When Christians gather for worship, we are coming to the table to
proclaim that the Lord is the maker and sustainer of life. We are coming
to the table to celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of Christ.
We are coming to the table to experience the power of the Holy Spirit.
As the worship team has been studying the Gospel of Luke in preparation
for Urbana, the table has become our symbol of worship—the place
of communion with the triune God and with one another.
Coming to the table in congregational worship is a family event.
Although we come from different denominations, backgrounds, and
ethnicities, in Christ we are a part of one body. We come together
with our preferences and perspectives but seek to learn from one
another—to share at the feast. Our worship with one another at
Urbana demonstrates that we are connected in Christ.
We come to the table because we are hungry to experience God.
We need to meet God in real ways, to experience repentance, healing,
and restoration. The table is a place where Jesus wants to meet with us
as we bring our worries and longings. Our desire is to create a worship
space that includes awe, celebration, reflection, lament, and joy.
We come to the table to embrace God’s mission in the world.
As we worship God in his fullness we will get a glimpse of his heart
for those who are hurting and lost. We will come to understand
what it means for us to accept the invitation of Jesus in his mission
to proclaim good news to the poor, demonstrate freedom for
oppressed, and proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor (Luke 4:1-9).
