the Charlen Café. She is from San Diego,
California and purchased the business
several months ago. Adriana has left a
positive impression on those she’s met and
has made drastic changes in the restaurant
which makes it feel like a brand new place!
Her hobby, rescuing animals. Her dream,
make her restaurant a chain, create jobs and
become involved in the community.

Hot fun in the summer time! Hundreds enjoyed the summer pool parties that
were sponsored by the City of Phoenix Recreation Department, Phoenix
Revitalization Corporation and supported by donations from Wal-Mart. It was a
great way to cool down from the blazing heat this year.

The city of Phoenix Aviation Department’s Voluntary
Acquisition and Relocation Services (VARS) program
contractor, Desert Archaeology Inc., has been conducting archaeological investigations at parcels acquired by VARS since 2006, where there was a possibility that significant archaeological resources-prehistoric or historic--would be present. These archaeological investigations are part of Phoenix Sky
Harbor International Airport’s federal obligations for
the preservation of significant archaeological resources as stipulated in a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that was developed between the Federal Aviation Administration, the Arizona State Historic
Preservation Officer and the City of Phoenix. The
VARS area is bounded by 7th Street on the west;
44th Street on the east; Washington Street on the
north; and University Drive on the south.

study of each of the parcels. Desert Archaeology
Inc.’s project historian, Pat Stein, is conducting background research to identify the owners and residents
of each parcel and their personal histories from the
time the property was first purchased and constructed, to the final purchase by the city. The findings will
be presented in two reports: a Technical Report,
which is more detailed, scientific and scholarly; and a
Popular Report, which will contain photographs and
narrative descriptions of people, places and artifacts
significant to the area neighborhoods.

Congratulations to the city of
Phoenix Aviation Department’s VARS Team for winning a Phoenix Excellence
Award. The VARS Program
offers single-family homeowners and non-resident property
owners the opportunity to sell
their properties to the city of
Phoenix and owner occupants
and tenants have the opportunity to be relocated outside
any noise contours.
The Phoenix Excellence Award was presented in
May to the entire VARS Team for their work in 2011
in transitioning from a program management company to City staff positions. The change resulted in approximately $1.8 million in annual salary savings. Of
the new positions, nine were initially filled by reductions in force. The VARS Team also took significant
steps to reduce other contractual costs by bringing
previously subcontracted tasks in-house. This further
reduced expenditures by approximately $900,000.
By implementing strategic contractual reductions
and reallocating work to City employees, the VARS
Team was able to continue to provide seamless customer service at a significant savings to the City.

Mary Rose Wilcox wins National Award
from Mexican Government
Longtime Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox has been awarded a
prestigious international award from the Foreign Relations Secretariat of Mexico.
The Premio Ohtli was awarded by the Instituto de los Mexicanos en la Exterior, an
agency that fosters good will and strong ties between Mexico and the Mexican
communities in the United States and other nations around the world. Congratulations Supervisor Wilcox for this great honor!

Local Resident Receives
New Air Conditioner

Nuevo Aire Acondicionador
A great day it was for Phoenix Revitalization (PRC)
to be part of a collaboration with the Police Law Enforcement Association (PLEA) and BEMA Investments to provide a community resident with a new
air conditioning unit. The Gutierrez Family spent
about a month without air conditioning, enduring the
hot summer months. When Eloisa Johnson, Program
Manager for the Fix-It Program at PRC heard of this,
she contacted PLEA to discuss how this family could
be helped. After collaborating, they were able to create a plan to help the Gutierrez Family. This family
has given so much to the community and now it is
their time to receive. On July 2nd, with help from Interstate Air Incorporated of Gilbert Arizona, a new air
conditioning unit was installed. This goes to show
that collaborating agencies are able to make a difference in our communities. Even through economic
hardship, people are still willing to provide their
neighbors with a helping hand.
Un gran día fue para Phoenix Revitalization Corporation (PRC) para formar parte de una colaboración

songs, flannel board stories, and more. Learn tips to build a foundation for reading
including using interactive reading activities. Supported by Valley of the Sun United
Way through a grant from First Things First.
Preschool Storytime – Weekly (For ages three to five with caregiver)

Designed for children from ages 3 to 5 accompanied by a caregiver. Have fun sharing
reading activities presented in English and, if appropriate for the audience, in Spanish.
