Resulta difícil imaginar la ingente cantidad de camiones que
cruzan el mar en dirección a las Islas Baleares transportando
bebidas en las bodegas de los barcos. Millones de toneladas
que navegan cada año en los ferries de Trasmediterranea con
un único objetivo: calmar la sed de residentes y turistas.

sea towards the Balearic Islands carrying beverages in the
ships’ holds. Millions of tons sail the sea each year onboard
Trasmediterránea ferries with a sole aim: quenching the thirst
of both residents and visitors.

Damm, como siempre?
El diálogo es ficticio pero probable en cualquier bar de las Baleares. Un cliente habitual,
un camarero que conoce sus costumbres y
una marca de cerveza muy común en las islas… aunque no se embotelle allí.
Estrella Damm, como muchas otras bebidas,
desde Font Vella a Coca-Cola pasando por Leche Pascual o los vinos de Bodegas Palacios,
son de consumo común en el archipiélago,
adonde por supuesto llegan en barco. Pero
no en cualquiera. “Nosotros trabajamos con
Trasmediterranea desde 2001, básicamente
porque sabemos con absoluta certeza que
cargamos en Barcelona y al día siguiente
nuestra mercancía llega puntual a Palma de
Mallorca”, dice Ignacio Gallardo, director de
operaciones de Alfil Logistics, Operador Logístico Integral Multimodal del Grupo Damm.
Ellos despachan alrededor de 1.100 camiones
al año desde la capital catalana a la balear; y
de allí a Menorca, Ibiza y Formentera. 26.500
toneladas de bebida espumosa que viajan seguras en barriles, botellas o latas.
El agua mineral, de uso cotidiano para todas las edades, también tiene su sitio. Font
Vella embarca en las bodegas de los buques
de Trasmediterranea 2.300 camiones de
ACCIONA Logística transportando en torno a
45.000 toneladas anuales de botellas y garrafas. “Su punto de partida es Sant Hilari, próximo al Parque Natural del Montseny (Girona),
ya que debemos embotellar el agua a a pie
de manantial para que no pierda sus cualidades”, explica Alex Sabaté, Logistics Manager de
Aguas Font Vella y Lanjarón.
- Good afternoon, Joan.
- Hi, Miguel, how are you doing? Do you fancy
for a small bottle of Estrella Damm, as usual?
The conversation is fictitious, yet likely to
take place at any bar on the Balearic Islands.
A regular customer, a waiter who knows his
habits and a beer brand commonly found
on the islands, despite the fact of not being
bottled there.
Estrella Damm, like many other beverages
−from Font Vella to Coca-Cola, as well as Pascual Milk and the Bodegas Palacios wines−
are regularly consumed on the archipelago,
which they reach by ship. But not just any ship.
“We’ve been working with Trasmediterranea
since 2001, basically because we are absolutely certain that we load the goods in Barcelona
and the next day they reach Palma de Mallorca
on time,” says Ignacio Gallardo, Operations Director at Alfil Logistics, Grupo Damm’s Logistic
Integral Multimodal Operator.
They ship around 1,100 trucks a year from
Catalonia’s capital city bound to Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. A total of 26,500
tons of sparkling beverages travel safely in
barrels, bottles or cans.
Mineral water, a regular drink among people
of all ages, also has its own place. Font Vella
ships 2,300 trucks of ACCIONA Logística in
Trasmediterránea vessels’ holds carrying
around 45,000 tons of bottles and cylinders
a year. “Its departure point is Sant Hilari, close to Montseny Natural Park (Girona), since
we have to bottle the water just at the spring
so that it can keep its qualities”, explains Alex
Sabaté, Logistics Manager of Font Vella and
Lanjarón Waters.

Aunque el destino no solo son las islas. A
bordo, los buques ofrecen en bares y restaurantes una amplia oferta de bebidas e
incluso espacios especiales, como la terraza
del ferry Scandola, gracias a la colaboración
entre Damm y Trasmediterranea.
El transporte de bebidas ofrece algunas dificultades técnicas dado su peso y volumen, por
eso viaja en palets y envuelto por film plástico
que crea un bloque compacto para evitar cualquier tipo de movimiento. Sus peculiaridades
son otras, relacionadas con la estacionalidad.
“Desde Semana Santa hasta mediados de
septiembre, la rotación de nuestra mercadería
–que incluye las aguas minerales Veri y Fuente
Liviana– es muy alta”, comenta Ignacio Gallardo, “casi no pasa por los almacenes y el número de embarques aumenta de manera significativa. En esa época del año, Trasmediterranea
demuestra una gran flexibilidad para encontrar
siempre acomodo a nuestros camiones”.
La masiva afluencia de turistas del resto de
Europa a las Baleares provoca la otra alteración estival en el transporte hacia las islas:
“Como para ellos el agua se bebe con gas, tenemos que aumentar mucho nuestros envíos
de ese producto”, subraya Alex Sabaté.
Son pequeños secretos de un viaje de ida cargado de promesas, las de refrescar la boca y
apagar la sed en medio del Mediterráneo.

