Santa Monica Commission on the Status of Women
Mission:
The purpose of the Commission on the Status of
Women is to enhance the status of women in our
community. The Commission will promote these
goals through investigation of, advocacy for, and
policy development regarding issues relevant to
women and girls, and by creating leadership and
career advancement opportunities for women and
girls in our community.

EMERGENCY NUMBERS
 Review and promote “The 2004 Report
on the Status of Women & Girls in Santa
Monica.
 Raise awareness of and seek solutions
for domestic violence and other safety
issues impacting Santa Monica women
and girls.
 Identify, publicize and support
mentoring and leadership opportunities
that serve young women and girls in
Santa Monica.
Who We Are:
Established in 1981, City Council appoints
nine (9) volunteer women Commissioners who
live in Santa Monica to serve a 4 year term.
Individuals appointed represent various
segments of the City’s population.
Appointments to the Commission are made
throughout the year as vacancies occur. All
appointments are voted on by City Council
during a Council Meeting after reviewing
applications and hearing recommendations from
current Commissioners .
 Gain a better understanding of how
affordable housing affects women in
Santa Monica and determine the COSWs
role in addressing the issue.
