Insightful reviews j: I think the last time I read this (when I was about 10), I stopped when I got to the end of the movie's plot, which is about halfway through. That makes sense, because all the thematic stuff is in part two, and it's fascinating and fairly complex, and I think I would have found it boring and confusing as a fifth grader, because I don't know if that's quite the right time for a deconstruction of the hero myth and a fable about the perils of power and leadership. But... that's all really good stuff, and served in an inventive fantasy wrapper. There are a lot of good bits that didn't make it to the screen (at least in the first movie -- my vague memories of the sequel include some of the second-half stuff, but I was disgusted by that one in the theater in 199X and I'm not about to watch it again (though my wife might want to, since she had a huge crush on Jonathan Brandis (RIP))). I like the giant spider that is actually made up of a mass of swarming flies. Or the forest that sprouts up every day, only to crumble each night into a multicolored desert. Or the trippy ending that involves a journey inside a mystical ouroboros. The movie also lacks the book's often stilted translation (the Childlike Empress's nickname is "the Golden-eyed Commander of Wishes," which sounds like a menu item at a Chinese restaurant). The movie is actually an excellent adaptation of the first half, except for a bit of condensing and switching things up to provide more action sequences (Gmork is even more of an afterthought on the page, and pretty much there simply to deliver confusing exposition that I don't understand, and not even a lame action sequence or death-by-falling-on-a-ten-year-old). There are mild changes -- like Atreyu has green skin but is still pretty enough to sexually confuse young children <--- first crush!) -- but some things are improved too. Like Bastian isn't quite such a fat little turd. Oh right: because the book is kind of dated too. Like there's a lot of fat-shaming: Bastian is repeatedly described as weak, timid, and cowardly... and fat. He doesn't even want to come to Fantasia Fantastica at first because he is scared the Childlike Empress will take one look at his portly frame and decide she doesn't need a stupid new name after all. I mean, really. Moonchild? Book-Bastian is so hatable. Which is fine, in the second half, because he's supposed to be, kind of (conceptual spoiler alert!). But I also hated him in the first half, for being so whiny and reluctant to embrace the adventure. He just sits there, reading! What a NERD. Robyn: If you saw the movie as a child, and you're considering reading this book, do yourself a big favor. Take your memories of the movie, put them on some shelf in the back of your mind, and lock them away for the time being. It's not that the book and movie are incompatible, but they are certainly different. Judging by the other reviews, lots of people seem to have a hard time judging the book on it's own merits, because the film made such an impression. This is such a shame; I think it's a crime to declare undying allegiance to one or the other. You aren't going to hurt the movie's feelings if you happen to read the book and like it as much, more, or just in a different way than you enjoyed the film. The fact is, the focus in the book is different than that of the movie; the movie was about adventure and fun and those great old Jim Henson puppets. It was an epic quest with an engaging hero, and somewhere in there was also a story about a little boy growing up. The book, however, is primarily a coming of age story, wrapped in layers of strange and haunting symbolism and surreal dream logic. It's enigmatic and mysterious, inviting the reader to read between the lines and look at the way Fantastica itself mirrors Bastian's own psyche. Yes, the movie is much funner, and more immediately engaging, but the book has a depth that the movie lacks. This doesn't mean one is better than the other, any more than chocolate ice cream is definitively better than strawberry. They're different flavors, and I love them each for what they are. The book has a very specific blend of fantasy, sort of a mix of Frank Baum and the Brothers Grimm, and while Tolkien's influence is present, it's in a much lesser extent than that of most fantasy you see from the time period. No, the big influence here, more than anything else, seems to be folk tales and dreams. The blending of these influences is unique and very enjoyable. But the place where the book really shines is in the occasionally haunting and very odd sequences where Bastian begins to question why he has come to Fantastica, and if there's any reason at all that he shouldn't just stay forever. This leads to a surprisingly poignant quest of self-discovery. Yes, Bastian learns about becoming more independent, about responsibility and all the other usual "growing up" morals, but there' are many other layers beneath that. Bastion is doing more than just coming of age in this novel; within the dense symbolic plot, he's learning to forgive a depressive, absentee father who has, unwittingly inflicted some deep psychological scars. Not only to forgive him, but to take upon himself the adult role of helping his father to heal, to become a father again. Please, try to judge this book on it's own merits, the movie is wonderful, I love it, but don't let it get in the way of a really good reading experience. Kathryn: I grew up staring at the motion picture of The Neverending Story. i will not let you know what number instances i have watched it, and nonetheless watch it today. it is my convenience movie. i did not understand it used to be a publication until eventually a number of months ago, and because it's one among my favourite movies, I needed to learn the ebook once possible. much more occurs within the publication than within the movie, of course. we are taken on an epic, magnificent trip of Bastian and the land of Fantastica. i used to be shocked on the pure, genuine mind's eye within the book, and what sort of longer the tale truly maintains from the place the motion picture ends. there's rather a lot to like in regards to the tale of Bastian and his time within the Neverending Story, or even although lots of people may possibly imagine it's only a tender grownup book, there is, surprisingly, a few grownup consider to it. i believe the general message is great, too. i feel it is a learn for nearly a person at any age. i am blissful I took the time to learn it and study extra approximately what encouraged the movie. it's a bit weird, yet there are numerous adjustments among the two, and that i imagine will probably be tricky for me now to narrate the two. i believe such a lot definitely, my favourite elements of the booklet the place the 1st part the place Bastian is within the attic, interpreting approximately Fantastica and Atreyu trying to find the treatment for the Childlike Empress. i do not contemplate any of what I simply instructed you a spoiler, mostly simply because i am convinced we now have all noticeable the movie, yet that's simply the precis of 1/2 the book. I additionally cherished the half approximately (view spoiler)[ different coloured hills with the Many-colored Death. (hide spoiler)]This is a needs to learn for somebody who enjoyed the movie. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> Roya: Like such a lot people, I enjoyed this motion picture whilst i used to be younger. i have obvious it quite a few instances and i am convinced it was once my favorite at a few point. Up until eventually lately I had thoroughly forgotten that it used to be in accordance with a book. Curious to work out how exact it used to be to the movie, I extra it to my "to-read" shelf within the hopes that i might take on it in the subsequent decade. Fortunately, it did not take so long as i assumed to do this. i've got my pal Tanya to thank for that, when you consider that she instructed doing a blood brother learn for it. you could learn her evaluation here. The motion picture relies at the book, but if I say based, I suggest very loosely-based. it is rudimentary compared to the book. There are elements of Fantastica that have been by no means explored and such a lot of issues that fanatics of the motion picture by myself won't ever be aware of about! whilst I reached the 47% mark within the ebook is whilst the motion picture used to be approximately done. It then skipped to the finishing leaving all motion picture buffs ignorant of the natural awesomeness that was once Michael Ende. i was a major fan of the movie, yet now i am not sure. i believe like they dumbed issues right down to objective a much less mature audience. After interpreting the book, the motion picture simply turns out naked and fades in comparison.Looking back, The Neverending tale does not consider like one book, yet two. There’s a different department stylistically conversing among the 1st and moment half. the 1st 1/2 the ebook is blameless and benign; the second one part is darkish and melancholic. in lots of methods they really supplement each one other. The first 1/2 the publication is kind of according to saving Fantastica from the continual enlargement of The Nothing, which swallows up every little thing in its path. The Childlike Empress is unwell and this has taken a toll on Fantastica. Everyone's lives and Fantastica's very life depend upon hers. with no her, lifestyles is impossible. No health practitioner can healing her, yet there is anyone who can locate the cure. The Childlike Empress chooses Atreyu, a tender boy from the Greenskin tribe, to head on a quest to discover the reason for her sickness and its cure. It seems that the remedy isn't really in Fantastica at all, yet in a human keen adequate to think that the sort of position exists. This human specifically is Bastian Balthazar Bux, a boy with mind's eye in spades who occurs to be studying The Neverending tale in his school's attic. that is right, it is a ebook inside of a book. phrases can't convey how a lot my brain adores this kind of thing. The moment part is way extra brooding than the first, yet i feel that this basically provides to its magnificence. It’s extra enticing and exhibits one other aspect of Ende’s notable talent. Bastian's character printed itself a bit greater than i'd have liked. maybe it had anything to do together with his total prickish behaviour. or even it was once simply because he was once a megalomaniac. both way, i did not like it. Fortunately, the booklet did not finish leaving me with a jerk of a protagonist. the nature improvement usually is flawless. One half that truly resonated with me used to be the inscription at the again of Auryn. Or to be extra precise, the dialogue Bastian and Grograman had approximately it. "What do you believe it means?" he asked. "'DO WHAT YOU WISH.' That needs to suggest i will do something i think like. do not you think that so?"All immediately Grograman's face seemed alarmingly grave, and his eyes glowed."No," he acknowledged in his deep, rumbling voice. "It implies that you need to do what you actually and really want. And not anything is extra difficult." There's additionally one other passage that i discovered totally hilarious and cannot face up to putting here... Hykrion, Hysbald, and Hydorn, with whom Bastian may gladly have chatted or performed games, have been nearly as good as useless. within the private cellar of the Ivory Tower they'd stumbled on wine. There they sat day and night, drinking, taking part in dice, bellowing foolish songs, or quarrelling, and as frequently as no longer attacking each other with their swords.Sometimes they staggered up and down the excessive Street, molesting the fairies, elves, and different woman denizens of the Tower."What do you expect, sire?" they stated whilst Bastian stumbled on fault with them. "You needs to provide us anything to do." The e-book did have a number of different comedic triumphs, yet this was once most likely my favourite.Overall, I completely loved this book. i feel it truly is secure to assert that this can be one of many books that is actually redefined my outlook at the delusion genre. It’s on my “all-time favourite” shelf now, the place it revels in all of its glory. i am contemplating rereading it a number of extra occasions over the process this lifetime, yet for now i have to revert to completing off the 20+ books on my bookshelf. There are just too many books and never sufficient time to learn them all. so much of them usually are not even that great, yet occasionally you return throughout a gem and if you happen to do you always remember it. The Neverending tale suits this description perfectly.Artwork by means of Mauro Mazzara ?Lynn?: 3.5 starsI imagine I loved this extra whilst i used to be younger. this can be a superbly written e-book and that i could not positioned it down( I learn such a lot of it on the medical professionals office) , yet whatever did not consider right. I hate to assert it yet i believe I outgrew this book. Which saddens me simply because I had such a lot of nice thoughts of me examining this ebook within the attic like Bastian did. I used to snatch a few blankets and pillows and make myself a bit citadel and wander off within the pages. do not get me wrong, I nonetheless love this book, yet i feel the thirteen year previous me enjoyed it extra again then. AAAND THIS!Gmork nonetheless scares me. O.o Even final evening whilst I learn his scene I had goosebumps.THOSE EYES!!!!!
