Welcome one and all to the 2015-­‐2016 school year-­‐ We are very excited to begin! As you enter the school this year, you will see a number of physical changes to our building. Walls were erected creating enough space for new classrooms. Teams of volunteers painted and cleaned to get things ready for students. Much of the painting was led by Colton Taylor who attends Glenwood Springs High School. Both this year and last, our school has benefitted from the service of boy scouts and their supportive families. The next project will be the installation of our playground equipment, which is scheduled for September 12th. Only adult volunteers are needed for this project so please mark your calendar if you can. We will need your strong arms and backs for this one. To all who volunteered this summer either painting, erecting walls, or keeping up the grounds over the summer, WE THANK YOU!
We also have a number of new staff members who are joining our team this year. They bring extensive experience, knowledge and purpose to our work. You can read their bios on our webpage at http://www.tworiverscs.org/about-­‐us/staff-­‐and-­‐faculty/
but, in summary, the teams are as follows:
K/1-­‐ Amy Spradlin and Marissa Mills are job sharing. Amy taught in RE-­‐2 and was also a Literacy Coach. She will teach literacy in the morning while Marissa will teach PBL in the afternoons. Marissa is bilingual and has taught elementary children in both RE-­‐1 and RE-­‐
2 Districts for many years. Ruth Herrera will continue to teach Math in Spanish and PBL in the afternoon. Joining the K/1 team are two assistant teachers who will work from 8-­‐
12-­‐ Sonia Roldan and Dieanna Swaggert. Both are experienced teachers and are bilingual.
2/3-­‐ Alana Houseman will continue to teach Literacy and PBL. Joining her is Ann Rockett. Ann is most recently coming from Sopris Elementary and has a strong background in STEM and second language teaching. Ann will also be working with ELL students.
Elvia Loya will teach Spanish to grades 2-­‐6 and Math in Spanish to grade 2. Elvia has a teaching degree from Mexico and taught there for several years. She has been living in Glenwood Springs for many years with her husband and children. Her son Brandon attends TRCS.
Our 4/5 team will continue to be Maestro Morgan and Maestra Z.
The Middle School Team has many players. Jaime Nims will be teaching grades 7 and 8 Humanities as well as Spanish to grades 7 and 8. Joe Puglis will be teaching middle school math as well as a Physics platform to each grade level ( one grade per trimester). Ben Canady will be teaching grade 6 Humanities as well as a Life Science platform to each grade level ( one per trimester). Rebecca Ruland will be teaching an Earth Science platform to each grade level ( one grade per trimester).
Annette Leach will also come each day to teach middle school math. Annette is a retired high school math teacher from Texas. Richard Malone coming to us most recently from Sopris Elementary will teach Movement/Outdoor Education. Mr. Malone has taught 3rd-­‐6th grades over the past 13 years while working with diverse cultures Richard’s children will attend TRCS as well. Special Education will be taught by Kendra Stucki who comes to us with 28 years of teaching experience in Colorado, most recently teaching at Aspen Community School.
Shelby will be moved from part time to full time custodian this year and Vanessa will stay as a front desk secretary. We will also add Miriam Fuentes, a graduate from Glenwood Springs who is currently enrolled in the teaching degree program at CMC to our administrative and teaching team. Miriam is bilingual. In July, teachers from grades 4-­‐8 attended a week-­‐ long training sponsored by the National Math and Science Initiative. The training was in Austin, Texas . This is a required training each summer for many districts in Texas and our team met and mingled with many southern educators. The consensus was that the training was worthwhile and provided our staff with quality ideas and lessons to use in the future.
On August 17th, we will begin meeting with students during pre assessment day. The purpose of this day is to allow teachers to work with small groups of students initially for a few hours. The time will include orientation, teambuilding and an assessment in either math or literacy. The assessment will help us understand where our students are in these core subjects and will help us create a plan for differentiation. Both subjects will be assessed during the first week of school but only one on the 17th. If your last name begins with the letters A-­‐M, your time to come is from 9-­‐11:30 on the 17th. If your last name begins with the letters N-­‐Z, your time to come is from 1-­‐3:30 on the 17th. These are short sessions. Please plan to have your child transported for that time period only. Welcome BBQ:
On the evening of the 17th from 5:30-­‐7:00, we will host a Back to School Night combined with a BBQ and a bake sale. Every meal is $5 or $20/family. We will have hamburgers and hotdogs, chips, and fruit. We will also have a cakewalk. It should be fun to welcome all our old and new families together for this our first meeting. As usual, we are expecting a large crowd, so we are asking that you please park by the Glenwood Springs Mall once our parking lot is full. We will host our BBQ outside so if possible, please also bring a lawn chair. Family Handbooks will be available in print to review and sign. All students and their families will need to read and sign the sections of the appendices requiring a signature. Information about parent volunteer opportunities, transportation sign up, as well as after school programming will be available. Your child’s teachers will also be present to chat with you.

