“For everything there is a season, and a time
for every matter under heaven.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1
January is the first month of a new year filled with good purpose and intentions. Each start of the year
following the Christmas celebrations, we have an opportunity to renew our lives and start again.
January is usually the month where we set goals and objectives to achieve during the new year.
Regardless of our age or circumstances, not only is January the first month of the year or the beginning
of the calendar, it brings a new time for new opportunities and new dreams.
Time and life always goes its way even if we feel that we are the same, we are changing and the new time
is actually a blessed time, it is another phase, another opportunity God gives us to organize and plan our
future.
Planning certainly includes our spiritual life. It is true that we begin our liturgical year on the First
Sunday of Advent; it is also true that when we look at our resolutions for the New Year, we must include
the spiritual dimension of our life. As baptized individuals, we are called always to deepen and grow in
the knowledge and love of God and persevere serving God in all men.
”You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes, or figs from
thistles?" Matthew 7:16. It is our Christian responsibility to daily produce fruits of good works and to
understand that our time is a gift from God. He gives us the time and life to honor and worship Him with
our daily life.
I invite you then to plan and project 2014 from the spiritual point of view. I remind you that daily prayer
and meditation, constant reading of the Word of God, participation in religious and charitable activities,
and participation in the Eucharist, are to strengthen and augment our level of spiritual maturity, and
bring us closer to God, and therefore our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Here at Christ Church, we will have a time of planning our activities for the 2014 calendar, on Saturday
January 11, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. I invite you to participate on this day and/ or
communicate your ideas through email. Our goal is to determine the essential events and moments for
our community of faith and to carry them out through our mission in 2014.

“Hay un tiempo señalado para todo, y
hay un tiempo para cada suceso bajo el

Enero es el mes de los buenos propósitos e intenciones. Cada año nuevo, después de las c elebraciones
navideñas tenemos la oportunidad de renovar nuestras vidas y de comenzar de nuevo.
Enero es normalmente el mes donde nos fijamos metas y objetivos para alcanzar durante el año nuevo que
comienza. No importa nuestra edad o circunstancias Enero es no solo el primer mes de año o el inicio del
calendario; es nuevas oportunidades, nuevos sueños, tiempo nuevo.
El tiempo y la vida sigue siempre su camino y aunque sintamos que somos los mismos, el tiempo nuevo es en
realidad tiempo de bendición, es otro momento, una nueva oportunidad que Dios nos da para organizar y
planear nuestro futuro.
La planeación incluye ciertamente nuestra vida espiritual. Es cierto que comenzamos nuestro Año
Litúrgico el primer Domingo de Adviento, es también cierto que cuando miramos nuestros propósitos para
el nuevo ano, debemos incluir la dimensión espiritual. Como bautizados estamos siempre llamados a
profundizar y crecer en el conocimiento y amor de Dios y de perseverar sirviendo a Dios en todos los
hombres.
“
Por sus frutos los conoceréis. ¿Acaso se recogen uvas de los espinos, o higos de los abrojos?” Mateo
7,16. En nuestra condición cristiana debemos producir frutos diarios de buenas obras y entender que el
tiempo es regalo de Dios. Dios nos regala el tiempo y la vida para convertirnos a Él honrarle y adorarle
con nuestra manera de vivir.
Los invito entonces a planear y proyectar el 2014 desde el punto de vista espiritual. Les recuerdo que la
oración y meditación diaria, la lectura constante de la Palabra de Dios, la participación a las actividades
religiosas y caritativas fortalecen y acrecientan nuestro nivel de madurez espiritual y nos acercan más a
Dios y por consiguiente a nuestros hermanos.
En la Iglesia también tendremos un momento de planeación para nuestro calendario general de
actividades 2014, el Sábado 11 de Enero 2014 9:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. los invito a participar o a
comunicar a través de correo electrónico sus ideas. Nuestro objetivo es determinar los momentos
indispensables para nuestra comunidad y a través de ellos llevar a cabo nuestra misión como Comunidad
de Fe en el 2014.

ANNUAL PARISH MEETING
January 26th,
Following the 10:00 a.m. Eucharist
We will hold our Annual Parish Meeting on January 26th, following the 10:00 am Eucharist.
We will elect three new vestry members at that time. They will serve three year terms.
The outgoing members are Judith Burk, Frances Schumpert and Kevin Portz, and are not eligible for
re-election. The outgoing members serve as the nominating committee. Their nominations are:
Pat Crenshaw, Daniel Lyons and Daniel Pearson.

