The Beowulf Poet
Setting: Northern Europe, sixth century A.D.
Hrothgar is king of the Danes, and his great hall is called Herot. The monster Grendel
keeps killing King Hrothgar’s warriors in the great hall. Herot is now empty because
of the monster. One day, a warrior named Beowulf arrives in Denmark. He offers to
kill Grendel with his bare hands. Unferth, one of Hrothgar’s warriors, calls Beowulf a
boastful fool. Beowulf tells of his brave acts to prove that he is strong and courageous.
Beowulf goes off to fight Grendel. He does not yet know that Grendel’s mother
will seek her revenge.
