SALIDA DESDE ÁMSTERDAM A HANNOVER EN EL VUELO KL 1909
10:40 Salimos de Madrid con escala en Ámsterdam.
Es curioso lo rápido que hemos congeniado la gente del grupo de Madrid; es
curioso lo fácilmente que ampliamos las relaciones sociales cuando vamos al
extranjero.
10.40 h: We leave Madrid with Flight KL 1700 to Amsterdam to get connecting
flight KL 1909 to Hanover.
It’s funny to see how well and how quickly people in the group from Antonio
Machado School, who hardly knew each other before this moment, are getting
on. It’s funny to realise how going abroad widens our social environment.
Me ha llamado mucho la atención todos los medios de que disponemos para
grabar, congelar imágenes y recuerdos con cámaras digitales, de video. Casi
todos, por no decir todos, disponíamos de ellas y las hemos utilizado en el viaje.
Lo que más me ha llamado la atención del aeropuerto de Ámsterdam, porque
no hemos salido de el, ha sido la cadena del water, que se tira automáticamente
por sensores, al levantarte. Aun no he sentido mucho que estuviera en el
extranjero porque nos hemos arropado unos a otros, aunque no nos
conozcamos todavía.
I feel impressed by all the hardware we have at our disposal to freeze images
and memories. Practically everybody has a video or a digital camera and is
using it from the beginning of the journey.
We do not leave the airport in Amsterdam since there is hardly any time in
between flights. A funny detail calls for my attention: the loo flushes
automatically as you get up. I do not yet feel we are abroad since we all stick
together, forming a really compact group even though we hardly know each
other as yet.
Acabo de terminar el libro ‘’Llévame a casa’’ y me ha decepcionado un poco;
me hubiera ilusionado que en este viaje hubiera tenido mas importancia este
libro para mí, pero no ha sido así.
I have just finished the book “Take me home” and I feel a bit disappointed. I
wish it could have had more importance for me in this journey, but it hasn’t.
En cierto modo cuando emprendes un viaje, siempre te viene a la cabeza, la
idea de tener aventuras, de que tu vida cambie, de que algo pase. El otro día

Y me apetecía recordarlo, porque cuando se viaja se rompen barreras,
prejucios y estereotipos y eso hace mucha falta, la verdad.
When you start on a journey you feel that your life is going to change somehow,
that you are going to live some adventures, that something is going to happen.
The other day a got an e-mail from a friend it had a text from Paolo Cohelo
MACKTUB:
A circus tamer manages to keep an elephant imprisoned using a very
simple trick: when the animal is still a baby he ties one of his legs to a very
thick trunk. Hard as it tries, the little elephant cannot manage to get loose.
Little by little he gets used to the idea that the trunk is more powerful than
him. When he becomes an adult, and a very strong one, it is enough to tie
his leg to a stake and he will not try to get loose since he remembers that
he tried many times to do it in the past without success. As the little
elephant, we very often find our feet tied to something very small but we
dare not get free since we have got used to the imaginary strength of that
trunk without realising that a small gesture will suffice to discover our
freedom in all its extension.
I felt like remembering this because when you travel you break barriers,
stereotypes and prejudices and we really need this.
Llegamos a Hanover a las 17:00 aproximadamente, nos reciben las familias y
todos-as los-as españoles estamos con los nervios a flor de piel, en los
primeros momentos porque no sabemos cómo vamos a reaccionar ante una
nueva familia y una situación desconocida
Nos llevan a su casa unos vecinos de Eva y nada mas llegar hablo con su
abuela su madre y ella, sobre el viaje, la vida, nuestros intereses...
