Our Curriculum Overview Year 8 Summer Term English This term, pupils read the novels Boy in the Striped Pyjamas; To Kill a Mockingbird and The Curious Incident of a dog in the Night­time, to explore literary concepts, including point of view, character development, figurative language, setting, plot, mood, and tone. Pupils also practise analysing literature, making predictions, and supporting their thoughts with evidence from the text. It starts by introducing Turtle graphics, leading to the use of variables and For…EndFor loops. Simple programs using the Text window are used to introduce input, output and selection. Pupils will get used to these programming statements while having fun producing coloured graphics and making a simple screensaver. They will learn the importance of writing statements accurately, documenting their programs and finding out for themselves in a very visual way how different program statements work. Pupils will then end the term developing their 3D design skills using TinkerCad trough a series of tutorials. Geography Year 8 Geographers are studying population this term to address and consider questions about how and why our planet´s population is growing so quickly, how many people can the earth support and what are the consequences of such rapid change? History This term year 8 will be learning about the Black peoples of the Americas, from abolition to equality. We will be studying the development of the abolition movement and those involved in supporting it. We will be studying the different groups that showed opposition to slavery and why, as well as those who risked their lives to help their fellow slaves, culminating in the American Civil War. We will then examine the lives of free African Americans after their emancipation and the continued oppression they suffered both in America and around the world. We will also examine the development of the equal rights movement and those involved, culminating in a study of the extent to which equality is enjoyed by African Americans in the modern day. Physical Education Athletics: Pupils will be working on activities involving running jumping and throwing. They will develop specific techniques in a range of events. Striking and Fielding: Pupils will develop skills and tactical strategies within rounders and cricket. Net/Wall: Pupils will develop skills in Volleyball and Tennis Art Pupils will use the theme of Aboriginal Art to explore the use of colour, texture and pattern. Pupils will also study the work of artists who have used Aboriginal art as an influence and analyse how their work could influence their own. Pupils will then design, develop and make their own 3d sculpture inspired by their research found within Aboriginal culture. Music Pupils will be learning about Blues music. They will be studying all aspects of the music including geography, history and culture before forming their own Blues bands and writing their own Blues songs. They will develop their knowledge and skills in lyric writing, instrumentation, chord progression, structure and ensemble. French This term will begin with ‘food and drink’. The children will learn how to discuss what they like to eat and drink. Also they will be able to order a meal in a restaurant. Other topics will include understanding travel information, discussing travel plans and describing a person’s appearance. Grammatical points that will be covered will be: ● Irregular perfect tense verbs. ● Asking questions in the perfect tense. ● Using perfect tense of verbs with être. ● Using the expression il faut+ infinitive meaning ‘you should’ or ‘it is necessary’. As the grammar and vocabulary are beginning to get quite complex, children will be expected to complete regular homework pieces and consolidate newly learnt expressions, phrases and vocabulary independently at home. Homework Homework is detailed on a separate timetable for each specific class, which was sent home last term. Copies of this are available if required. Children should be responsible for recording and checking homework in their Homework Diaries, but we ask that parents please also check this on a weekly basis. Parents should sign the diary to confirm that they have seen any comments. Children should continue to read at home every night and record the books they have read.
