¿A tres lustros de iniciado el siglo XXI, cómo
ve el papel de la mujer peruana?
En un proceso más interesante en donde su rol se le
viene reconociendo cada vez más. Las mujeres han
avanzado de manera espectacular en los últimos 20
a 30 años, asumiendo mayores posiciones no solo
desde el campo político y sobre todo empresarial.
Desde WomenCEO nos interesa mostrar mayor
empoderamiento de la mujer en los cargos de
decisión y esta es una propuesta que busca que ese
espacio logrado por algunas sea cada más amplio.
¿Hay cifras sobre el incremento del aporte
de las mujeres?
Mucho. Hoy la educación en la mujer está casi a
la par con el hombre. En su exposición la doctora
Carmen Plaza nos habló de la experiencia española
que en profesiones de la Ciencia y Tecnología están
a la paridad con el hombre. Esa es una meta todavía
por desarrollar en el Perú. Como WomenCEO nos
invitaron a un evento de las TEC Makers, es decir,
las jóvenes que están en informática, en tecnología
de la información, pero había todavía un horizonte
por desarrollar. Y es anecdótico, porque las mujeres
en el campo de sistemas podrían tener más tiempo
libre para poder compartir una vida familiar con
una profesión; sin embargo, los estereotipos de la
mujer aún son fuertes y hacen ver que la presencia
de los hombres están cubiertas más en algunas
actividades académicas y profesiones a las cuales no
necesariamente ingresa la mujer.
¿Cuáles son las fortalezas y debilidades de la
mujer en el Perú?
Una de las cosas que me encanta mostrar es el
carácter emprendedor y la fortaleza de la mujer
peruana. He tenido toda una vida de experiencia
en el mundo corporativo. Por mi experiencia
profesional tuve relación con países de la región.
Mi nivel de reporte, tenía personas que me
informaban desde Colombia, Ecuador y Bolivia.
Yo veía desde esa época la fuerza. Qué fuerte es
el rol protagónico de la mujer peruana, la mujer

organized the event "Progress in
Gender Equality in the European
Union and Opportunities in Latin
America," and Cecilia Flores, President of WomenCEO Perú,
spoke about the need to work hard in order to progressively
reduce the gaps that separate women from men.
Sixteen years into the twenty-first century, how
do you see the role of Peruvian women?
I see them in a more interesting process, where their
role is increasingly being recognized. Women have
progressed dramatically in the last 20 to 30 years,
assuming higher positions not only in the political arena
but, above all, in business. From WomenCEO, our
interest is to show the greater empowerment of women
in decision-making positions and this is a proposal that
seeks that the space carved out by some women may
gradually become larger and larger.
Are there any figures on the increase in women’s
contribution?
Plenty. At present, women’s education is almost on par
with men’s. In her presentation, Dr. Carmen Plaza told us

colombiana también es fuerte y solidaria. Pero la
mujer peruana sin tener ese contexto de apoyo
cultural sale adelante. La mujer peruana tiene unas
características guerreras muy particulares y sobre
todo un espíritu constante que la hace estudiar,
tener su empresa y liderar un proceso.

¿Está capacitada para desempeñarse en
cualquier situación o carrera profesional?
Absolutamente. A diferencia de las mujeres de
Europa, la mujer peruana no se amilana ante los
retos. Participé de un evento donde mostraban
cuáles eran los obstáculos para acceder a mayores
espacios de desarrollo pleno y ellas decían que
la primera era considerar que otras personas lo
podían decir mejor. Y yo decía, en el Perú no pasa
eso. La mujer peruana habla y opina completamente
about the Spanish experience, where women in scientific
and technological professions are level with men. That is
a goal that has yet to be reached in Peru. A few weeks
ago, we from WomenCEO were invited to an event
organized by TEC Makers, i.e., a group of young women
who are in the fields of computer science and information
technology; but there were still many possibilities that
required development. It is actually anecdotal, because
women in the IT field could have more time to balance a
family life with a career; however, stereotypes of women
are still strong and this makes you realize that men are
more present in some academic activities and professions
that are not necessarily pursued by women.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of
women in Peru?
One of the things I love to show is the entrepreneurial
spirit and strength of Peruvian women. I can look back
at a lifetime of experience in the corporate world. Due
to my profession, I have maintained relationships with
people in several countries in the region. At my level
of reporting, I had people who reported to me from
Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia. In those days already
I saw the strength. I was amazed by the strength of
Peruvian women’s leading role; Colombian women
are also strong and solidary. But, despite a lack of
cultural support, Peruvian women manage to move
forward and prosper. Peruvian women feature very
particular, tenacious characteristics and, particularly, a
relentless spirit that makes them study, have their own
companies, and lead a process.
Are they qualified to do well in any situation or
professional career?
Absolutely. Unlike women in Europe, Peruvian women
are not daunted by challenges. I participated in an
event where they showed the obstacles to access
greater opportunities for full development; and these
women said that the first thing was to consider that
other people could say it better. And I said that this
does not happen in Peru. Peruvian women speak out
and express their opinions quite independently of
their socioeconomic status. Now that I work in the
oil business and look at this role from the point of
view of the State, I have had the opportunity to talk
with Andean women, women from the Amazon, social
leaders who – despite their educational limitations –
accept the challenge and move forward because they
want a better world for their children.
What weaknesses should they overcome?
Their own paradigms. Beyond currently existing social
and cultural stereotypes, which we must tackle with
State policies, there is also a self-limitation.
Are they conservative, perhaps?
I think there is some kind of prejudice when people
think that if a woman develops fully in a profession,
she is quite selfish or less of a woman, because she is
not very motherly.

andinas, mujeres de la Amazonía, líderes sociales
que a pesar que culturalmente no estén a favor,
por salir adelante por sus hijos y porque ellas
quieren un mundo mejor, asumen el reto y van
hacia adelante.
¿Qué debilidades deberían superar?
Los paradigmas propios. Más allá de los estereotipos
sociales y culturales que de hecho existen y con
los cuales tenemos que confrontar con políticas de
Estado, hay también una autolimitación.
¿Conservadoras, quizás?
Creo que hay cierto prejuicio de pensar que si una
mujer se desarrolla plenamente en una profesión
es como que muy egoísta o poco mujer porque no
es muy madre.
¿Nuestra sociedad muestra rasgos machistas?
Son estereotipos que tenemos que vencer poco a
poco. Quienes lo hemos hecho hace mucho tiempo
estamos convencidas de que es algo muy personal
y sí, hay algunas cosas que vienen de afuera, pero,
como todo, lo dejas pasar o lo incorporas.

Does our society exhibit machismo traits?
These are stereotypes that we must gradually
overcome. Those of us who have already done it have
been convinced for a long time that this is something
very personal and, yes, there are some external forces,
but, as with everything else, you either let it go by or
you make it a part of yourself.