Section 14.10 To be eligible as a member of the Vestry, one must be at least eighteen (18) years of age,
a confirmed communicant in good standing of the Church in that Parish, and a financial contributor of

Also, all heads of ministries in the church please remember to send your reports in to Cheryl in the
office, as soon as possible, for inclusion in the Annual Parish Reports.
God of the harvest give us your grace to be so devoted to you and united to one another that we become
fruitful laborers in your harvest. Help us to build an excellent Christian education program. So guide us
with your Holy Spirit that we fill Christ Episcopal Church with your disciples. We pray in the name of the
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Merry Christmas to All,
It has been quite a year. Diana is still working for a mortgage company three days a week
and volunteering at the Dallas Arboretum one day a week. She also continues to sing in
the church choir and is chair of the stewardship committee. Christ Church finally called
a new rector in October allowing me to return to Ascension. However both the rector and
the assistant left Ascension, so I am full time there. It is like being back home, and is only
15 minutes from my house by bicycle. I also only have to preach in English.
In spite of the work we found time for two major trips and a minor one together and a third major one for me. We went to
Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca in Peru in April. There are dry stack stone walls still intact that where there when the
Spaniards arrived. We learned there are over three thousand types of potatoes and sampled quite a few. We spent a week
above 10,000 feet. The country is truly spectacular. In August we went to Scotland and Ireland. We visited the Isle of
Colonsay, the ancestral home of the McAfee’s in Scotland. My ancestors were driven off it in the early 1600’s, so we met no
relatives. It is mostly a resort now and somewhat difficult to reach. We spent more time in Scotland and enjoyed it more.
Each day we took a tour into the country side from either Edinburgh or Glasgow and spent a day exploring each city. The
Lochs are fantastic. The people in both countries were very friendly and polite. It was quite cool, but we were lucky enough to
have very little rain. And we missed the almost 100 degree heat in Dallas.
I’ve also found time to ride over 6,200 miles on my bicycle this year, including my spring trip to Mallorca and a fall trip to
the Davis Mountains in far West Texas. Diana went to the Davis Mountains with me but did not ride. The mountains of
west Texas are beautiful in a stark way. We went to the observatory for their night star show and watched 2 satellites
traveling through space, along with seeing lots of stars which are not visible in our light saturated area. In November I was
hit by a car from behind while riding my bike, but escaped with bruises and a mild concussion. Only the rear wheel on the
bike was damaged. I have only raced once this year and finished third in the 70+ age group.

Feliz Navidad para Todos,
Ha sido todo un año calmado. Diana todavía está
trabajando para una compañía de hipotecas tres días

Ella también sigue cantando en el coro de la iglesia y es presidente del comité
de mayordomía. Christ Church finalmente llamó un nuevo rector en octubre

OUTREACH
OUTREACH JANUARY 2014
I hope you all had a happy and blessed Christmas and that the New Year will bring you peace, joy and
good health.
I would like to publicly thank Emporium Pies at 314 N. Bishop Avenue who generously donated smoked
turkeys and delicious pies just before Thanksgiving which enabled us to give some of the less fortunate
people in our community a chance for a good Thanksgiving lunch. If you get the chance, please support
Megan Wilkes and her company by buying some of their delicious pies. Their website is

Our thanks also go to the PTA at John H Reagan Elementary School for the canned food drive that they
recently held. Ms. Guzman kindly asked Christ Church if we could distribute them to one of our charities
that we support. Kathy and I filled our vehicle to the top with hundreds of dollars worth of canned food
which we took to Oak Cliff Churches for Emergency Aid. What a wonderful effort by the PTA and
children.
All the toys that were placed in front of the altar by the children of Christ Church have been taken to
Austin Street Center where they will be distributed to the children of their clients. We have also t aken
many bags of clothing, bedding and toiletries to ASC to assist in their care of the patrons.
I will be contacting The Well Community in January to set some dates for the Thursday evening suppers.
If you haven’t volunteered yet, please consider it in 2014 as it is a valuable part of our Outreach in the
community.
At the Annual Meeting in January, I will present some figures as to how much we as a congregation have
contributed to our charities during 2013. Whatever amounts these may be, it is not as important as the
way we at Christ Church are showing God’s love through our community activities. However much or little
we give, the prayers that we offer up are as important as the physical actions. Please make our charities
part of your daily prayers, both for the participants and the staff who care for them.

Espero que todos hayan tenido una Navidad feliz y bendecida y que el Año Nuevo les traiga paz, alegría y
buena salud.
Me gustaría dar las gracias públicamente al Emporium Pies en 314 de la Avenida Obispo. Quien

A THANK YOU TO OUR NEIGHBORS
Last year, not long after moving to Oak Cliff, we found our way to THE EMPORIUM, on Bishop Avenue in
the Bishop Arts District. We immediately fell in love with their pies (they only sell pies, tea and
coffee…and the occasional scoop of ice cream) and it became a regular destination when we needed
something sweet.
We met Megan Wilkes the owner almost immediately, and in conversation she discovered I was with
Christ Church. She and her family had always provided meals to neighbors in their home town during the
holidays and wanted to know if there was a way they could get involved in Oak Cliff. So last year I
directed her and her sister to Cliff Temple Baptist Church to help them cook and deliver meals.
This year she contacted us directly and wanted to help out parishioners and neighbors of Christ Church.
Turkeys and pies (a special treat) were provided to our outreach members for distribution the evening
before Thanksgiving by Megan and her staff; and we couldn’t have been more grateful for their
generosity.
So if you are looking for a wonderful sweet treat for yourself, or a pie to bring to a friend or family
member don’t forget our friends at THE EMPORIUM. We are blessed to have them as neighbors and as
friends….and the pies are DELICIOUS!
Let them know how happy we are to have them in our neighborhood.

UN AGRADECIMIENTO A NUESTROS VECINOS
El año pasado, poco después de mudarnos a Oak Cliff, encontramos nuestro camino hacia El Emporio, en la
calle Bishop, en el Distrito de las Artes. Inmediatamente nos enamoramos de sus pasteles (ellos sólo
venden pasteles, té y café... y la primicia ocasional de helado) y se convirtió en un destino habitual cuando
necesitamos algo dulce.
Conocimos a Megan Wilkes la dueña casi de inmediato, y en la conversación ella descubrió que yo estaba
con la Iglesia Cristo. Ella y su familia siempre habían proporcionado comida a los vecinos de su ciudad
natal durante las vacaciones y quería saber si había una manera de que pudieran participar en Oak Cliff.
Así que el año pasado dirigí a ella y a su hermana hacia Cliff Temple Iglesia bautista para ayudar a
cocinar y entregar comidas.

Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle
January 25th
Paul, or Saul as he was known until he became a Christian, was a Roman citizen, born at Tarsus, in
present-day Turkey. He was brought up as an orthodox Jew, studying in Jerusalem for a time under
Gamaliel, the most famous rabbi of the day. Describing himself, he said, “I am an Israelite, a descendant
of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin” (Romans 11:1).
A few years after the death of Jesus, Saul came in contact with the new Christian movement, and
became one of the most fanatical of those who were determined to stamp out this “dangerous heresy.”
Saul witnessed the stoning of Stephen. He was on the way to Damascus to lead in further persecution of
the Christians when his dramatic conversion took place.
From that day, Paul devoted his life totally to Christ, and especially to the conversion of Gentiles. The
Acts of the Apostles describes the courage and determination with which he planted Christian
congregations over a large area of the land bordering the eastern Mediterranean.
His letters, the earliest of Christian writings, reveal him as the greatest of the interpreters of Christ’s
mind, and as the founder of Christian theology. He writes, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no
longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son
of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20).
Paul describes himself as small and insignificant in appearance: “His letters are weighty and strong,” it
was said of him, “but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account” (2 Corinthians 10:10). He
writes of having a disability which he had prayed God to remove from him, and quotes the Lord’s reply,
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, Paul went on to
say, “I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me” ( 2
Corinthians 12:9).
Paul is believed to have been martyred at Rome in the year 64 under Nero.
O God, by the preaching of your apostle Paul you have caused the light of the Gospel to shine throughout
the world: Grant, we pray, that we, having his wonderful conversion in remembrance, may show ourselves
thankful to you by following his holy teaching; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with
you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

La Conversión de San Pablo Apóstol
Enero 25
Pablo, o Saulo como era conocido antes de su conversión, era un ciudadano romano,
nacido en Tarso, en lo que hoy es Turquía. Se educó como judío ortodoxo, estudiando
durante cierto tiempo en la escuela de Gamaliel en Jerusalén, el rabino más famoso
de aquel tiempo. En la carta a los romanos se describe de esta manera:
«Soy israelita, del linaje de Abrahán, de la tribu de Benjamín» (Romanos 11:1).

