The Plural of Nouns
There are two (2) basic rules in Spanish for forming the plural of a noun*:
1. If the noun ends in a vowel, the plural is formed by adding -s
el libro
la mano
la alumna
el día
la clase
el viaje
los libros
las manos
las alumnas
los días
las clases
los viajes
2. If the noun ends in a consonant, the plural is formed by adding -es
el señor
el profesor
el hospital
el color
la catedral
los señores
los profesores
los hospitales
los colores
las catedrales
Spelling Changes
· If the noun ends in a -z, change the z to c before adding -es
el lápiz
la actriz
la nariz
los lápices
las actrices
las narices
· If If the noun ends in an -n or -s and has an accent mark on the last
syllable, drop the accent mark after adding –es
el violín
la estación
la lección
el francés
los violines
las estaciones
las lecciones
los franceses
· If the noun ends in an -en and is stressed on the next-to-last syllable,
add an accent mark on that syllable after adding –es
el examen
el joven
los exámenes
los jóvenes
