Hello Families, Next week will be a big week because it will mark the end of our community PBL (Project Based Learning) unit. As we have been discussing how Telluride compares to other communities, the students decided that Telluride is lacking a Pet Store. Therefore, in culmination of the unit, you are invited to join us next Friday from 9:00-‐9:30, as students transform the classroom into a Pet Store for the day. I would love some help with donations for the day. The class will primarily use stuffed animals as the pets, but any small caged pet would really add some authenticity to the project. In addition, we would love to borrow items such as pet toys, pet food, pet supplies, empty fish tanks, etc.—really anything that would be sold in a pet store. Just make sure to put your name on it so that I can help students remember what belongs to them. Please let me know if you have something that you would be willing to contribute for the morning of Friday, the 15th. During the next two weeks, we will turn the attention from our community towards the bigger picture and will continue looking at and making maps. As we learn about our place in the world and explore the world’s diversity, we will begin reading Letters From Felix. It is a book about a little girl’s stuffed bunny that is lost at the airport and consequently travels the world. The bunny writes letters to the child from several different countries and shares a bit about each country’s traditions and culture. I thought it would be a great opportunity to have some family members come in to share a bit about their heritage. If you are interested in coming in over the next two weeks, or between Thanksgiving and Winter break to discuss your nationality, family heritage, culture, or traditions please let me know and we can schedule a time. This will feed well into our culminating activity the Wednesday before Thanksgiving break when we have a “Feast From Around The World.” I will send out more information about that soon, but basically, you are all invited to come in, as we will share dishes with all kindergarten families. Our classroom’s contribution will be main courses that are authentic to each family’s heritage. Also next week, we will begin our study of Pilgrims, Native Americans, and the first Thanksgiving. We will take a “virtual field trip” to the site of the Plimoth Plantation and learn about life aboard the Mayflower. The following week, students will take a look at the life of the Wampanoag, who were the first Native Americans encountered by the Pilgrims. Finally, conferences are next Wednesday and there will be no school, but your child is welcomed and encouraged to attend conferences at TES. Please keep an eye out for a reminder in your Friday Folders. On that note, report cards are coming home today in Friday Folders today too. Whew, that’s a lot! Please contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or input for the upcoming events.