We arrive in Hanover at approximately 17:00 h. The German families are there
waiting for us and we Spaniards are nervous at the beginning because we do
not know how we are going to react in front of a new family and an unknown
situation. Eva’s neighbours take us to her home and I start talking to her, her
mother and her grandmother the moment I arrive at their home. We talk about
our journey, about our respective interests, about life in general …
Luego, por la noche, vamos casi todos españoles y los alemanes a una
discoteca a unos 15 Km. de Rinteln, la cual tiene diferentes ambientes de
música. La forma de pagar en la discoteca es que te dan un ticket y según la
consumición que se tome, te van picando y luego al salir de la discoteca te
cobran las copas tomadas, y si pierdes el ticket te cobran 30 euros, es la
primera vez que veo esta forma de pago en una discoteca, pienso que es muy
funcional.
Then in the evening most of the Spaniards and our hosts go a disco which is
about 15 Km from Rinteln and has different areas with different types of music.
They have an interesting and practical system for charging their clients: you get
a ticket and they mark it each time you have a drink. At the exit you par for the
drinks marked on your ticket; if you lose the ticket you pay 30 €.
DOMINGO 10 DE ABRIL DE 2005
SUNDAY APRIL 10TH 2005
Hoy es un día familiar y con una mañana bastante tranquila, porque nos hemos
despertado tarde. Comemos comida vegetariana. Tienen tres tipos diferentes
de pan; el postre casero lo ha hecho Regina, la madre de Eva.
Por la tarde nos vamos a jugar al billar con algunos españoles y alemanes.
Más tarde cenamos en un bar-restaurante que está en el centro de Rinteln y se
llama la Bodega.
Algunas españolas y alemanas están en otra mesa porque en el intercambio
hay personas alemanas que no se conocen, porque son de diferentes clases.
Hablamos en la mesa de la vida breve pero intensa en la familia alemana.
Today is a family day with a very relaxed morning because we have woken up
late. We have vegetarian food. They have three different types of bread. The
home made dessert has been prepared by Regina, Eva’s mother.
In the afternoon we go to play billiards with some German and Spanish friends.
Later we have dinner at a restaurant which is in the centre of Rinteln and is
called “La Bodega”.
There are some Spanish and German girls sitting at a different table because
some of the German students do not know each other either since they come
from different classes, as we do.
At our table we discuss the short but intense experience we have had living with
our German families.
LUNES 11 DE ABRIL DE 2005
MONDAY, APRIL 11TH 2005
7:45 Nos dan la bienvenida el director junto con dos profesores que hablan
español, cuando llegamos a la aula tenemos colgadas las banderas de la
Comunidad Europea, de España y de Alemania. Se establece un debate entre
los alumnos españoles y un profesor comentando el sistema educativo alemán,
puesto que el propio sistema educativo sesga a los alumnos diferenciándolos
en tres tipos de institutos, entre los estudiantes más aptos y menos aptos según
sus capacidades.
7: 45 h. The German director and two Spanish speaking teachers welcome us.
When we get into the classroom we find the Spanish, the German and the
European flags. A debate starts between some Spanish students and one of
the teachers who is explaining the German educational system sin there they
start streaming the students since they are very young (10-11 years old) into
different types of schools according to their intellectual capabilities.
Luego, a la hora de la comida, dejamos las mochilas fuera del aula en la que
nos disponíamos a comer, y me sorprendió el civismo y la confianza que tenían
al dejar sus pertenencias fuera.
Then at lunch time we left our rucksacks outside the class where we were going
to eat and I was surprised to see how they left their belongings unattended in all
confidence.
Trajeron cada uno de los alemanes la comida de casa, para realizar el Welcome
Lunch, una especie de self-service, pero con comida fría. Se organizaron muy
bien puesto que trajeron comida variada, postres y tartas caseras. A
continuación se mostró un corto de unos alumnos del Antonio Machado se
llamaba el ‘’Rap de las Cigüeñas’’ y mostraba la vida de estos animales en
forma de rap.
The German students brought food from their homes to have a Welcome Lunch.
They got wery well organised and there was plenty of varied and delicious home
made food. Afterwards we saw a short film made by students from Antonio
Machado school which was called “The Storks Rap” and showed the life of
these emblematic animals from Alcala using a rap.