Desde ese día, Pablo se entregó totalmente a Cristo y especialmente a la conversión de los gentiles. Los
Hechos de los Apóstoles describen el ánimo y la determinación con que fundaba congregaciones cristianas
por una extensión enorme, bordeando la costa mediterránea oriental.
En las cartas, los documentos cristianos más antiguos, se manifiesta como el mayor intérprete del
pensamiento de Cristo y fundador de la teología cristiana. En la carta a los Gálatas escribe: “He sido
crucificado con Cristo, y ahora no vivo yo, es Cristo quien vive en mí. Todo lo que vivo en lo humano lo vivo
con la fe en el Hijo de Dios, que me amó y se entregó por mí.” (Gálatas 2:20).
Pablo se describe de apariencia pequeña e insignificante, se decía de él que “Las cartas son duras y
fuertes, dicen algunos, pero tiene poca presencia y es un pobre orador.” (2 Corintios 10:10). Escribe que
le había pedido a Dios le quitara una incapacidad física y el Señor le respondió: “Te basta mi gracia; mi
mayor fuerza se manifiesta en la debilidad.” Por lo tanto, continúa Pablo, “Mejor, pues, me preciaré de
mis debilidades, para que me cubra la fuerza de Cristo.” (2 Corintios 12:9).
Se cree que Pablo murió mártir en Roma el año 64 bajo la persecución de Nerón.
Oh Dios, que por la predicación del apóstol Pablo hiciste que la luz del Evangelio iluminara en todo el
mundo, te rogamos nos concedas que, recordando su conversión, te manifestemos nuestro agradecimiento
siguiendo su santo ejemplo; por Jesucristo nuestro Señor, que vive y reina contigo en la unidad del

With the weekend's ice-storm, we are reminded how important shelter can be.
A homeless woman died of exposure Saturday night, alone and cold under a bridge. Countless others
spent sleepless nights, trying to stay warm.
At The Second Chance Cafe, meal service continued, with Stewpot employees staying in nearby hotels to
be able to get to work to serve this fragile population. Our staff gave away every coat we had on hand,
and passed out countless hand/foot warmers, blankets and socks. We did what we could, but there is
much more to do.
It's the time of year when we need to ask for your financial support, though many of you have given so
much already in time and talent. Every contribution makes a difference, and allows us to continue to
meet the known and emerging needs of our most vulnerable.

Con el hielo y la tormenta del fin de semana, se nos recuerda cómo puede ser importante un refugio. Una
mujer sin hogar murió de frío el sábado por la noche, solo y frío debajo de un puente. Muchos otros
pasaron noches sin dormir, tratando de mantenerse caliente.
En el segundo Chance, Café, se sirve comida de continuó, con los empleados de Stewpot se alojaban en
los hoteles más cercanos para poder ir a trabajar para atender a esta población frágil. Nuestro personal
regalaba cada capa que teníamos a la mano, e incontables calentadores de la mano / del pie, mantas y
calcetines. Hicimos lo que pudimos, pero hay mucho más por hacer.

Gracious God of all seasons – we thank THEE for another year of CHURCH and VESTRY activities. For
FRIENDSHIP and for the GROWTH that comes to flowers and crops from the sun, rain and rich soil.
May growth come to our minds and hearts as we go on our ways for holidays, vacations and new church
endeavors.
Do not let us stay the same size all our lives. We do not ask for an easy path, we only ask that we may
have the courage and wisdom to live it well, and play our part.
In our weakness give us strength, in our sorrow give us COMFORT, and in our decisions give us Divine
GUIDANCE.
So may we come to the end of this year determined to be a better vestry member or parishioner next
year.
Bless our church family and each family represented here today, we pray in Christ’s name. AMEN.

Misericordioso Dios de todas las temporadas - Te damos gracias por otro año de actividades de la iglesia
y Vestry. Por la amistad y por el crecimiento de flores y cultivos por sol, por la lluvia y el suelo rico.
Que el crecimiento venga a nuestras mentes y corazones a medida que avanzamos en nuestros caminos
para vacaciones, la Navidad y los nuevos esfuerzos de la iglesia.
No nos dejes pasar el mismo tamaño toda nuestra vida. Nosotros no pedimos un camino fácil, sólo
pedimos que podamos tener el coraje y la sabiduría para vivir bien, y poner de nuestra parte.
En nuestra debilidad danos fuerza, en nuestro dolor danos consuelo, y en nuestras decisiones danos la
guía divina.
Así que podemos llegar a la final de este año decidido a ser un mejor miembro de la junta parroquial
(Vestry) o feligrés el próximo año.

