A date of memorable battles
WBA press. March 6. On this day, thus in four different years, four World Boxing Association
title fights that were real battles.
The first was in 1976 when Colombian Antonio Cervantes, better known as “El Kid Pambelé”
was the champion of the Super Lightweight division.
The champion travelled to San Juan, to fight the young Wilfredo Benitez.
Pambelé, at the age of 31, was defending his title for eleventh time. He trusted his powe of his
fists, he also had the support of the fans and and was the favorite 4-1 for the March 6 fight.
However, the Colombian met Benítez who had speed, a strong defense and had a very
dangerous left hand that led him to conquer the ring. At the time, Benitez was unfefeated in 25
fights.
Pambelé boast of his experience, hitting his opponent to warn out him out. He focused on the
face and hurt Benitez’ tleft eye. The champion followed the challenger to punish, press and to
get out.
Those were 15 rounds of pure fight; however, the Puerto Rican won by split decision and
became the younguest boxer in history. The score card favored Benítez 148-144, 147-142,
145-147.
That was Benitez’ moment, he held the 140 lbs golden -black belt for two years.
Khaosai Galaxy retains championship belt in 1985
He had been the lightweight champion for one year already and a day like today, 28 years ago;
the Thai Khaosai Galaxy deended it from the Korean Dong Chun Lee.
Galaxy was a solid champion, who demonstrated his power to finish the fights before the limit;
and again in this fight, he fulfilled his promise to end it before the seventh round and knocked
Lee out.
Esparragoza win the crown in 1987

The Venezuelan Antonio Esparragoza travelled to Texas to look for the Featherweight title of
the WBA.
In Fort Worth, he faced the champion Steve Cruz and knocked him out in the last round.
He got the count and seconds later, the Venezuelan punished him again so hard that the
refereee had to stop the fight.
Esparragoza took advantage of the moment, and defended the belt seven times in four years.
Reid wins the super welterweight title
The American David Reid, with only ten fights, faced the super weilterweight hampion Laurent
Bouduani in Atlantic City, en 1999.
The fight was a 12-round give and take where Reid came out as the new cchampion by the
scorecards of the judges, becoming the youngest boxer to become world champion.
Reid only had ten professional fights when he defeated Boudouani.
Una fecha de batallas memorables
Tal día como hoy se realizaron, en diferentes años, cuatro peleas titulares de la Asociación
Mundial de Boxeo que resultaron verdaderas batallas en el ring.
La primera de ellas fue en 1976, cuando el colombiano Antonio Cervantes, mejor conocido
como “El Kid Pambelé” reinaba en la categoría de los súper ligeros de la AMB. El monarca
viajó a San Juan, para medirse ante un jovenzuelo de 17 años y medio, natural de Puerto Rico
llamado Wilfred Benítez.
Pambelé, a sus 31 años, iba a su onceava defensa del cinturón mundial. Confiado con la fuerza
de su pegada, contaba además con el respaldo de los aficionados y de los conocedores del
boxeo por lo que era el súper favorito para llevarse el triunfo esa noche del 6 de marzo.
Sin embargo, el colombiano se encontró con un desconocido Benítez que mostraba velocidad,
una defensa firme, y además una izquierda peligrosa que de paso se adueñó del centro del
ring. En ese momento, Benítez tenía 25 triunfos en igual cantidad de peleas.
Pambelé hacía alarde de experiencia, colocando golpes para conseguir desgastar a su rival, se
concentró en su rostro y temprano lastimó el ojo izquierdo de Benítez. El campeón buscaba al
retador, castigaba y presionaba para remontar.
Fueron 15 rounds de pelea, después de los cuales el boricua se llevó el triunfo por decisión
dividida para convertirse en el campeón más joven de la historia, hasta ese momento.

Era el momento para Benítez quien durante dos años brilló con el cinturón negro y oro de las
140 libras.
En 1985 Khaosai Galaxy retiene faja mundial
Tenía un año de haberse coronado en el peso súper mosca, y hoy, hace 28 años, el tailandés
Khaosai Galaxy defendía efectivamente ante el coreano Dong Chun Lee.
Galaxy era ya un sólido monarca, que demostraba su poder para acabar las peleas antes del
límite y salía de favorito. En el careo ante Lee cumplió con el pronóstico al acabar la refriega en
el séptimo acto al enviar a la lona al retador.
Esparragoza se corona en 1987
El venezolano Antonio Esparragoza tuvo que viajar a Texas para ir a buscar el título mundial de
la categoría pluma, de la AMB.
En el ring de Fort Worth, se midió al dueño del patio y campeón Steve Cruz a quien liquidó en
el último asalto del combate, gracias a una izquierda que envió a Cruz al suelo.
Recibió el conteo y segundos después volvía a verse castigado por el cumanés, quien no
dejaba de tirarle golpes hasta que intervino el árbitro para detener el pleito.
Esparragoza aprovechó su momento, y reinó durante cuatro años durante los cuales realizó
siete defensas.
Reid conquista faja súper welter
El estadounidense David Reid, en su décima pelea, se midió al campeón súper welter Laurent
Boudouani en Atlantic City, en 1999.
La pelea fue un intercambio que duró doce asaltos, y que finalmente se decidió por puntos que
favorecieron de forma unánime a Reid quien se convertía en uno de los boxeadores en ser
campeón tan temprano en su carrera.
Reid sólo tenía diez peleas en el profesional cuando derrotó a Boudouani.