Al terminar la comida nos dieron las instrucciones del juego de pistas o Rally
por Rinteln que íbamos a hacer esa tarde, en el cual nos designaban con que
personas nos tocaba participar por grupos de Cuatro y el orden asignado a las 7
pruebas para que en ningún momento nos juntáramos con otro grupo.
After lunch the German students gave us instructions for the next activity: a
Rally through Rinteln. We got organised into groups of four and we received
written instructions to carry out 7 different tasks starting at different points of the
town so that the different groups would never coincide.
Desde el Gymnasium Ernestinum de Rinteln nos dirigimos andando al centro
para que allí comenzáramos todos juntos.
We walked from Gymnasium Ernestinum to the town centre to start the Rally.
Los papeles que nos entregaron para comenzar el juego eran más o menos así
Nos entregaron a cada grupo un plano de la ciudad con los números situados
en donde se encontraban las personas que nos explicarían y harían diferentes
pruebas

Each group got a paper with a map of the town with numbers where different
German students were waiting for us to set the different tasks. Our group,
number 4, was formed by Isabel, Cristina, Darío and Marina, and the order of
our tasks was: 4-7-3-2-6-5-1
PRUEBAS-Los alemanes leían un trozo de papel en el cual tenían escritos una
reseña de la explicación del monumento, parque, edificio...
Tasks: The German students read a piece of paper where they had written an
explanation of the corresponding monument, park or building.
1 prueba) teníamos que colocarnos una gominola en la cabeza y llevarla hasta
la boca sin tocarla con las manos.
Task 1: we had to put a wine gum on our head and bring it to our mouth without
touching it with our hands.
2 prueba) buscar bollos escondidos en un parque, (que uno de los últimos
grupos no pudo encontrar porque unos niños que andaban por allí, los robaron).
Task 2: looking for cakes hidden in a park (one of the last groups could not find
them because some children who were playing around there stole them).
3 prueba) decir el mayor numero de palabras en Alemán.
Task 3: tos ay as many words as we could in German.
4 prueba) decir un numero aproximado de habitantes que habitan en Rinteln.
Task 4: to say the approximatenumber of inhabitants in Rinteln.
5 prueba) Correr por el puente en el menor tiempo posible.
Task 5: to run across the bridge in the shortest time posible.
6 prueba) Decir el numero de pueblos que tiene Rinteln.
Task 6: Tos ay how many villages Rinteln has.
7 prueba) Adivinar por mímica unas palabras.
Task 7: to guess some words explained through mimics.
Este Rally fue para conocer la ciudad, pero hubo personas que nos les quedo
claro que era un juego e hicieron una competición por ver quien llegaba antes
The Rally was organised for us to get familiar with the town, but some people
did not realise it was a game and they really competed to be the winners.
A las 19:00 quedamos en la bolera, y fue impresionante ver a 50 personas, 8
pistas, todas a la vez en un espacio en el que solo estábamos nosotros, y la
verdad que fue muy divertido, terminamos aproximadamente a las 22:00
Luego fuimos a cenar a casa de nuestros compañeros alemanes, hablamos con
nuestra familia asignada y ¡a dormir!
At 17.00 h we met at the bowling place and it was impressive to see more than
50 people, 8 tracks all occupied by us; the whole bowling place reserved for us.
It was real fun. We left at approximately 22.00 h. then we went for dinner a tour
hosts houses and, To bed!
MARTES 12 DE ABRIL DE 2005

Excursión a Berlín a las 6:00 en autobús. Fueron cuatro horas de sueño para
algunos y de risas para otros, comentando las situaciones peculiares a la hora
de expresarnos en un idioma que la mayoría desconocemos pero que por lo
menos intentamos expresarnos en inglés, mediante mímica, y utilizando todo
tipo de recursos.