Christ Church Follow Up Repair Projects
Greetings Christ Church Congregation and Vestry,
I wanted to take a moment and update everyone at Christ Church of our progress regarding our flooring
project and a couple of other projects that are being performed as improvements for Christ Church.
We have been in contact with Mooring Company and we currently have a scheduled meeting with several
Mooring Representatives for January 6th at 4:00 pm to finalize the contract for our flooring abatement
and reconstruction process. We hope to have this project completed within the month of January 2014
if all goes to plan. With this said, I would like to make a request to all congregation members of Christ
Church to take part in our preparation process for the flooring repair. We are responsible for moving all
possessions located in each room or hallway that will be repaired prior to date of initiation. We will need
to relocate any belongings to a temporary location where we can access any item needed throughout the
construction process. We currently don’t have a definite date for this process, but I encourage everyone
to be attentive for the scheduled date to help facilitate the preparation for this project. In addition we
are also working on a lighting project. It is our intent to have all light fixtures primarily exterior
repaired and in good working order. This will certainly help with the appearance of Christ Church and
hopefully deter any unwanted activity around our church. The third and final project is the installation
of a surveillance system at Christ Church. It is our intent to setup various cameras throughout the
premises to serve as protection and determent of any criminal activity. In the past we had several
incidents where we have had unknown members wondering our facility without reason. We certainly hope
that these improvements would be a great incentive to our Church and congregation. We will certainly
appreciate everyone’s understanding and contribution to these projects. In addition we would like to
express, “Thanks to God” for the blessings that we have received as to donations and contributions for
these projects.

Saludos Christ Church Congregación y la Junta Parroquial ,
Quería tomar un momento y actualizar a todos en la Iglesia Christ Church de nuestro progreso con
respecto a nuestro proyecto de pisos y un par de otros proyectos que se están realizando mejoras para la
iglesia Christ Church. Hemos estado en contacto con Mooring Company y actualmente programada una
reunión con varios representantes de Mooring Company para el 6 de Enero a las 4:00 pm a la
formalización del contrato para nuestro proceso de reducción de suelos y la reconstrucción. Esperamos
tener este proyecto completado en el mes de Enero 2014 , si todo va según lo previsto . Dicho esto , me
gustaría hacer una petición a todos los miembros de la congregación de la Iglesia de Cristo a participar
en nuestro proceso de preparación para la reparación de pisos. Somos responsables de mover todos los
bienes ubicados en cada habitación o pasillo que va a ser reparado antes de la fecha de su iniciación .
Tendremos que trasladar las pertenencias a una ubicación temporal en el que podemos acceder a cualquier
elemento necesario durante el proceso de construcción. En este momento no tenemos una fecha
definitiva para este proceso, pero animamos a todos a estar atentos a la fecha prevista para ayudar a
facilitar la preparación de este proyecto. Además , también estamos trabajando en un proyecto de
iluminación . Es nuestra intención que todos los artefactos de iluminación principalmente exteriors que
esten reparadas y en buen estado de funcionamiento . Esto sin duda ayudará con la aparición de la iglesia
de Cristo y es de esperar disuadir a cualquier actividad no deseada alrededor de nuestra iglesia. El
tercer y último proyecto es la instalación de un sistema de vigilancia en Christ Church. Es nuestra
intención de configurar varias cámaras en todas las instalaciones para servir como protección y
deterioramiento de cualquier actividad criminal. En el pasado hemos tenido varios incidentes en los que
hemos tenido a personas desconocidos navegando nuestras instalaciones sin razón. Por cierto, esperamos

Acolyte Festival at St. Matthew's January 11
There will be an acolyte Festival on Saturday, January 11, 2014 from 9:00-2:30 for acolytes and their
acolyte Directors and Sponsors. Don't forget your vestments! We will begin with a Festal Eucharist
with Bishop Lambert, where we will all process. Then we will go on to activities and workshops designed
for those who serve in this special ministry. There is a delicious lunch!
The $10. cost will be underwritten by the youth fund. We will meet at Christ Church at 8:30 to go over
to the Cathedral. Right now, the schedule looks like this:

Bishop's Ball January 25
Sock Hop at Stanton High
The Bishop's Ball for all youth in grades 9-12, will be Saturday January 25 at St. Matthew's Cathedral.
Admission is two cans of food for the St. Matthew's food pantry. This ball will honor Bishop Stanton
with the theme Sock Hop at Stanton High. This will be Bishop's Stanton last official Ball. He was barely
into his teens at the end of the 1950s but this will be a fun way to celebrate his ministry!
We will meet at Christ Church at 6:00, car pool to St. Matthew's, and return by 10:00.

Sock Hop en Stanton
Gala del Obispo para todos los jóvenes de los grados 9 a 12, será el sábado 25 de enero a la
Catedral de San Mateo. La admisión es de dos latas de comida para la despensa de alimentos de
San Mateo. Esta Gala honrará Obispo Stanton con el tema Sock Hop en Stanton alta. Esta será
Stanton la última gala oficial del Obispo. Fue apenas en su adolescencia a finales de la década de
1950, pero esta será una forma divertida de celebrar su ministerio!