a wide variety of beverages and even some
special areas such as the Scandola ferry’s outside bar, thanks to the collaboration between
Damm and Trasmediterranea.
Carrying beverages poses some technical issues
due to its height and volume, that is why it travels on wrapped pallets in the form of compact
blocks to avoid any kind of movement or accident. However, this kind of transportation has
other peculiarities related to seasonality. “From
the Easter holidays until mid September the
turnover of our goods –which includes mineral
water under the brands Veri and Fuente Liviana– is very high,” says Ignacio Gallardo, “there is
almost no stop-by at the depots and the number of shipments increases significantly. At that
time of the year, Trasmediterranea shows great
flexibility to always accommodate our trucks.”
The massive affluence of European tourists
to the Balearic Islands is the other reason
why transport conditions to the islands are
altered during summer time: “Since they drink
sparkling water, we have to increase the shipment of that product considerably,” emphasises Alex Sabaté.
These are some little secrets of an outward trip
loaded with promises: refreshing the mouth
and quenching the thirst in the middle of the
Mediterranean.

se ofrece ya en zonas comunes de
ocho de las naves de Trasmediterranea

de Barcelona. “Este año se extenderá
al resto de la flota de pasaje, terminales marítimas de la compañía y zonas
de compra de billetes y embarque de
pasajeros”, señala José Luis Fernández Day, director de Marketing y
Servicio al Cliente de la compañía.

Easter holidays at high speed
Un año más, durante la Semana Santa
de 2014 Trasmediterranea reforzará las
conexiones entre Melilla y la Península
(Almería y Málaga) con Alta Velocidad, para
facilitar los desplazamientos en ese período
vacacional. Habrá 25.000 plazas disponibles
en ferries y Alta Velocidad en dichas líneas.
Las salidas extras con Alta Velocidad desde
Melilla son los días 11 y 16 de abril, a las
16:00 horas; y desde Málaga, los días 12 y
20 de abril, a las 9:00 y 19:00 horas.
One more year during the 2014 Easter
holidays, Trasmediterránea will reinforce its
high-speed services between Melilla and the
Peninsula (Almeria and Malaga) to facilitate
passengers’ travel during that period. There
will 25,000 available seats in the ferries and
high-speed vessels of such lines. Additional
departures on high-speed services from
Melilla are scheduled on April 11th and 16th
at 4:00 p.m.; and from Malaga on April 12th
and 20th, at 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Trasmediterranea participa en
dos proyectos de I+D –RETROFIT y GRIP– destinados a reducir
el consumo de combustible y las
emisiones en buques, en ambos
casos, cofinanciados por el Séptimo
Programa Marco de Investigación
de la Unión Europea.
El buque Jose Maria Entrecanales ha
sido elegido como caso de uso en RETROFIT para recoger datos (consumo
de fuel, emisiones, etc.) que sirvieron
para validar un simulador desarrollado en MARIN (Países Bajos).
En paralelo, fue instalado un sistema
de monitorización que incluye un
módulo de apoyo a la decisión para
asesorar sobre el trimado óptimo,
que garantiza un consumo mínimo a
una velocidad determinada.
GRIP se focaliza en la minimización del consumo de combustible,
mejorando la interacción entre
casco y hélice. En este proyecto se
estudian y desarrollan dispositivos
de ahorro de energía para disminuir
el consumo de combustible entre
un 5 y un 10 por ciento en casos
particulares, lo que lleva aparejado
una reducción de las emisiones de
gases contaminantes del mismo
orden de magnitud.
Trasmediterranea is involved in
two I+D projects –RETROFIT y
GRIP– aimed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions in existing ships, both of them financed
partly through the Seventh
Framework Programme of the
European Union.
The ship Jose Maria Entrecanales
has been chosen as a case study
in RETROFIT project, in order to
collect data (fuel consumption,
emissions and more issues) used
for validating a simulator developed in MARIN (Netherlands).
In parallel, a monitoring system,
including a decision support
module to help the selection of
optimum trim that guarantees
minimum fuel consumption at a
given speed.
GRIP is oriented to minimize fuel
consumption through the optimization of the interaction between
hull and propeller. In GRIP, several energy saving devices have
been studied and new ones have
been developed, expecting a reduction of fuel consumption by 5
and up to 10 per cent in particular
cases, entailing a dropping of the
emissions in the same order.