Trip to Berlin. We leave at 6.00h. A four hour bus drive: some of us sleep,
some laugh while commenting the peculiar situations we find ourselves in when
we have to express ourselves in a language we do not know, but at least we try
to communicate in English, using mimics, all types of communication devices
and resources.
Luego tuvimos una visita guiada de unas horas, en el autobús por la zona
emblemática de Berlín.
Then we had a bus guided tour through the emblematic area of central Berlin.
A las 12 aproximadamente nos dejaron en Alexander Plazt, para que por grupos
de cuatro-cinco personas recorriéramos Berlín, este número de personas fue
así, porque nos dieron unos billetes que valían para esta cantidad de personas,
y para casi todos los transportes públicos.
At about midday we were dropped at Alexander Platz so that we could go
around Berlin with a map and a day card which gave access to all public
transportation to a group of 5 people. We were supposed to form groups of 5
people with a leader who will carry the day card.
Al principio fuimos las 50 personas juntas por Berlín, acción que era un poco
caótica porque no avanzamos para ver monumentos en tan poco tiempo.
At the beginning all 50 students went together around Berlin, which was rather
chaotic because we could not advance and see the sights in such a short time
as we had.
Al final un grupo de 15 personas nos separamos del resto para hacer más
práctica la visita, aunque todos queríamos estar juntos.
In the end, a group of 15 people got separated from the big group to make the
visit to the town more practical, though in Fac. We all wanted to be together.
Vimos el Reichstag, el muro de Berlín, Check Point Charlie, la puerta de
Brandenburgo (en la cual había cuatro gaiteros y un señor pintando la puerta
cómicamente mientras seguía el ritmo de los gaiteros); vimos un concierto en la
embajada de Bulgaria, pasamos por la embajada británica, caminamos hacia
Check Point Charlie y vimos mas edificios y monumentos, la pena es que no
nos dio tiempo a ver más museos como el Guggenheim, o el museo judio, entre
otros.
We saw the Reichstag, the Berlin Wall, Check Point Charlie, the Branderbourg
Gate (where there were four pipers and a man painting the gate in a funny way
while keeping the rhythm the pipers were setting); we saw a concert at the
Bulgarian Embassy, we went pass the British Embassy, we walked towards
Check Point Charlie and we saw more buildings and monuments but,
unfortunately, we couldn’t see the Gugenheim Museum or the Jew Museum,
among others, because there was not any more time.
Hubo personas a las que les daba pena que hubiera tanta conmemoración a los
muertos, pero la verdad que es una ciudad que impresiona.
La verdad que la impresión que me dio Berlín no desmereció a la realidad es
tan grandiosa como lo imaginaba.
Some of us felt sad that there were so many memories of the dead ones, but
anyway, Berlin is a very impressive city.
Berlin did not disappoint me, it was as great as I imagined.
El tema de que no se hayan hecho subgrupos dentro de tantas personas me ha
llamado la atención puesto que ha habido muy buena conexión entre ambos
países a grandes rasgos, y eso es difícil que surja y se consiga.
I find it quite interesting that there have been no subgroups formed in such a big
group; it is probably due to the excellent connexion there has been among the
students from the two countries. This is not so easy to manage normally.
Hubo varias personas que se fueron antes al punto de encuentro en el cual
habíamos quedado a las 20:00 y cogieron un taxi, (una bici con dos asientos
traseros) en el cual, comentaron que les llamo la atención que pararan el
taxímetro en los semáforos, acción que es bastante justa y que no estaría mal
que lo aplicaran los taxistas en el mundo.
There were a few people who arrived a bit early to the meeting point where we
were supposed to meet at 20.00h and they took a taxi (a bike with two rear
seats). They say that the taxi “rider” stopped the taxi metre at the red lights,
which I find quite fair; the rest of taxi drivers should do it too all over the world.
