ATTENTION HARRISON RESIDENTS The Town of Harrison would like to make residents aware of the importance of recycling and the proper procedures that must be followed. All household garbage must be kept separate from recycled materials. All cardboard/newspapers must be tied or bundled. Please make sure that cardboard boxes are broken down and then tied with natural fiber rope. Boxes must be stored neatly and bundled together to prevent them from scattering on the street and sidewalk. If you have papers/mail this must be stored in either a trash can, a brown paper bag or a cardboard box and should be included with your recycling. Do not place any cardboard/paper in a plastic bag. Cardboard and paper must be kept separately from any type of plastic or co-mingled recyclables. All co-mingled recyclables must be stored in either a recycling container or a clear plastic bag. Co-mingled recyclables include glass food and beverage bottles, aluminum cans, metal food cans and plastic bottles. Do not store any recycled items in cardboard boxes and do not overfill your recycling container. Bulk pick up is scheduled for the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month for the North Side of Town and the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month for the South Side of Town. There will be no bulk pick-up on the 5th Wednesday of the month. Bulk items may be placed at the curb after 6pm on the evening before the scheduled pick-up. Do not place propane tanks, batteries or electronic waste (computers, TV’s, etc.) at the curb. Please call the DPW (973-268-2296) to schedule a pick-up for these items. Please use leaf bags for all leaves and contact the DPW for removal of leaves and tree branches. Do not mix these items with the regular garbage. Employees from the DPW and the Health Dept. will be monitoring the garbage to insure that residents are adhering to proper recycling procedures. Warnings and/or summonses will be issued to violators. El recogimiento del bulto esta programado para el primero (1) y tercero (3) miercoles del mes para la parte Norte de la Ciudad y el Segundo (2) y cuarto (4) miercoles del mes para la parte Sur de la Ciudad. No habrá ninguna recogida de bulto el quinto (5) miércoles del mes. Los artículos de bulto pueden ser colocados en el frente de su casa después 6:00 p.m. antes de la recogida prevista. No coloque tanques de propano, baterías o basura electrónica (computadoras, TV, etc.) en el frente de su casa. Por favor llame el DPW (973-268-2296) para programar una recogida para estos artículos. Por favor use las bolsas adecuadas para hojas y póngase en contacto con el DPW para el retiro de ramas de árbol y de las bolsas de hojas. No mezcle estos artículos con la basura regular. Los empleados del DPW y el departamento de Salud supervisarán la basura para asegurar que los residentes se adhieren a procedimientos de reciclaje apropiados. Boulevard - Monday through Saturday (including holidays) RECYCLABLES NEWSPAPERS/CARDBOARD Bundle and tie newspapers in bundles no higher than 12 inches, tied with ONLY natural fiber rope or string. MIXED PAPER All acceptable paper can be mixed and may be put out for collection in a trash can, brown paper bag, or corrugated box. NOT ACCEPTABLE MATERIAL: NO Carbon Paper NO Blue Prints NO Plastic Bags of Any Kind NO Waxed Milk Cartons NO Waxed Paper of Any Kind CO-MINGLED RECYCLABLES (please do not overfill your recycling container) Aluminum beverage cans, glass bottles and jars, acceptable plastic containers and household food cans be put out in one reusable container at the curb side for collection. Recycling containers can be obtained for $12 a piece at 600 Essex St., with two (2) proofs of residency (tax bill, water bill, utility) and driver’s license. Glass food and beverage and glass bottles ONLY (no other types of glass) Aluminum Beverage Cans, laundry detergent containers Household metal food cans (pet food cans too) Clear plastic soda bottles, plastic milk and water jugs No motor oil or anti-freeze bottles/or jugs No chemical, aerosol, oil or paint cans (EMPTY paint cans may be placed in with the regular trash) Full paint cans have to dry out, and then can be placed for pick up with regular garbage CHRISTMAS TREES - Can be put out with regular garbage. ENFORCEMENT – Both owners and tenants are liable for compliance with the recycling laws. Summonses will be issued for non-compliance, overflowing receptacles, scattered paper/cardboard, etc. CLEAN-OUTS AND WHITE GOODS CLEAN-OUTS – Generally bulky household goods; does NOT include construction debris, car parts, rocks, propane cans, bags of plaster, cement, etc. WHITE GOODS – Large appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, etc., and including large metal items, such as fencing, etc. BATTERIES/PROPANE TANKS/ELECTRONIC WASTE (computers, monitors, TVs, cell phones, etc) NO TIRES. To schedule a pick-up call 973-268-2296. All recyclables/clean-outs/white goods may be placed at the curb for removal in the specified containers or tied bundles after 6:00 P.M. on the day prior to the scheduled pick-up. Failure to adhere to these guidelines and the Ordinances of the Town will result in fines. Please note that the garbage men are in town by 3:00 A.M., so please put your items out the night before your scheduled pick-up. LEAF PICK-UP Leaf bags can be obtained from the DPW by calling 973-268-2296 starting October 1st ($3 for 10). All leaves must be put in leaf bags and then call DPW for pick. Leaves are NOT to be put in with the household trash or bulk garbage. GARBAGE / LITTER ENFORCEMENT Littering will no longer be tolerated! Cigarette butts are litter too! Owners/tenants are required to keep their sidewalks and curbs swept and clean. Tickets will be issued! Fines from $100 (minimum) to $1,000 (maximum)! We are serious about keeping our town litter-free and clean. Please do your part. The law requires that residential garbage be placed for curbside collection in water-tight receptacles with covers. You cannot place bags of any type (plastic, food-store, etc.) on the street -- it must be in a proper receptacle. Both owners and tenants are liable, and summonses will be issued.
