March March 6, 2016 Page 2 Fourth Sunday in Lent (Cycle C) Celebrating God’s mercy Pastor’s Corner The parable of the prodigal son calls to our own conscience and invites us to confront ourselves seriously. We can start from an evident truth: we are all prodigal sons who have at one time—perhaps many times—left the Father’s house. A fault, a sin committed in a moment of weakness or thoughtlessness, is not the worst thing going on in our lives; rather, it is our permanent living far away from God. Even at this moment we may be going through a period of interior dryness, of spiritual indifference, of being far from God, even if we are physically present in the church which is God’s house. As in many family relationships, we may be living under the same roof, yet not be together in spirit or affection. Many are afraid to return to God maybe because they think that God cannot forgive them, or because they don’t feel strong enough to abandon the sinful life they live. The younger son was not happy far from his father. He may have lived under a spell for a while, but all he got from it was emptiness and unhappiness in his heart. Lent is the appropriate time for a sincere return to the Father’s house. Let’s not miss this opportunity so that we may feel the joy of forgiveness and enjoy the peace of the risen Christ in the coming celebration of Easter. I want to congratulate Fr. Damian on the 25th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. We thank God for his vocation and his dedication to others. On this special day, our prayers are with him. Congratulations! ¡Felicidades! Ad multos annos! P. Page 6 St. Hugh Saints this Week/Santos de la Semana March 7, Saints Perpetua and Felicity (believed to have died 203) are Christian martyrs of the 3rd century. Perpetua was a married noblewoman, said to have been 22 years old at the time of her death, and mother of an infant she was nursing. Felicity, a slave imprisoned with her and pregnant at the time, was martyred with her. They were put to death along with others at Carthage in the Roman province of Africa. The Passion of St. Perpetua, St. Felicitas, and their Companions is one of the oldest and most notable early Christian texts. It survives in both Latin and Greek forms, and purports to contain the actual prison diary of the young mother and martyr Perpetua. Scholars generally believe that it is authentic. Fourth Sunday in Lent Page 7 The Jubilee of Mercy El Jubileo de la Misericordia The Church is commissioned to announce the mercy of God, the beating heart of the Gospel, which in its own way must penetrate the heart and mind of every person. The Spouse of Christ must pattern her behavior after the Son of God who went out to everyone without exception…It is absolutely essential for the Church and for the credibility of her message that she herself live and testify to mercy. Her language and her gestures must transmit mercy, so as to touch the hearts of all people and inspire them once more to find the road that leads to the Father. Fourth Sunday in Lent Page 9 The students of the month for February were honored at the school Mass on February 19th. These students were recognized as embodying the Spirit of Saint Hugh by having displayed one or several of the attributes described in the acronym for Spirit. Service, Prayer, Integrity, Respect, Resilience, Intellect, and Trustworthiness. Congratulations to our February students of the month. We are very proud of them and wish them continued success. Black History Month In honor of Black History Month, St. Hugh School has been teaching our students about the African-Americans in history who have impacted our country. The PreK through 5th Grade students focused on subjects including inventors, musicians, poets, scientists, and more. Students were assigned a famous black American from the past or present and were asked to research information about them to complete an assignment. The results were amazing and the projects were put on display in the school hall for all to see. The lessons and projects provided students with an interactive and informative way for celebrating the important contributions African-Americans have made to our nation. Page 10 St. Hugh The seventh and eighth grade students celebrated the season of love and friendship with a Friendship Day Dance held on February 19th. The students had a great time as they enjoyed each other’s company and danced the night away. Teachers chaperoned the event and were delighted to see them having so much fun. Congratulations to the Girls Junior Varsity Basketball team for having completed the season undefeated. This remarkable team consists of students in the 4th, 5th and 6th grade. They had a tremendous season this year under the direction of their coach and our athletic director, Rick Pina. We are proud of them and their accomplishments. Every kid loves a primate, especially the Kindergarten students who had up close and personal encounters with them on their field trip to the Monkey Jungle last month. The children had a great time getting acquainted with gibbons, spider monkeys, turtles, and orangutans as they were able to get up close, feed and even touch them.