Volvimos a las 20:00 a Rinteln, y paramos una vez en el camino y compré unas
postales. Cuando llegué a casa de mi compañera alemana su madre me dijo
que estas postales imitaban al pasaporte de la Republica Democrática
Alemana, que le parecían muy interesantes y que en su familia ha habido 10
casos diferentes de personas que han sufrido la 2ª guerra mundial. A raíz de
este comentario sacamos la conversación, también porque en la televisión
pusieron un debate de algunas personas que estuvieron en Auswitz, y le
pregunté que si no creía que seria bueno que se dejase de hablar del tema de
la 2ª guerra mundial y me comentó que no, porque la derecha alemana
pretende tapar este suceso, y no darle la importancia histórica y funesta que ha
tenido, y más que nada para que las nuevas generaciones tengan referentes de
primera mano, para que eviten que esto volviera a pasar. La segunda guerra
mundial y su población están muy afectados con este suceso que ha marcado a
esta sociedad y mundialmente, y no quieren que ocurra nunca en ningún lugar
del mundo.
We got into the bus at 200.00h. On the drive back I bought some postcards.
When I arrived home, my German host and her mother told me that those
postcards were a replica of the one issued by the German Democratic Republic,
that they thought they were very interesting and that in their family there have
been 10 different cases of people who suffered the Second World War. We had
recently seen a debate programme on TV where several people who had been
in Auswitz talked about their experiences. So, we started a conversation on the
topic and I asked my host’s mother whether she thought that it would be a good
idea to stop talking about the Second World War; She said that she didn’t
because the Right Wing people in Germany are trying to cover up the whole
episode and not give it the tremendous historical importance it has had; also, it
is very important that the new generations have first hand information so that
they make sure this will never happen again either in Germany or in any other
place.
MIÉRCOLES DIA 13 DE ABRIL DE 2005

Pilar se encargó de situar a cada uno de los españoles en las clases que
nosotros eligiéramos, entre las que nos propusieron, arte, teatro, ingles y
español.
Pilar, the German teacher, distributed each of us Spaniards into the different
classes available. We could choose among Art, Theatre, English and Spanish
classes.
Me ha llamado la atención en las clases que he visto que los alumnos son los
que llevan más la clase, que los profesores son quienes la dirigen y se
establece más el dialogo; me ha llamado la atención que ponen sus alumnos
alemanes y el respeto y cercanía de ambos profesor-a /alumno-a. Me parece
que hay mucho civismo en general.
What I have seen in the classes I have visited is that the students are those who
carry out the weight of the classes; the teachers direct the class and there is
more dialogue than there is in our classes. It was very interesting to watch the
attention and the respect with which students interact with their teachers, and
the closeness that, nevertheless, exists between them. I think there is a lot of
public spiritedness in general.
A continuación vamos desde el colegio hasta el Pferdemarkt para coger un
autobús que nos llevo al castillo de Bückeburg, castillo habitado por sus
dueños y el cual nos enseñan sólo en parte; lo que más me llama la atención
son sus salones, diferenciados entre el de baile, el que es especifico para
fumar, y otro destinado a señoras o señores mayores que no deseaban o no
podían bailar, al igual que el sistema de calefacción a la hora de realizar las
fiestas de antaño, puesto que tardaban 10 días en calentar uno de los salones
principales, el de baile. El sistema de calefacción es impresionante por su
modernidad; tiene abiertos conductos por las esquinas, en un salón hay cuatro
chimeneas (de las que no hay fotos, puesto que no se nos permitía filmar
ninguna parte de la vivienda interior del castillo); también me llaman la atención
los sillones, que bordaron todas la princesas que han pasado por este castillo,
la última lo hizo con una maquina de coser y la diferencia es notable.
After attending two classes we walk from the school to Pferdemarkt in order to
catch a bus which will take us to Bückeburg castle, a castle which is still being
inhabited by their owners. I find the different drawing rooms most interesting:
There is the Ball room, huge, with a very modern heating system which took
advantage of the hot air produced by the four chimneys located at the four
corners, re-using it to warm up the room; it used to take ten days to heat it up.
