PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I saw this reflection in Bringing Home the Word published by Ligouri Publications and wanted to share it with you.
EVERLASTING SWEETNESS
“Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” John 20:19-31
One of the best things about Easter is the candy. Even more spectacular than
jelly beans are those crème-filled, fat-laden chocolate eggs. And some people
(though not me) claim a love of marshmallow chicks and bunnies.
I think we love holiday candy so much, in part, because it only comes around
once a year. Its rarity makes it special. The same could be said about the Apostle
Thomas. He’s the crème egg of the Bible – his story comes around only on the second Sunday of Easter, and it’s usually a favorite of Christians who take heart in believing without seeing. Thomas’ rarity makes him special.
But this Gospel story is about more than Thomas; it also reveals much about the
risen Jesus. First, Jesus moves through locked doors and walls to get to His beloved
disciples; His love knows no boundaries. Second, even in His resurrected body He
still has wounds. He knows what it’s like to be broken and hurt deeply. Third, He
speaks and breathes peace – not an easy, everything’s-going-to-be-fine peace, but a
hard-won peace that trusts in God despite suffering and fear.
Jesus does the same for us today. Our risen Lord can move beyond any spiritual
walls we’ve built or emotional doors of doubt we’ve tripled-locked. He can identify with our wounds and pain. He promises us a deep, hard-won peace. And, fortunately, Jesus comes around much more often than Thomas or chocolate-covered
crème eggs. Our risen Lord is with us always.

IHart Radio’s Visit
Do you listen to IHeart Radio 930 am? Besides the Easter
good news of Jesus’ resurrection, I-Heart Radio’s popular
host, Cy Kellet, is going to visit us on April 16 and 17 to promote this wonderful Catholic radio station.
I hope all of us will have the blessing of being able to meet
and to hear him speak at our Masses that weekend. Thanks
to Patti Sharpe, our OLPH I-Heart Radio ambassador, who
facilitated this very important visit of Mr. Kellet so that our
community will really be able to listen and benefit immensely from this great Catholic radio station. “We welcome you, Cy!”
We Owe It To You!
The Holy Week, Easter Triduum, and Easter Vigil are very
interesting events in the liturgical year. Their liturgies are
very challenging. Nevertheless, we were able to have beautiful celebrations. This is because of all of you who have
helped us in so many ways. We thank you for your helping
hand. Our one ultimate purpose: to serve God…regardless.
I know I have thanked you before in our bulletin last
Easter Sunday. But I believe “redundancy is our friend.”
I’d like to thank Fr. Pako for the beautiful Mass of the
Lord’s Supper. Thank you for your liturgical expertise that
helped us prepare for the celebrations. Thank you for serving our Hispanic community with Dn. Carlos in their services.
Thank you dear Hispanic Community leaders for everything
you’ve done. Thank you Efrain and Veronica Andrade and
our Hispanic choir. And to all our Hispanic Parishioners,
“muchisimas gracias por todo!”
Thank you Bishop Joe! Your presence is always a gift to
our community. Thank you Victor and Lulu Ceja and John
and Irma Saavedra. I cannot wait to see you both serving as
our ordained deacon couples!
Thank you Dn. Richard for emceeing for us. You have
really helped us to stay calm and find our way in our services. Thank you, Yolanda, for also joining your husband and
our community in our celebrations.
Thank you Dn. Carlos for baptizing our “new Catholics on
the block,” David Ayala, Kevin Cuba, Tina Corrales and
Julissa Molina and also for our Tenebrae, Holy Week and
Easter Triduum services. Thank you very much too, Betty,
for all the “behind-the-scenes” and logistics so that everything would turn out fine.
Thank you very much Theresa Nicholas for all the rehearsals with our elect, candidates, lectors, altar servers and
volunteers. For all the planning, coordinating with everyone
involved in the liturgy, and everything else. The list is endless. We don’t have a clue.
Thank you so very much, Fr. Mark and Julie Bosdachin,
for all the script and liturgical ideas. We are only reaping
the fruits of your hard work.

spent to rehearse and to sing for us. We loved “The Passion” and “Handel’s Messiah!” I always get goose bumps!
Thank you dear Altar Servers! Thank you also to the parents of these angels. They are so young and yet are already
great and shining examples of service, generosity and concern for the community.
Thank you our dear Captains, Eucharistic Ministers, lectors, ushers, and everyone else who have helped us prepare
for every service. Everything is easy because of you.
I am very sorry if I am not able to include all of you who
have helped us. There’s just an abundance of very wonderful, quiet, humble and helpful people in our community.
But God knows how much you’ve helped and I pray He will
shower you abundantly with blessings.

What’s the sense of all these things without you? You are
the reason. We are here because of you. And OLPH is still
here because of you. Thank you so very much for all your
support, your hard work and service, your loyalty, your attendance, your presence, your patience, understanding, and

Nicholas, Mary Rogers, all our volunteer catechists, parents
and sponsors and everyone else in the team who journeyed
with them, taught them the Catholic faith, and made so
much sacrifice of their time and energy. There is no way to

The Diaconate Formation Office will be hosting
an information meeting for all men who are interested in finding out more about becoming a
permanent deacon in the Archdiocese of Los
Angeles. Members of the Archdiocesan Diaconate Formation Office will be present to explain
the role of the deacon in the Church, to explain
the Diaconate Formation Program, and to answer any questions that participants might
have. Men must be between the ages of 30 and
60 years to enter the formation program. It is
important for men who are married to attend
with their wives.

MINISTERIO HISPANO
Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Vi esta reflexión en Bringing Home the Word publicada por Ligouri Publications y
quiero compartirla con ustedes.
DULZURA ETERNA
Una de las mejores cosas de Pascua son los dulces. Aún más espectaculares que las
habas de jalea son esos huevos de chocolate rellenos de crema, cargados de grasa. Y
algunas personas (aunque no yo) dicen que les gustan mucho los pollitos y conejitos
de malvavisco.
Creo que nos encantan mucho los dulces de días festivos, en parte, porque sólo
son alrededor de una vez al año. Su rareza que los hace especial. Lo mismo podría
decirse del Apóstol Santo Tomas. Que es el huevo de crema en la Biblia – su historia
llega en el segundo domingo de Pascua, y suele ser una de las favoritas de los
cristianos que toman de corazón en creer sin ver. La rareza de Tomas es lo que lo
hace especial.
Pero este evangelio es más que Tomas; también revela mucho acerca de Jesús
resucitado. En primer lugar, Jesús se mueve a través de puertas cerradas y paredes
para llegar a sus amados discípulos; su amor no conoce fronteras. En segundo lugar,
incluso en su cuerpo resucitado todavía tiene las heridas. Él sabe lo que es ser roto y
herido profundamente. En tercer lugar, habla y respira paz – no es fácil, todo va-a-serpaz y belleza, sino una paz ganada que confía en Dios a pesar del sufrimiento y
miedo.
Jesús hace lo mismo para nosotros hoy. Nuestro Señor resucitado puede ir más allá
de las paredes espirituales, que hemos construido o puertas emocionales de duda que
nos hemos bloqueado. Se puede identificar con nuestro dolor y heridas. Él nos
promete una paz profunda. Y, afortunadamente, Jesús viene a nuestro alrededor más
seguido que con Tomas o los huevos de crema cubiertos de chocolate. Nuestro Señor
resucitado está siempre con nosotros.

Eucharist. It is highly recommended that the young lady be enrolled in Confirmation.