Lunch will remain the same as last year for the first two weeks of school. We are currently exploring other options for a healthier menu offered to students on a regular basis. If you are interested in learning more about healthy lunch options, please let us know in the main office. August 18th will commence the first day of school. School will start at 8 and end at 3:15. Adriana Ayala-­‐Hire Business and Outreach Director ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ¡Bienvenidos sean todos al año escolar 2015-2016! ¡Estamos emocionados de empezar!
Usted se dará cuenta de los cambios físicos a nuestro edificio al llegar este año. Hay nuevas
paredes para crear suficiente espacio para nuevas aulas. Equipos de voluntarios pintaron y
limpiaron para tener todo listo para los estudiantes. La mayor parte de la pintura fue hecha
por un joven Boy Scout que se llama Colton Taylor. Este año y el anterior nuestra escuela se
ha beneficiado del servicio de Boy Scouts y de sus familias. Para todos los voluntarios de
este trabajo y para los que ayudaron a mantener el exterior del edificio durante el verano ¡SE
LO AGRADEZEMOS!
Tenemos miembros nuevos en el personal este año. El nuevo personal trae consigo
experiencia increíble, conocimiento y propósito a nuestro trabajo. Puede leer sus biografías

pero para repasar los equipos son los siguientes:

entrenadora de alfabetización. Ella enseñara alfabetización en las mañanas mientras Marissa

segundos idiomas. Ella también trabajará con estudiantes de ingles como segundo idioma
(ELL).
Elvia Loya enseñara español a los grados 2-6. Ella enseñara matemáticas en español al
segundo grado. Elvia tiene su grado de enseñanza de México y enseño por varios años. Ella
vive en Glenwood Springs desde hace años con su esposo e hijos. Su hijo, Brandon es
estudiante de TRCS .
4/5 Maestro Morgan y Maestra Z continuaran en sus puestos.
El equipo de secundaria tiene a varias personas. Jaime Nims enseñara Humanidades al
grado 7 y 8 al igual que español. Joe Puglis enseñara matemáticas y física para cada grado
de secundaria ( un grado por trimestre). Ben Canady enseñara humanidades al grado 6 y
también ciencias de vida a cada grado de secundaria (un grado pro trimestre). Annette Leach
vendrá diario a enseñar matemáticas a todos los grados de secundaria. Annette es una
maestra de matemáticas jubilada de Texas.
Movimiento/Educación al aire libre será enseñado por Richard Maline que viene de Sopris
Elementary y Educación Especial será enseñada pro Kendra Stucki quien más recientemente
dio clases en Aspen Community School.
En julio los maestros de 4-8 asistieron a un entrenamiento de una semana patrocinado por la
Iniciativa Nacional de Matemáticas y ciencias. El entrenamiento fue en Austin, Texas. Este es
un entrenamiento requerido cada verano para muchos distritos en Texas y nuestro equipo
conoció a muchos educadores del sur. El consenso fue que el entrenamiento valió la pena y
proveo a nuestro personal con ideas de calidad y lecciones para utilizar en el futuro.
El 7 de agosto, conoceremos a los estudiantes durante la pre evaluación. El propósito de
este día es para que los maestros trabajen con los estudiantes en grupos pequeños por unas
horas. Durante este día habrá una orientación, construcción de equipo y una evaluación en
matemáticas o en alfabetización. Esta evaluación nos ayudara a entender en donde se
encuentran nuestros estudiantes en estas materias básicas y nos ayudara a crear un plan de
diferenciación. Ambas materias serán evaluadas durante la primera semana de escuela pero
solo una el 17. Si el apellido de su hijo(a) empieza con la letra A-M entonces deberá
presentarse a la 9:30 y saldrá a las 11:30 el 17 de agosto. Si su apellido empieza con la letra
N-Z deberá presentarse a las 1pm y saldrá a las 3:30pm. Por favor haga planes para que su
hijo tenga transporte durante esos tiempos.
Tarde de Regreso a la Escuela
En la noche del 17 de agosto de las 5: 30-7: 00, vamos a realizar una Noche de Regreso a la
Escuela combinada con una barbacoa y una venta de pasteles. Cada comida es de $ 5 o $
20 / familia. Tendremos hamburguesas y perritos calientes, patatas fritas, y fruta. También
tendremos una caminata de la torta. Debe ser divertido dar la bienvenida a todas nuestras
familias nuevas y usadas para este nuestro primer encuentro. Como de costumbre, estamos
esperando una gran multitud, por lo que estamos pidiendo que por favor aparcar por el centro
comercial de Glenwood Springs una vez que nuestro estacionamiento está lleno. Tendremos
nuestra zona de barbacoa por lo que si es posible, también traen una silla de jardín.

Actualmente estamos explorando otras opciones para un menú más saludable que ofrece a
los estudiantes sobre una base regular. Si usted está interesado en aprender más acerca de