There are also smoking rooms only for men, a smaller room adjacent to the Ball
room for older people to watch the ball while they were seated and a ladies
room where they could retire to talk and be alone.
We cannot take photos inside the castle. There is also a collection of
embroidered chairs made by the different princesses who have inhabited the
castle; all of them but the last one have been hand-embroidered, and the
difference is outstanding.
Son llamativas las pinturas que nos observaban en el techo, puesto que tienen
un juego de miradas que te situaras donde te situaras en el salón parecía como
si el personaje ilustrado en el techo te siguiera con la mirada.
The paintings on the ceiling of the Ball Room are very interesting since they are
painted in such a way that they seem to follow you with their eyes no matter
were you are situated in the room.
Después de ver el castillo cogemos el autobús de camino a Rinteln, y allí
volveremos para hacer los 20 Km. en bici a la orilla del río Weser y el Doctor
See, nuestra ruta fue esta: Instituto, Engern, Ahe, Grobenwieden, y de allí
cogemos un mini ferry para cruzar el río y continuamos por Hohenrode, Esten y
de vuelta al instituto. Ha sido una de las excursiones mas divertidas, puesto que
el tiempo y el paisaje eran bastante agradables.
Alter visiting the castle, we take the bus back to Rinteln and , in the afternoon,
we make a 20 km bike tour along the banks of the Weser River and the Doctor
See. This was the route: School, Engern, Ahe, Grobenwieden, and from them
we take a mini-ferry to cross the river and we continue through Hohenrode,
Esten and back to the school again. It has been a great excursion since the
landscape was beautiful and the weather very good.
A las 21:00 quedamos la mayoría en La Bodega, para comentarnos el dia, y
hacer vida social entre todos.
At 21.00 h most of us meet at La Bodega to discuss the day and have some
social life.
JUEVES DIA 14 DE ABRIL DE 2005

Vamos dos horas como casi todos los días a clase, en la primera hora
debatimos un problema que tienen los mexicanos en la tortilla courtain, porque
muchos quieren ir a EE.UU. en inmigración masiva e ilegal. Me gusta que se
debata en las clases y que sean tan participativas, me gusta que les hagan
pensar.
We go to class, as everyday, for the first two hours. In the class of English we
discuss the problem many Mexicans have with the Tortilla Curtain because
many want to get into the USA in a massive and illegal way. I like these debates
in class, I like participative classes, I like it when teachers make students think.
En la segunda clase, inglés avanzado han estado comentando el libro de H.G.
Wells 1984. Han estado colocando cada uno individualmente fichas poniéndolas
en orden de aparición de personajes y situaciones.
In the second class, Advanced English, we have been working with HG Well’s
1984. Each student has brought a card with a character or a situation and they
have put them in order.
Las pizarras que tienen en todas las clases son muy prácticas, puesto que son
movibles de arriba a bajo y se puede plegar convirtiéndola en una sola pizarra.
Tambien estan imantada y es bastante útil.
The blackboards in the classes are very practical since they can be moved up
and down and they can be folded into one. It is also magnetised, which makes it
very useful.
VIERNES DIA 15 DE ABRIL DE 2005

Vamos también a clase pero hay personas que han entrado una hora mas tarde
y en la segunda hora su profesor de ingles no ha asistido a clase.
We also go to class for the first two hours but some students arrive late and
miss their first class and then the English teacher does not come for the second
hour.
Después a las 9:35 h. nos hemos ido a visitar unos yacimientos de hierro, solo
íbamos los españoles hasta el ‘’Kleinenbremen Zeche’’. La visita dura una hora
y media estuvimos a 80 metros por debajo de la tierra a 10º de temperatura
debido a la humedad del sitio. Es bastante interesante la forma que tienen de
extraer el mineral. Normalmente iban en cuadrillas de tres personas que
taladraban la pared de roca a poca distancia unos de otros para luego colocar
en los agujeros cargas de dinamita y volarla para extraer el mineral. Aunque a 4
Km. de donde nos hallábamos estaban aún trabajando activamente esa parte
no nos la muestran. Antes les pagaban por cada carretilla llena de piedras, y el
capataz ganaba una parte de cada una de ellas.
