WHAT IS THE MASS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?
Good afternoon everybody and welcome to the Mass of the Holy Spirit, a tradition that dates back
to the 16th century and the founding of the first Jesuit schools.
As this Mass officially opens our academic year, we call upon the guidance of the Holy Spirit and
we gather as a university community to pray for the gifts of the Spirit, particularly the gift of
wisdom as we invest ourselves in study, research and service to the world.
Mindful of our Jesuit roots, we remember our mission as a Jesuit Catholic university today:
The Mission of Saint Louis University “is the pursuit of truth for the greater glory of God and for
the service of humanity. As a Catholic, Jesuit University, this pursuit is motivated by the inspiration
and values of the Judeo-Christian tradition and is guided by the spiritual and intellectual ideals of
the Society of Jesus.”
Our celebrants today are Fr. James O´Leary, Chaplain of the Madrid Campus, and Fr. Alberto de
Mingo, Professor of theology at our university. Now please stand as we begin our liturgy.
THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
Primera Lectura: Rom 8, 28-30
First Reading: Rom 8:28-30
Brothers and sisters: We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called
according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image
of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified
he also glorified.
The Word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm: With delight I rejoice in the Lord.
R. With delight I rejoice in the Lord.
Though I trusted in your mercy,
let my heart rejoice in your salvation.
R. With delight I rejoice in the Lord.
Let me sing of the LORD, “He has been good to me.”
R. With delight I rejoice in the Lord.
Gospel: Mt 1:18-23
A reading from the Gospel according to St. Mathew
ALL: Glory to you, oh Lord
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her
husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce
her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through
the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name
him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall be
with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.”
The Gospel of the Lord.
All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Evangelio: Mt 1, 18-23
quiere decir Dios-con-nosotros.
Palabra del Señor.
Todos: Gloria a ti, Señor Jesús.
