Gilberto Escobedo The Letter to the Hebrews today sings a hymn of praise to Abraham and to his faith, upon which are founded the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Abraham is called “father” in faith by more people on earth than anybody else, numerous as the sands of the seashore or the stars of the heavens. Hebrews tells us it was this foundational faith that led Abraham to obey God’s call when he heard it, though he was called to journey to a land he did not know and told he would father a mighty race through a marriage he thought was barren. But Abraham’s faith, the author of Hebrews tells us, was his realization of what he hoped for, and the evidence of what he could not see. How often are we, in simple daily events of our own Christian vocation, called to an unfamiliar place or told we are to do something we do not believe we can? How fortunate we are to have Father Abraham as our guide and example! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Gilberto/Un Mensaje del Padre Gilberto We Are Under Construction I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your continued support to our church and in a special way to our building fund. As you can see every Sunday you come to mass we are under a full bloom seismic retrofitting and the renovations of the church. I hope and pray that soon all of this will be done so we can enjoy our fully renovated church. All of you from our different communities have been very generous in different ways, with your prayers, with your time and talent, and also with your generosity and I want you to know that I truly appreciate all your efforts. I would like to share with you a few examples of good stewardship from the children of our community who have a lot to teach us about sharing our time, talent and treasure. One of our altar servers from our Sunday 5:00 p.m. mass celebrated her 12th birthday this last June, and she told her parents that in lieu of gifts she wanted her relatives and friends to donate to the building fund of Saint Boniface. She was able to raise and donate $400 to our building fund on the occasion of her birthday, thank you very much Chloe Kate Miniano for your thoughtfulness. I also found an envelope and a note in Spanish on the collection on the weekend of June 19th from Emerick Rodriguez. This is what he wrote (I am translating his note): “I am 9 years old and my name is Emerick Rodriguez; my donation is $21.00 this is all I have in my piggy bank, and this money is for the construction of the church. May the Lord Bless my family.” I was very touched and appreciative of the thoughtfulness and generosity of these little ones. Again, I want to thank all of you for your generosity and for being good stewards of our family community. 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time Decimonoveno Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Jubilee Year of Mercy August 7, 2016 Last Sunday’s “Parable of the rich fool” delivered a compelling reason to do the right thing—now: “You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you” (Luke 12:20). Today, Jesus warns us: “You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come” (12:40). Though we do not know when our Master will come, we do know what our Master expects to find. Jesus expects us to be vigilant (12:37) and diligent (12:42) in our work for the kingdom, but also filled with reverent mercy toward our fellow servants and ourselves. Hopefully, Jesus’ warning not to get drunk and beat each other up (12:45) does not apply to us literally! But what changes do I need to make, right now, so that the many people outside “the Master’s house” will want to come inside to experience the healing comfort of Jesus’ own mercy in the compassion of Jesus’ modern-day disciples? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