Alfer 9.35 we Spaniards alone have gone to visit an iron mine “Kleinenbremen
Zeche” . The visit lasts one and a half hours and we have been 80 metres
below earth, at 10º centigrades because of the dampness there is inside the
mines. The guide explained how they used to extract the mineral at the
beginning of last century: they worked in teams of three to bore holes in the wall
at 1 meter intervals; then they put dynamite inside the holes and blew them. A
next team came to rake down the mineral and put it into the wagons. They used
to get paid by the wagonful. Though nowadays they are still working at 4 km
from where we are, we cannot visit the active part of the mine.
El material aquí extraído servia para fabricar aviones y todo tipo de maquinaria,
y el ruido que hacían y la polvareda levantada debían de ser impresionantes,
porque trabajaban en seco sin apenas medidas de seguridad y muchos de los
mineros que allí trabajaron padecen sordera en mayor o medida.
La extracción del mineral ha dejado grutas de mucha altura dentro de la mina
que tienen una acústica muy buena y nos comentó el guía que de vez en
cuando han hecho conciertos de piano en la mina proporcionando al público
mantas y calentándoles el asiento con unos cojines que desprendían calor.
The mineral from this mine was used to make aeroplanes and all type of
machines. Two hundred years ago they used to work in very bad conditions,
without protection for their ears or their lungs, and many miners had serious
illness; most of those who have worked there and are now retired suffer from
different degrees of deafness.
A las 12.50 cogemos el autobús público hacia Rinteln, volviendo así al punto de
encuentro. Comemos con la familia.
At 12.50 we match the public bus back to Rinteln. We have lunch with the
families.
A las 19:00 nos vamos al lado del río Weser en un bar amplio, un club que es
para los piragüistas (aquí se practica ese deporte). Cada uno trae su comida
para hacerla en la barbacoa, o las propias familias preparan platos para
compartir con los demás. La fiesta se alarga hasta la 1:00 y es todo un éxito.
At 19.00h we go to the canoe club, a lovely and spacious place, on the bank of
the Weser River. Each German-Spanish pair brings their own food to be cooked
on the barbecue. The families have also prepared salads and cakes to share.
The farewell party goes on until 1.00 a.m. It is a real success.

Pasamos el día con nuestras familias alemanas, hacemos la maleta, y nos
despedimos de nuestra familia y de nuestros amigos alemanes en el
aeropuerto, con mucha pena a pesar de que en menos de una semana nos
volveremos a ver, pero es que hemos conocido a alemanes que no vendrán al
intercambio puesto que no participan en él.
We spend the day with our German families, we pack and we say goodbye to
our German family and friends at the airport, very sad though we are going to
see each other after a week, though some of the German students we have met
will not be coming to Alcalá, since they are not taking part in the exchange.
La verdad es que la mayoría de los españoles volvemos con un buen sabor de
boca de Alemania, algunos echando de menos el agua de España porque la de
allí tiene gas, y nosotros no estamos acostumbrados desde pequeños ella.
Pero en general con un buen recuerdo, puesto que la mayoría de los alemanes
son muy simpáticos, rompiendo así el esquema que se tiene de secos o fríos.
Viajar es lo que tiene, que te abre la mente.
The truth is that most of us, Spaniards, are coming back with very good
memories of Germany. Some of us have missed the water without gas since we
are not used to drinking mineral water with gas. But we all go back to Spain with
a very good feeling, realising that the Germans we have met are very warm and
friendly, and not cold and dry people as the stereotype has it. That’s what
travelling makes for you: it opens up your mind.
