Topics will include early-onset psychosis, which starts
before 18 years of age and has poor clinical prognosis. Its etiology is unknown but psychosis is known to affect brain maturation
and functioning. Also, neurological impairments and cognitive decline related to neuro-degeneration, brain connectivity, neuropathological findings in dementia & Alzheimer. As another example, tumors present an ongoing current challenge in the diagnostic
imaging of brain tumors and epileptogenic lesions. Technical issues and the usefulness of advanced techniques such as perfusion,
diffusion or spectroscopy, will be shown as tools to improve the diagnosis, as well as its limitations, suggesting new avenues of
technological development. The session will be divided in three slots.
Open House
The Neurology mini-course also includes an open house session, featuring short presentations of current work at Centro de
Alzheimer Fundación Reina Sofia. Outside presentations are invited in exchange for waived course fees.
