What if I’m homeless?

Do I need any identification
to vote?
•
Yes, but you do not need a photo ID. The photo ID law
that was passed in 2013 will not be in effect until 2014.
You’ll be asked to show one of the following:

Virginia voter registration card
Social Security card
Valid Virginia driver’s license
Any other ID card issued by an agency of Virginia,
one of its political subdivisions (e.g., a county) or
the United States

Any valid student identification card issued by
an institution of higher education located in the
Commonwealth
Any valid employee identification card containing
a photograph
A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement,
government check, or paycheck that shows your
name and address
If you can’t show the proper ID, you will be allowed to
vote a provisional ballot. However, that provisional ballot
will not count unless you provide the required ID to the
electoral board, in person or by mail, fax, or email, by
noon on the third day after the election.

What time do the polls open and close?
All polls open at 6 am and close at 7 pm.
What if I’m in line when the polling place
closes, but haven’t voted yet?
You are entitled to vote. Any voter waiting in line to vote (whether
inside or outside) when the polls close must be permitted to vote.
What if I registered,
but my name doesn’t
appear on the list at
the polling place?
If you’re not on the poll list, ask a poll
worker to confirm that you’re at the
correct polling place.
Even if your name doesn’t appear on
the list, you can still vote a regular
ballot if all of the following conditions
are met:

What if I have a disability?
All polling places and voting devices must be accessible to elderly
voters and voters with disabilities. Voters with disabilities are also
entitled to voting assistance inside or immediately outside the
polling place.
Am I entitled to time off from work to
vote?
Virginia law doesn’t require employers to give their employees time
off of work to vote, but your employer may have its own policy
allowing you to do so. Ask your employer well before Election Day.

Yes, your child age 15 or younger can
enter the polling booth with you.
What if I need voting assistance?
You are entitled to voting assistance if you cannot read or write,
have difficulty understanding English, or have a disability that
impairs your ability to vote. You may select any individual to
help you vote, as long as they are not your employer, union
representative, or an employer/union agent.
In addition, if you are elderly or have a physical disability, you can
request a paper ballot from an election officer outside the polling
place but within 150 feet of the entrance. What if I have difficulty understanding
English?
If you vote in Fairfax County, all election materials, including
ballots, will be provided in Spanish. Otherwise, you are entitled
to receive assistance from a person of your choosing (as long as
they’re not your employer/union representative/agent).
Can my right
to vote be
challenged?
Yes, any qualified VA voter can
challenge your right to vote. What happens if my
vote is challenged?
If you are challenged, an
election officer will explain
the voter qualifications and
ask you questions regarding
your qualifications. If your
answers indicate that you
are qualified, an election
officer will ask you to sign
a pre-written statement
affirming your eligibility. If
you sign that statement, you
must be allowed to vote a
regular ballot.

local registrar’s office and vote at the same time
or request an absentee ballot to be sent to you by
