January 17, 2016 Page 2 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) Jesus Reveals His Glory Pastor’s Corner In this week’s readings as in other parts of the Bible, God compares His love for us to the passionate love between bride and groom. I think there is a simple reason to explain the purpose of this way of speaking: this kind of love becomes stronger with the absence of the beloved, or as the saying goes “absence makes the heart grow fonder”. When dealing with human beings, we are frequently so far away from God that He has to resort to this passionate love to emphasize the immortality of His love for us. This passionate love of God for us endures to this day. The sacraments are such that they use material things like water and wine to show us God’s love for us. The water of Baptism cleanses us and prepares us for the wedding feast of Christ. The wine of the Eucharist is transformed into the Savior’s blood to transform those who drink It into adoptive children. My congratulations and prayers to the Youth Group, which holds their first ever high school weekend retreat this weekend. Please keep them in your prayers, so that their encounter with Christ will bear much fruit. P. His being merciful is concretely demonstrated in his many actions throughout the history of salvation where his goodness prevails over punishment and destruction. In a special way the Psalms bring to the fore the grandeur of his merciful action: “He forgives all your iniquity, he heals all your diseases, he redeems your life from the pit, he crowns you with steadfast love and mercy” (Ps 103:3-4). In short, the mercy of God is not an abstract idea, but a concrete reality with which he reveals his love as of that of a father or a mother, moved to the very depths out of love for their child. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that this is a “visceral” love. It gushes forth from the depths naturally, full of tenderness and compassion, indulgence and mercy. Being one of the most venerated of all Roman martyrs, Saint Agnes was executed perhaps in 304, almost certainly in the early fourth century, during the persecution of Diocletian. Her name is mentioned in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer 1). January 20, St. Sebastian, a captain of the Pretorian Guard during the reign of Diocletian, he was sentenced to die by being pierced with arrows. Left for dead, he was rescued by St. Irene eventually healed only to be martyred again and finally killed by the blows of a club. This year’s topic was waste management Students virtual . present city design their solutions (using SimCity); via a a 1,500- word city description; a scale model; a project plan, and a presentation to judges at Regional Competitions. We want to congratulate our students and their teacher, Mrs. Salavarria who presented their design at this year Future City Competition that was held on January 16th at Florida International University. The PreK3 through 3rd grade classes were treated to a reading and presentation of the book, Ancient Earth Journal, The Early Cretaceous by one of the authors and illustrator, Juan Carlos Alonso and participated in many other activities as they learned about dinosaurs. We are proud to say that Mr. Alonso is a Saint Hugh Parent who illustrated and co-authored this amazing book which has been said to bring readers closer to prehistoric life than ever before. "Ancient Earth Journal, The Early Cretaceous" won the "2016 Outstanding Science Trade Book for Students K-12" from the National Science Teachers Association-Children's Book Council. We are thankful to him for sharing his talent and time with the children of Saint Hugh. Page 10 St. Hugh Segregation In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Pre-K 3 have been learning about his life and segregation. The children were seated in an imaginary bus, randomly at first, and then were separated by hair color—children with blond hair were made to sit in the back of the bus. The children discussed with their teacher, Mrs. Klynott, how they felt. Although a simple lesson, a very important one that they understood.
