Zwaluw® Backer Rod
PE or PU foam rod for joints sealing
Please make sure that the diameter of the Zwaluw Backer Rod is 50%
bigger than the gap between the two building substrates. If the joint
width is 20 mm the diameter of the Zwaluw Backer Rod
should be Ø 30 mm.

Zwaluw Backer Rod is a round open- (polyurethane) or closed-cell
(polyethylene) foam rod used to fill joints between building materials to
make sure the joint sealant will reach its correct dimension in width and
depth. Zwaluw Backer Rod can be delivered in various diameters, Ø 6
till 50 mm.

Because of the closed cells the PE Foam will give more support to the
sealant and is therefore most suitable for joints that will be exposed to
mechanical- or water pressure.
A disadvantage of PE Foam can be the possibility enclosures of air
bubbles between the sealant and the foam. These air bubbles can
expand during curing of the sealant by radiation from the sun. The
open-cell PU Foam doesn’t have this problem and is therefore the most
suitable for joints that are not exposed to mechanical- or water pressure
like joints in Façades etc. Moreover, damaging of the closed cells from
PE Foam during application can release a propellant from these cells,
resulting in air bubbles on the sealant surface. For a complete overview

Avoids three-sided adhesion of sealants

Zwaluw Backer Rod can be used in construction and expansion joints to
achieve the right joint-dimensions and to prevent a three-sided
adhesion of the sealant.
Important:
Zwaluw Backer Rod must be used in the construction and expansion
joint to achieve the correct joint dimension and to prevent a three-sided
adhesion of the sealant. If the depth of the joint is not sufficient enough
to apply both Zwaluw Backer Rod and Zwaluw Sealant a Zwaluw Break
Tape should be used instead of the Backer Rod. The Zwaluw Break
Tape also prevents a three-sided adhesion of the Zwaluw Sealant.
Make sure that the width of the joint is in correspondence with the
movement capability of the Zwaluw Sealant. How to calculate a correct

proper recommendation.
The joint sealant depth can be calculated by using the following
formulation: Joint Depth = (Joint Width divided / 3) + 6.
Before using the Zwaluw Backer Rod surfaces must be clean, dry and
free from dust, grease and other loose material. Contact our Centre of
