• When someone gives advice, recommendations, suggestions, or demands to
another person, Spanish uses the subjunctive mood.
• A sentence that includes the subjunctive can be thought of as having two separate
halves, which are connected by the word que.
Yo recomiendo que tú hagas ejercicio.
I recommend that you exercise.
• Notice that the first half (Yo recomiendo) includes a verb in the regular present
tense and introduces a suggestion, demand, etc. The second half (tú hagas
ejercicio) includes a verb in the subjunctive and tells what the first person wants
the second person to do.
• Verbs in the subjunctive form may look somewhat familiar to you because they
follow the same conjugation rules as the Ud./Uds. commands. To form verbs in
the subjunctive, follow the rules below:
1) Put the verb in the yo form of the present indicative (regular present tense).
2) Take off the -o.
3) a. For -ar verbs, add the following endings: -e, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en
b. For -er and -ir verbs, add the following endings: -a, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an
• Below are three examples of verbs conjugated in the present subjunctive.

and demands. These impersonal expressions are followed by que and then the
subjunctive. Some common expressions are:
